Hey does there exist a device (electric or other) for easily opening coconuts, especially young coconuts? I'm thinking like a motor-powered knife that slices the top off so you can pour out the juice then extract the meat with a spoon.

Maybe one of those electric knives from Target. Do you think those are strong enough for coconuts?

Thanks!

I just have to keep passing this link on. It changed my relationship with white coconuts from hate/love to love/love. Check it out.

Sorry if this turns you back to a hate/love relationship but those white pointy coconuts must be dipped in toxic chemical preservatives to prevent the exposed flesh from rotting, I bought a few once and it just tastes like chemicals to me (the water and meat). I now buy the natural whole green ones, they are even harder to open but at least don't have toxic chemicals.

Those trimmed white ones are no different than if appes where sold trimmed like that, needless to say powerful chemicals would be needed to prevent exposed flesh from a fruit from rotting when it has to travel for days or weeks.

Even the organic ones???:( How much toxin could get in throught that shell? It's okay. I'm only use 2 or 3 a month. No way I'm giving them up. If I used 2 or 3 a week, that might be different.

Thanks for the info. If I see any green ones, I'll be sure to get some. :)

Did you really find trimmed organic ones? I don't see how that's physically possible, unless there's an organic preservative I'm not aware of. Organic also doesn't always equal healthy, organic sugar, french fries and cigarettes would still cause cancer and other diseases.

I've found shaved organic young coconuts that were tightly wrapped in plastic to keep them from oxidizing and turning brown. Yes, plastic has some chemicals but it's still better than formaldehyde.

But we really all should be eating as local as possible. Young coconuts are a decadent luxury for those of us who don't live in the tropics. And if you get to travel somewhere that has local young coconuts (like me when I was in China this summer) drink as many as you can!

All the ones I say are also wrapped in plastic, plastic alone is not going to prevent it from rotting, it still needs to be soaked in powerful preservative chemicals.
