View Full Version : I want to go raw
Peter Parker

I want to go raw. Im tired of reading books, researching. Its time to do.
I have went raw before various times and always "drop the diet" perhaps I see it as a diet OR I get so hungry and get sick feelings that I must "EAT NOW!"
As soon as I have some cooked food I am able to think again. I am not dizzy and able to perform as needed at work.
:)
Whats your experiences? Your ideas on this? Input please!

The past times you tried eating 100% raw, what did you eat? Did you eat enough? How about greens? I think, when first eating raw, there is a time period, (usually 30 days, but sometimes longer) that once you have succeeded for being 100% raw, your cravings for cooked food tend to detiorate.
If nothing else, try transitioning. There have been many good suggestions before about transitioning. Some people eat raw for breakfast and lunch, then eat a cooked dinner for 1 or 2 weeks. Then they will incorporate maybe 3 raw dinners in the next couple of weeks. Slowly increasing the raw dinners each week, can make it simpler for some people.
Hope this helps.

I didnt eat enough, I was always hungry. At work I have to be "on my toes" constantly thinking. I cant be sluggish, I felt that way when I was raw. I would eat something cooked full of carbs like a bean burrito and be back in "gear"
I had lots of Naked Green Juice, fruits and spinach salads.
This time I want to base it off of vegetables and stay there.
All responses are always helpful. I enjoy the input.

Yes , you say you eventually tell yourself "you must eat now " ,why not EAT raw food when you feel like this?
Mabe you were experiencing bad detox? If you feel like transitioning would help , then try wholesome cooked foods, no dairy ,meat ,eggs , or fried stuff -try rice, steamed veggies, along with the raw foods if that helps !
Also , did you eat a lot of dehydrated raw food ?

Im not really a fan of dehydrated foods, so I skipped them.
I do vegan already, no animal products as much as possible. For example parts of my car was probably made from some animal parts some how. or the books I read were made from horse parts or whatever. Food I consume is always vegan.
I guess the reason I dont grab raw foods is maybe Ive waited too late to eat or I dont feel like they are giving me the energy to do what I need. Perhaps this is crap I just tell myself.
Usually when I get light headed its time for food I want carbs for energy and I want them now, or so I trick myself to believe this is what my body tells me. Hey this is my main source of energy why are you cutting it down? I want beans. I want rice! So I give in and become depressed and talk about how tomorrow will be different.

Why not just eat all the time at first & don't let yourself get so hungry? I'm kinda the same way where if I wait & get hungry I will want anything quick & not healthy!

hello, I am just starting to eat raw, so I am no expert. The hardest part of the day for me is after 2.00p.m. I have been eating almonds for lunch or in the afternoon. The first two days were pretty hard, so I rang up a friend of mine who is on the raw-vegan diet and he suggested to eat more vegetables as I was eating alot of fruit. So I have at least three vegetables juices a day. You really have to decide to go raw 100% and to remember that your body will start to detox right away. Maybe you should start on the days you don't work, then If you don't feel too good, you can rest or eat.

hi peter, I hope you enjoy your work and find time to relax and live.Maybe you could go on a holiday and go raw. Then again maybe you can't. if you can work a 60 hour week, you must have abit of back-bone. Courage, start raw and take it one day at a time, although I don't envy you.
Peter, extra virgin cold pressed olive oil is raw.

Actually, Doe, extra virgin cold pressed olive oil is not necessarily raw. I've copied Rhio's explanation of this several times, so, this time, I'll just post the link to it below. Raw olive oil is raw, none others are, end of story.
Spidey -- I strongly suggest you buy Alissa's book and do the 30 Day Challenge following her guidelines. She explains exactly how to go 100% raw cold turkey and succeed at it. She explain why you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight. You will then so easily understand how and why raw works in your body -- it will answer all your questions, including why it didn't work for you before. If there are no local outlets for the book, you can order it from this website (upper left hand corner of this page) and, I think (but don't quote me) that you can call her number and order it over the phone. That way you'll get it right away.
I can understand your desire to keep your meals simple. The salad dressing you mentioned (raw apple cider vinegar and raw olive oil) is great. I add a few seasoning like ginger or garlic or basil/oregano, etc. to get different flavors when I get tired of just plain vinaigrette (sp?).
Read Post #33 in the link below for info on cold pressed oil. By the way, you can order raw oil on this site also!

YES, if you space your meals out to 6-8 small meals a day it will feel like you are eating all the time. Just starting out eating raw EAT EAT EAT and I promise you, you WILL loose weight.
The idea of so many small meals is to keep your metabolism revved high and your blood sugars stabilized.

Peter, I second RawTruths suggestion of getting Alissa's book . I couldnt imagine doing this in a stumbling in the dark kind of way. Her book lays it all out for you and is all about what to eat!
What you are feeling is temporary, detox symptoms. They will not last. Make it through them, however you can! Truly. On the other side you will be so glad you did.
I feel like that also starting out, with mucous headaches thrown in, ugh. But a week or 2 later, I am hit with energy and clarity and an incredible sense of well being.
Make it through those feelings anyway you can! Drink tons of water, have tons of raw food around you at all times and eat all the raw food you want.
It is sometimes a great help to read others journals to get ideas of what people eat. And here is a helpful thread on simple things to eat.
http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3240&highlight=simple
Also, check out the journals of Allison, RawPriestess and Yanni
as well as the website www.rawreform.com for inspiration from people who have lost lots of weight on a rawfood lifestyle.
You can do this! It is so worth it. Keep talking to us!

Hey peter,
I can't say I am 100% raw but I have definately changed my diet drastically.
Usually in the morning I have a green smoothie. Which consists of some green leafy vegetable like kale, dandelion or collards (about 2 pieces), then throw in some frozen bananas along with a regular banana, add a bit of water then blend and drink. For your lunch you can have salads. As for the dressing, you can use lemon juice or even the juice of an orange with a tad of oil. I use either flax, sesame or olive. Lately I made a concoction of lime and ginger juice and bottled it up. I have used it for dressing, hair rinse and even a nice warm drink after dinner.

tomorrow will be mostly carrots and lots of salads.
That doesn't sound very tasty, or very filling, or very energizing. Maybe you need more food. Can you do bananas? When you feel a need for energy, you could have a couple of bananas (it might mean taking as many as a dozen bananas to work but you need to eat if this is going to work for you!) I rarely go out without two or three bananas and a handful of raw sunflower seeds in case I get hungry.
I don't dehydrate (I know I don't drink enough as it is, and sucking whatever liquid there is from my food seems counter-productive) and I find lots of things to eat. Green smoothies (fruit and greens; they can be apple-based if you're concerned about the sugar content) are a tasty, filling way to add greens to your diet. Blended soups, there's a recipe for chili that's great and filling without dehydrating in the recipe section, roll things in lettuce leaves, add sunflowers seeds to things. I'm eating plenty, not having blood sugar fluctuations, and I'm still losing a little weight (I'm on my way to losing that last five pounds that I've never budged before in my life). You don't need to starve yourself on greens and carrots to lose weight eating this way, but, to make it work, you do need to eat enough, and you need to eat what will keep you going.
Edit to add:
Here's the chili recipe, it says to dehydrate but I never do and it's still wonderful.

I would rather suffer a little now and know what to expect than suffer being fat and tired all the time and end up with heart disease (and not telling waht else) and always on meds and in pain suffering.
So I went to the local grocery store and purchased lots of veggies.
I also picked up 1 package of strawberries, Kale, Spinach, Carrots, bananas, cilantro, avacados, bell peppers, and more!

Here we go.
Day 1 is here.
I am strong. I will overcome my cooked food "addiction". I am confident in my abilities.
here's some lyrics from a song Im listening to this morning, for added strength.
--The song is titled "Shine" by the Rollins Band.
if I'd listened everything that they said to me, I wouldn't be here!
and if I took the time to bleed from all the tiny little arrows shot my way,
I wouldn't be here!
the ones who don't do anything are always the ones who try to put you down
and you could spend your entire life walking around
in the nowhere land of self doubt
cause when you start to doubt yourself the real world will eat you alive!
it's time, it's time to align your body with your mind, it's hero time
it's time, it's time to align your body with your mind, it's hero time
cause when you start to doubt yourself the real world will eat you alive!
and you know it's true!
I'm talking to you: hero time starts right now! Yeah, hero time, yeah,
time to shine, hey, hero time!
if ya think you've got 100 years to mess around: you're wrong!
this time it's real, your time is now . . . it's hero time!
Yeah, hero time, hey, time to shine, yeah, hero time, yeah!
hard times are gettin' harder, the liars are acting strong
you better get a grip on yourself or you won't be around too long
it's hero time, hey, time to shine, yeah, hero time, yeah, hero time, yeah!
it's hero time, it's hero time, time to shine, shine, shine, shine, shine!
oh yeah!
no such thing as spare time, no such thing as free time
no such thing as down time
all you got is life time... go! cause it's hero time, cause it's time to
shine
'coz it's time to go, go, go! yeah!
when you're gone, you're so gone (2x) you've got it now, it's time to go
hero time starts right now! yeah, aha..! ...change it!
I got grace in times of friction, I got truth in times of fiction
I've got no time for the hype... suicide!? I'm not that type...
I got no time for drug addiction, no time for smoke and booze
too strong for a shortened life span, I've got no time to lose!
It's time to shine, yeah, it's hero time, yeah, it's hero time, yeah,
yeah!
when you start to doubt yourself the real world will eat you alive! yeah!
you could spend your entire walking around like a coward or you can get up!
get up, get up, get up, get up! it's time to shine! yeah!!!

When I first went raw, I ate all the time. I did so for months! I lost 40 pounds. Only recently have I noticed that I choose to eat smaller meals. I have been raw for 9 to 10 months now. The first month for me was transition.
I still have more to lose, and feel very comfortable eating what I want, when I want, and how much or how little food. At first, I made a lot of recipes, but now a days I tend to eat more simply.
So for now, to get over cravings, I would suggest you just eat what you want as long as it is raw.

Go Peter Go! Keep us posted. Complain, rant, tell us how yucky you feel, do whatever. The people here are the greatest. I am two weeks raw and getting better from the detox each day.
At work I take fruit (pears, apples, oranges, bannanas), raisins, grapes, a good trail mix. You could also take figs and dates which are very nutritous fruits. Yesterday I made Alissa's date nut torte. All my fellow employees chowed the whole thing down. It took about 10 minutes in the morning to make just before I left. Everyone was asking me questions about living food. Not sure I converted anyone, but they all want me to make the blueberry pie next :D . You could make the date nut torte and eat that all day too. The Pesto Pasta is good too. Watch the cilantro if you don't want it too spicey. I would think this would keep for several hours without refridgeration.

I found an olive oil that is "cold pressed" by Mantova. We have a store here in Toledo that carries several gourmet type things. They have several brands of imported olive oils. Most of them say "first cold pressed" that statement concerned me. So I went for the one that stated "cold pressed".Tim -- if this is old news to you, please forgive me, but from the gist of your post, it seems like you might be interested in a primer on olive oils. So, here 'tis again!
When I was first investigating "cold-pressed", I was surprised and dismayed to learn what it really means. Here is what Rhio says in Hooked on Raw:
- - -
What Should Cold-Pressed Really Mean?
When you go to the health food store and look in the oils section, you may see a lot of oils labeled as cold-pressed. But most, if not all, of those oils are not really cold-pressed. Cold-pressed should mean that the oil was extracted in such a way that it was not subjected to heat, and additionally, that heat was not generated in the process of the oil being extracted. If a little heat is generated, it should be below the temperature at which the value of the oil is destraoyed. Genuinely cold pressed oils have all their nutritional value intact, including enzymes, omega 3's and 6's, and other known and unknown factors. These oils must be refrigerated to preserve their freshness.
In Practice, What Does Cold-Pressed Mean?
Most cold-pressed oils have been heat treated. Seeds that are going to be mechanically pressed are usually cooked first to increase their yield. This means they are heated to 248 degrees F for up to two hours. This process cracks the seed, exposing the oils to air and light, which cause oxidation. The oil is then extracted by squeezing the cooked seeds with screw presses, which generate heat again (approximately 185 degrees to 203 degrees F). These oils are sold as unrefined, but, as you can see, they have gone through at least two heat processes, which destroyed their nutritional value. Such heated oils are detrimental to your health because most of their fatty acids have been converted from the natural cis fatty acid form (present in unheated oil) to trans fatty acids, which are toxic and have been implicated as a causative factor in heart disease and cancer.
- - -
If you don't have Rhio's book, I very strongly recommend it. She is truly an original and has researched all of the facts in it herself. She does not accept "common wisdom" in the raw world ... and does not simply repeat what she's heard or read. I consider her the very best resource. For those newbies who don't know, she's studied at the well-established raw health centers and created the raw food hotline in New York years ago. She is a persistent researcher, which I love, because I don't have to be, yet I can emulate her and do contact manufacturers myself, knowing from her what questions to ask.
By the way, I now buy my olive oil from Adam's Olives at my local farmers' market, directly from the man who presses the olives. If I wish, I could drive the 2-3 hrs and visit his plant to make sure he's telling me the truth.
**Alissa sells raw olive oil on this site.**

Thank you!!!! Any foods that I need to improve on? I want to give my body more of what it needs. I feel greens, no nuts, not much fruit.
Any concerns about this, please?
I know I shouldnt care too much about what I eat now just as long as its raw. I feel that habits are hard to break and would prefer not to create any "new ones that are bad."

Gracious, yes. I have concerns with that Peter, truly.
You are just beginning raw and if your going to be that Spartan right from the get go, I am concerned it will not be doable for any length of time.
What do you think are wrong with fruits? Why not much fruit?
Nuts and seeds have their place also, though of course in moderation, but still they have their place.
Now, please tell me why you are thinking
only greens, no nuts and not much fruit??

<<if your going to be that Spartan right from the get go, I am concerned it will not be doable for any length of time.>>
This would be my concern, too, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. People are having great results in their health and weight without being that limiting. Are you hoping to lose weight faster by limiting fruits and nuts? Or is there a health issue, such as allergies or diabetes, that means you can't have them?

Just wanted to say, don't be afraid to eat fruit. Natural, unprocessed carbs are *good* for you. The best thing to kill a craving is a big smoothie or 2-3 bananas. They give you immediate energy and stop your sweet tooth dead in its tracks.

Hey there -- Day Three! Yahoo!
I'll continue our private email conversation, but I just wanted to jump in here really quickly to agree totally and completely with the others. Don't be afraid of fruit. Fruit is your friend! Repeat it 20 times: fruit is my friend :D
From others' past experiences and from Alissa's advice, being too stringent and strict is setting yourself up to fail. Your body needs fats to get a familiar feeling of satiety (and to function) and it needs plenty of fruits in addition to your greens and veggies.
Give yourself permission to eat a wide variety of raw foods. This is SOO the opposite of traditional, conventional modern ways of eating. In fact, the MORE you eat at the beginning, the more you will lose.
I know it's been said before, but just toss out the calorie/fat/carbs/food pyramid way of thinking. This is radically different ... and a proven way to not just regain your health but to lose weight. Permanently. And, it's just so very easy once you get the hang of it through your first month or so.
To sum it up -- eat fruit, especially in the morning and for snacks. Don't be afraid of nuts and seeds (well, of course, you don't want to be eating handfuls of them throughout the day). And, eat as many greens as you can. Whip up salad dressings (very easy -- just 3 ingredients which you can pour into an empty glass jar and shake) and dips (do you have a blender?) so you can easily eat veggies other than salads. Oh, did I mention water? Ooh, so essential -- drink lots of pure water, also.

:D
I have a blender, champion juicer and excalibur dehydrator, little sprouting jars, and so forth and so on.
I drink around a gallon a day, I drink and drink throughout the day.
As for fruits I had some bananas and strawberries today. I slipped some today. I ate some mashed potatoes with rolls. I felt like I was weighed down and very sick to my stomach. miserable, in fact. :(
As my parents always said "Fall down 9 times, get up 10"
I consider this a well learned lesson on the way out of the place I was eating I held the door for a elderly couple. The wife was pushing the husband in a wheelchair. I marked it up as a lesson again and moved on to the local food co-op and loaded up on garbanzo beans to sprout for hummus.

I feared keeping weight on with the fruits, nuts and seeds that I only would slow the weight loss down by eating them.
No allergies to nuts and seeds, just feared the slow weight loss.

You dont need to fear them ever, especially not the first few weeks. Check out my journal. I ate almond butter on bananas, date nut torte, blueberry pie with almond crust, halvah etc daily and lost 8 lbs the first week, 6 or so the second etc.
Check out RawPriestess' journal, she lost 40 and eats gourmet food ( shes a raw chef)
Eventually you may need to adjust , if your body tells you to--but right now it is of the utmost importance to make yourself feel comfortable, familiar, satiated, indulged, happy on raw.
Dont skimp to begin with....eat raw to your body and minds content while you adapt this new lifestyle.
When you get Alissa's book, you will see this stressed.
It is wonderful-you can truly eat when you want to. And it has to be comfortable for it to be a lifestyle.
Throw that fear out the window and eat some yummy raw dishes...mm.. :p
and yeah for youon day 3! Keep talkin to us!
Many blessings~

I have a blender, champion juicer and excalibur dehydrator, little sprouting jars, and so forth and so on.You are SO set!!! I had none of those when I went raw. My blender had been broken for a year or so, even. You're definitely prepared.
I drink around a gallon a day, I drink and drink throughout the day. Great. So many people don't do that at all -- they fill up with coffee, sodas, and sports drinks. You're so far ahead of the game.

heheh well this is far from the first time Ive tried it, but didnt have the support that I have here. We have a raw/living food group here but they meet once a month. A lot can happen in once a month. --I havent been in 6 months or so I should go.
Great. So many people don't do that at all -- they fill up with coffee, sodas, and sports drinks. You're so far ahead of the game.
coffee:
yuck. I dislike the smell of coffee breath. Plus I dont like the "jitters"
sodas:
make me feel like I have a coating on my teeth, tounge, and throat which leaves me thirsty for more.
sports drinks:
not a big fan of the sugar. Nothing beats good ol' water. I know this may sound funny but I keep a check on how much water I intake by the color of my urine. if its not clear then I need to down some more water.
Amazing how your body is adapting to live and light food so fast, isn't it?
Its impressive. I worked out in the lawn tonight mowing/weed wacking/ tidying/ trimming bushes/ for around an hour. Dripping sweat, my hair's as wet as if I stepped out of the shower. my shirt is soaked down to my navel. when eating cooked I dont think I had the energy to work that long in the yard. And I cant get enough water in me after the fact. Im going to drink drink drink and when I think Im finished drinking, drink some more.
ooh. I know what snack Im going to reward myself. I froze some watermelon about 2 weeks ago. Im going to put the "flat" cover in the juicer and make me some watermelon "ice cream" mixed with a kiwi or two.

Hmmmm .... post your results on the frozen watermelon. Seems like it might turn out to be a great slushy. Doubt it'll get creamy. Maybe like a sorbet or granita. Yummmm. My watermelon doesn't last long enough to get frozen. :p
