Hey Y'all,

I was wondering, I want to do a week long juice feast but I don't have a juicer, Vita-mix or a good blender so I was going to use the Bolthouse juices (green goodness, blue goodnes, etc.) What do you all think? I would prefer to have freshly juiced fruit 'n veggies but I can't afford to buy any new appliances right now and I really want to do this. What are your thoughts?

Hello there!

Well Bolthouse is of course pasteurised... and here's my experience: at times where i'd be 100% without any questionable foods (nuts & such) i would feel TERRIBLE after drinking Bolthouse but fine after a smoothie i'd make myself!

I tried to do a smoothie day with Bolthouse too and i just get bloated and what not.. so basically- it's not raw and makes me feel bad. So- i would not do it - just my experience!!:D

Try checking out www.Overstock.com and sites like that for affordable juicers. You can also find pretty easily online a 20% for www.BedBathandBeyond.com and/or their retail stores. If you do buy online, check out www.RetailMeNot.com beforehand as you may be able to find a savings code comping the shipping, etc.

As for Bolthouse - I personally like it, especially the Blue Goddess. It's a quick way to try to stay on the right track when you are out and about. I was particularly saddened to see my local Whole Foods stopped carrying most of the line and instead replaced it with Minute Maid. Not sure what's up with that and I've not tried the line.

My thought is, how many bottles of juice (or however they come) are you going to drink during the week? Personally, I'd save all that money, take it, add a bit more to it ~ and purchase a juicer. THEN, I'd go and purchase some good, organic fruit and leafy greens and do the juice feast ~ or not.

hello there,

I would do your best to get a juicer. I found my first one at a garge sale for $5 dollars, then my next one brand new Hamilton Beach for $20 dollars. I am blessed and now I have a greenstar. I would suggest untill then do green smoothies. If you do not have a blender you can get one cheap. So good luck to you!!!!

Check the thrift stores as well. You can sometimes scrounge up some good appliances. Also. start asking people you know if they have one sitting dusty in the basement or cupboard that they don't use. You'd be surprised how many people do. Also, I would list a wanted on Craigslist or on a freecycle group.

A blender is a way better & less expensive option than the Bolthouse Juices. Either you can do a smoothie feast or juice using a strainer bag.

Before I found raw, I did a long juice fast with bottled Bolthouse juices.

Then several months after being raw, I did a juice fast with fresh, raw juices.

The differences in my energy levels and how I felt were incompariable! I had SOO much energy and felt so cleansed on the raw juices! NOT so with the bottled juice; I felt drained a lot of the time with the bottled juice.

LIVING JUICE - is where it's at!

Thanks for all of your reponses and input. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet, I'm really counting my pennies and spending money with a very critical eye at the moment so anything additional outside of my preset budget I'm apprehensive about. I like being raw but I'm not willing to go in debt or be broke for it.

I did ask my brother if he still had the juicer that he purchased a lllooooong time ago and if he wanted to sell it to me, but knowing him, he'll just hand it over for free. So, I guess we'll see. I'll let you know.

Thanks again!

I don't recommend the Bolthouse "juices". Many are not even juices, but contain fruit purees. And of course, they are all pasteurized.

This may sound naive, but what is wrong w/ fruit purees....isn't it just blended fruit?

Not juice and not raw.

If you can't afford to buy a juicer right now (and your brother doesn't have one any longer), I think you are better off eating "raw light" as in simple fruits and greens most days interspersed with 1-day long water fasts (maybe once a week or once a month). You will still detox with the food (more slowly) and give your body an occasional rest. Using pasteurized juices adds to the inflammation load instead of detoxing. JMHO:p

Nothing is wrong with fruit purees (aka blended fruit) but drinking fruit purees is not juice fasting.

I agree with what Emma T and Revvell said. You would be better off saving your money and getting a blender or a juicer when you can. As I recall Bolthouse is not exactly cheap. ($3-4?) I would think that it would be pretty expensive to buy a lot of juice that way, so you could save enough in a week to buy an inexpensive blender or juicer. Try thrift stores and garage sales, they come up often. You are better off using a cheap juicer than buying pasturized juice.

But that money is still eating up their produce cost. Not really helping them $50 juice is not the same as a $50 juicer but still having to buy fruit and veggies to make the juice.

Personally, I like Bolthouse. Taste more fresh than regular juice that claims to be natural or 100% pure juice. Better tasting than Naked.

Hard call. If this juicing is your entry and transition to going raw, I guess it is okay. That is what I did. Eventually you will have to save to buy at least a good blender. A juicer is really not needed.

Make habit of putting $10 at least a month for a good juicer until you can afford the one you want.

That's true, because I have an old blender I don't use, good shape but it is useless to me since I have my beloved VitaMix.

Right, I agree it isn't juice...I was just at little confused w/ Juliebove's post that fruit purees aren't raw.

But that money is still eating up their produce cost. Not really helping them $50 juice is not the same as a $50 juicer but still having to buy fruit and veggies to make the juice.

And that was my original thought and point. To buy a juicer now means that I still have to buy my food and or produce for the week, but the Bolthouse juices would just replace what I alread have budgeted for groceries, no additional money needed.

I'm still waiting for my brother to get back with me - but you know how you ask someone about something that you know they haven't thought about in quite a while but all of a sudden when you ask then it becomes top priority for them...yeah, I'm getting that feeling.

So there is a very nice thrift store, actually a couple that I can check out and see if they have a juicer or high-end blender (I say 'high-end' b/c these thrift stores are in high-end areas). It's where I got my first Nesco dehy from. Will keep you posted.

Thanks EVERYONE for giving me your words of wisdom!!! :D

I know at times it can seem like healthy choices are more expensive than the alternative: the usual American crap diet. But the opposite is so true. I have been about 80 - 90% raw for the best part of the past 25 years - initially to save my life - and have found that I spend a lot less than my friends, clients and patients on food. And I'm a lot healthier than any of them! And a lot older as well! Plus I don't buy all of the expensive superfoods, or have special equipment other than a Vita-Mix which I've had for most of that 25 years. And I use it almost everyday! $450 investment for 25 years - and still gong strong. I'd say forget the juicer - you are just throwing away a lot of great food (essential fiber!!) and get at least a great blender and start using all of what you buy - nothing in the garbage bin! Well very little anyway! That's my 25 cents worth! LOL

Thanks for all of your responses and input.
