Hello everyone,

are any of you 100% oil&saltfree rawies ?

If yes: don't you sometimes have the feeling you need some salt? I am asking because I had the following problem: staying 100% raw for long periods of times (over 3 years), and then suddenly realising that something is missing.

At the beginning (first 6-7 months)I feel great, but then my energy leaves me and I can't even do much exercising either, which is not nice at all :(

Then I do finally give up and eat some salty vegan spread and get an amazing energy boost.........especially when I can drink some warm herbal tea with it: it feels so right to do that from time to time.....why is it like that?

After doing it for couple of days I restart my "rawness" for the next couple of years, but 1 or 2 years later the same thing happens and I have the feeling I need some salt&oil from time to time.

Can you think of anything I might have been doing wrong?

Has any of you experienced the same thing?

Why do I feel so exhausted most of the time when raw?

I would appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks a lot!

Take care,

Eva:)

Your body needs sodium! You can get it from celery juice, or from other salty vegetables, but the most concentrated raw vegan source of sodium is sea salt. So don't feel bad for slipping up and eating a vegan salty spread. Just make your own raw vegan salty spreads.
Nothing wrong with oil, either, when it is cold-stone pressed, fresh, unrefined and raw. Good quality raw vegan olive oil is nothing more than olive juice.

I was reading something like this somewhere else, too. Seems 80/10/10 people and fruitarians struggle with it and I'm glad to say Alissa book includes recipes with added fat, salt and seaweed.

We have salt in every tissue in our bodies and 90% of our bodies' cells are replaced every two years. It seems logical then that we must get salt somewhere in our diets. If you eat a lot of celery, dark leafy greens and seaweed you may feel comfortable not supplementing with salt. Otherwise, I personally think a small amount of minimally processed sea salt is ok.

I would think that there are lots of things that are in our body but we do not have to take them in our diet as the body can make them from the things that we do take in.

It sounds as if you have been raw for a long time so I an reluctant to suggest anything to you because I assume that you know more than me. You must listen to your body and if you feel that you need salt them it will only do you good.
Have you checked your B12 levels. There may be something else in that salty vegan spread that is calling you.

this is such an important topic....

life for me is MUCH better without salt and oil....i get organic salt from the fresh fruits and vegetables i eat...and plenty of it.....even sea salt....it is still salt...i like to get salt in its organic form...

oil is processed...i would rather get some fat from avocados or seeds now and then...i don't think the problem is that people are lacking fat...look around...it is definitely not the problem...

your intuition of cutting these things out is correct...seems like you may miss the memory...or the experience of these stimulants...they are by no means optimal foods...

thanks for your advice....I'll try the celery. I remember when my Mummy made some celery juice for me it tasted very salty and I told her not to put any salt in it next time :)

this sounds great to me:D

Thank you!

thank you very much for your thoughts!

I have the feeling something went quite wrong.......my situation is more dramatic than I wish it should be: not only was I feeling exhausted most of the time, I can't feel my hands anymore either and, being a violinist it's not exactly the best thing that could happen to you.

Has anyone experienced the same? I feel lost and don't know what to do...

I am raw since 2003.....I'm open to any good ideas&thoughts. Don't hesitate, I don't think it matters how long we do something, the most important thing is the quality of it, not the amount of time....

All my knowledge is being tested right now: I know that "the best salt&oil we can get from the raw food" but my body tells me something different.

I haven't checked my B12 levels, but I don't consider eating any animal products, nor do I think that pills are good for us.....do you think they are?

In some books you read that it's important to refill your B12 levels with pills etc, in others it says that B12 is getting build in our bodies.....which one is right???

Has anyone experienced the same thing and felt better after taking the tablets?

Help!

I am happy it worked out for you!

this doesn't answer my question, but thanks for your input anyway:)

b12 simply can not be manufactured in the body in the quantities neccessary for health. if you were to go for a test you would see where you're levels are at but a b12 deficiency can take years to show up and a deficiency can cause permanent and serious damage.
if you are unsure about the levels of certain nutrients in your diet there are online nutrition tracking sites like fitday.com where you enter in a list of everything you eat each day and get a breakdown of how much of everything you are getting. it sounds like something like this might be helpful for you.
good luck!

Freshlight, I felt like this when I was deficient in B12. I was very reluctant to take supplements for a year into my raw journey and finally after getting myself tested and listening to one of my veteran raw friend's advice I decided to just take it. I was low and I also developed a large cyst on my face, below my ear. This is when I decided to take action. I take a sublingal B12 supplement. I don't like feeling spacy, lacking in mental clarity and low in energy. And since I've been taking the supplement - maybe once or twice a month - I'm fine. The cyst disappeared after I started supplementing. I know it was related to my deficiency after doing some research.

I don't know if this is what it happening with you, but just sharing my experience. Your symptoms sound very much like how I was feeling when I was low in B12.

With regard to oil and salt. I eat a lot of celery and dulse. But I occasionally will put a pinch of celtic sea salt in gourmet raw meals. I tend to like my salads without dressing now, but I do like to add olive oil when I feel I need to add more fat to my diet.

I hope you receive your answers. Keep listening to your body. I had to learn to be more flexible. I was pretty radical with not wanting to take supplements, but B12 is the exception for me now. I don't worry about it anymore.

Eva, I think it's because it's simply what your body is needing and the salty vegan spread gives you energy. I've learned not to analyze everything that is happening so much anymore and to just tune into my body. If I eat something raw that gives me energy, I just continue eating it. If I eat something that seems to deplete my energy or I have trouble digesting it...I ease off or eliminate it from my diet. Wishing you the best and let us know how you're doing.

Aloe Vera (barbadensis miller) contains over 20 minerals, all of which are essential to the human body. The human body requires 22 amino acids for good health -- eight of which are called "essential" because the body cannot fabricate them. Aloe Vera contains all of these eight essential amino acids, and 11 of the 14 "secondary" amino acids. Aloe Vera has Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E. Vitamins cannot be manufactured within the body, and some cannot be stored by the body, so it is necessary for the diet to sustain a continuous supply

I just took this off the web. There are many other referances to aloe vera and B12. Since reading that aloe vera is a source I have been adding it to my morning green juice.
I think that this is fine for me as my levels of B12 are ok but if yours are gone dangerously low then maybe you will need to take a shot for a quick rise but then the aloe can maintain it for you.
You do not need to take any animal products to get B12. You can get vegan sources. I have some by a company called Twinlab which I have used occasionally.

RawHeaven,

thanks for taking the time to help me.

Sounds like I do have some kind of deficiency......I'll go and get tested tomorrow.

are the supplements you take vegan?

I was hoping I can find some kind of a "natural solution" to my problem: doesn't the nature offer us everything we need?

I have to try and find a new concept,so that I can start understanding the raw lifestyle a bit better than I did before. Do you still take B12 every now and then?

This is so interesting. Couple of months ago I was convinced I'm on the right path and now I have to learn a lot more .......it is not easy, but I hope I'll manage.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad you are doing better now :)

Take care,

Eva
