These two are friends of mine in Canada and the loveliest people ever. Good will come of this though and we hope that the publicity their story is getting will help others in the future who are traveling with unpackaged food. The tests at the border seem to be giving many false positives, and being cleared weeks later after being arrested is no consolation.

I think if anyone plans on traveling with chocolate like this, it would be advisable to have a print out of this story in their carry on bag. It could save them thousands in legal fees!

I was a drug-tester for four years. There are MANY false positives. FYI - hemp seeds give false THC positives, and poppy seeds give false Opiate positives. IBU profien gives false opiate positives as well. The USA's drug board is crazy!!

Too bad that energy isn't targeted to issues that REALLY need attention, um, like the state of the U.S. economy? Hello?

Like Revvell says:

Those poor people and that poor baby!

I'm president of a farms rights group in Oregon (OCFA) and was secretary for one in Virginia (VICFA) for almost four years. I know this is a vegan site, but I must say I know many people personally who have had their animals and equipment taken and destroyed. Three families with hogs and three families with dairies selling raw milk or intending to sell raw milk in states where RAW MILK IS LEGAL! Plus I know people who know people with other dairies or cattle and elk ranches who have had nasty run-ins with the state. These families have had SWAT TEAMS show up at their homes before dawn and arrest them at gunpoint and slaughter their animals without proof of disease, wrongdoing or anyone being sick. One friend had to live through an encampment on her property for months and months. Another's farm has been raided THREE TIMES in a year. I know I'll probably be reprimanded for saying this here, but it's time for us to make it very clear to our elected officials that the Patriot Act is unpatriotic, that RealId infringes on our rights, that people are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, that EVERY ONE of our 10 rights in the Bill of Rights is to be honored and respected. I used to think not drinking raw milk anymore would make me safe from the government. I don't believe that anymore.

Wow, that's horrific. I can't even believe the Patriot Act is still around. I studied it in college in an American Civil Liberties class, and at that time it seemed temporary when it it had just been introduced. It really does flagrantly violate the constitution.

It's crazy how people are not doing anything wrong -- just bringing chocolate across the border or selling raw food -- and would be arrested/interrogated/jailed/raided for such simple victimless non-crimes.

I hope everything works out for the cacao "traffickers". Sheesh.

and then i'm simultaneously reading about this ridiculous $700 billion federal bailout plan ... i can't help being so mad.. i'll let it go in a couple of seconds but for now- how ridiculous is this world we live in! It is like a really big dirty circus with a never-ending freak-show

This story reminds me that we all need to stay aware of the Codex Alimentarius issue. This is important! This is a plan to control the entire world's food system and access to all alternative medicine. You can read about it, or you can listen to various talks about it on Youtube. Here is part one of a series of nine:
