Hey.... is anyone using the frozen fruit in bags for smoothies from costco?
WOW! i just was there and saw a 6 pound bag of mango, pinapple, papaya and strawberries for about $8.
that seems like a good buy.
is there any problem with using the frozen fruit from costco in your green smoothies? looks like a real simple time saver.

I use them because it's so cheap, I buy the frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries and the smoothie mix, which I think has had some kind of treatment, can't remember.
I would much rather buy fresh but at this moment it's just more convenient and affordable.

I haven't gotten them (didn't see them) but I do buy frozen fruit from Aldi's. Meijer's (a midwest chain) has their organic frozen fruit on sale this week too.

yeah! that smoothie mix looks fabulous and it would make life SO much easier. the fruit is raw so i wonder what kind of treatment its had.
when i looked on the back of the bag all it listed was its fruit and nothing more. maybe it was given a steam bath or something.
who knows.
i will give it a try sometime when i get sick of chopping fresh fruit. LOL

The smoothie mix at my costco (melon, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, peaches) has citric acid and natural flavorings added.
I don't buy the smoothie mix, but I do buy wild blueberries (go anti-oxidants!) and strawberries. These haven't had any treatment.

I buy organic frozen blueberries from costco. I also get my organic carrots, baby spinach and salad greens from there as well.

wow did it say that on the bag? thats not the same smoothie mix as my store. all it said on the bag at my costco was papaya, strawberries, mango and pinapple.
it didnt mention citric acid on any other 'flavorings'
i think its just fruit.
thats why i got excited.
do you think it could be in there and they dont say?

I think we just have different smoothie mixes. If it contains citric acid and natural flavorings it would have to be listed. The smoothie mix at my Costco is Dole brand.

I use frozen fruit because it's just more affordable. A big bag of wild blueberries is much cheaper than a small container of farmed ones.
I think that they might be pasteurized, though. I'm not sure. Anyone have any info on that?
I also eat raw nuts that aren't really raw, so it's not something I'm going to stress about. It's just nice to know.

The frozen fruit mix we have at our local Costco is "Wawona" brand. Their website says that the fruit is individually quick-frozen and without preservatives.
I use the frozen blueberries often - sometimes Costco has the wild variety and sometimes the farmed organic kind. The wild is much more flavorfull.
The organic carrots are a great deal.
I was just there yesterday and noticed that they have dates back in stock, yay!

YES! i noticed the dates..they were so cheap i bought one and they are lucious. very soft and sweet. we are both near the date growing areas so maybe thats why they are so good.
and you are right about the carrots.... i nearly fell over when i saw the price for 10 lbs of carrots... ORGANIC no less !
next time i am in costco i will have to see what brand that is they carry and do the same thing....check the website.
i wonder how long they will carry the fresh dates.

Hello fellow desert dweller,
Yeah, I wonder how long they will carry the dates.
Next time I go there, I'll ask the produce manager.
It would be great to get a heads-up of what good foods are in stock at stores like costco.
I'm going to start keeping track of this in my calendar.

today i talked to the date people that supply the dates to my costco. i asked them how long they would be suppling them and they said april.
does your costco keep the dates in the cold strorage section with the lettuces and stuff? mine does and it makes a big difference.
the date people told me SO many dont keep them in the cold storage and they should be COLD! they last forever that way.
he told me NOW is the time to be buying dates and putting them in the freezer because they are so plump and ripe and soft.... they are a fresh fruit.
he said... take them out of the container and put into a zip lock bag for the freezer. thats way you can store more easily.
so.... when i get a chance maybe thursday... i am going to go get another container 2 and do just that. they are just SO good this time of year when the season starts.

Wow, thanks so much!
After reading your post, I went out and bought more dates to freeze.
Yes, our costco puts dates in the cold storage area. The quality of the dates in cold storage is exceptional. A year ago - when they first stocked dates, they put them out with the onions and potatoes and the dates were dry and slightly leathery.
Thanks again for talking to the date people!

I don't get the smoothie mix, because it has more than just the fruit if I remember reading the ingredients correctly. But I do get the strawberries, and they have frozen organic blueberries and mixes berries. So I get those three typically. I don't buy everything organic yet, but I do what I can. I do try to avoid things that have something other than the fruit listed in the ingredients however. HTH!:D

I'm not sure if frozen fruit is raw; I think it's flash frozen. Anyway, I do use it in smoothies. It's so convenient and less expensive.

thats really ashame they dont keep them in the cooler and the date guy i spoke with was saying that its really a raw fruit and needs to be in the cooler.
if you dont then they just get dried out. you can try telling them but chances are they wont listen.
good luck.

i just looked at the package and they are not organic. they are quite nice and very soft and lovely. i hope your costco will think about putting yours in the cooler section. its makes a difference. all you can do is ask and see.

I haven't seen any Organic dates. I went to the local health food store that sells only organic produce and the dates they had weren't organic either which made me wonder if there are any organic dates. I bought the big thing from Costco too.
