OK i posted this on the being raw section but maybe it should be here.... i have a question i hope someone can answer
I always have trouble making things sprout....even when i get really fresh seeds. i was wondering about some buckwheat that i have soaking at the moment. i want to dehydrate it for cereal.... if it doesnt sprout ... is soaking enough to get the nutrition from it?
does it HAVE to sprout ? or can you still get some good nutrition from soaked buckwheat?
thanks

Buckwheat is an odd fellow. It doesn't "sprout" as we know sprouts with the stem and greens and all. It will get a teeny, tiny white nub, which is it's "sprout". How long have you soaked it? And yes, I think if you rinse, rinse, rinse, then dehydrate, it will be fine.
I generally do get a good-sized tail from my buckwheat. :p But I could stop sprouting earlier. I only soak buckwheat for about 30 minutes and personally would not want to eat it that early -- but it DOES already retain a ton of water and start sprouting that quickly. It can help to soak it in warm (not HOT) water, then just soak it every few hours until that night or the next morning. Then, bam, should be good to go. It tastes more fresh and has a better aftertaste if I soak and rinse for at least 24 hours.

wow thats interesting... thanks for telling me that. i soaked it yesterday as per Alissa's instructions. it was about 6 hours. then i rinsed it 3 times over 6 hours before i went to bed. when i got up this morning i rinsed it again so now its been about 12 hours since i took it out of the soak water.
i think Alissa said its like 2 days before they sprout. but thats good that you told me they only make little white numbs. now i have to make sure to i get a closer look.
i want to make live granola for breakfast. i dont have a dehydrator yet so i am going to put them in the desert sun to dry out.
thanks for your help.
