Okay, this has to be the lamest reason to go raw/vegan you'll read on this site, but here goes...

In July, I went to the hair cutters to get a little trim, just all the split ends cleaned up. Well, my stylist got a bit carried away and, before I could scream, she lobbed off about 9 inches and gave me "the Rachel." Oh my poor hair--unceremoniously hacked off, trodden underfoot and swept into the back alley dumpster.

Note the sour mug. I wouldn't have cracked a smile with a gun to my head.

So while she spun me around and did the double mirror thing, I was fighting back the tears and advancing through the stages of grief. Denial, Anger, Depression, Bargaining. Hm... Bargaining. I can bargain.

"Okay body," I quietly began. "If you'll grow my hair back fast, beautiful and healthy, I'll give you whatever you want. I'll eat only spinach for the next six months if that's what it takes. Pretty please? With raw agave on top?"

I had been vegetarian for many years, but definitely from the eat-whatever-I-want-as-long-as-it's-not-meat school of vegetarianism. I had no clue about nutritional yeast, kale, goji berries or chia seeds.

I determined that, to help my poor dorky hair grow back longer, stronger and more beautiful than ever, I was going to eat the most nutritious foods on the planet. I plunged into a raw diet, with the very occasional slip up.

How's it working? Well, it's now September and my growing hair just loves all the almonds, tahini, dark leafy greens, avocados, lemons, and sea veggies I treat it to every week. (my taste buds are loving it too!)

Check out the progress:

And that's not all! Now I can even put it over one shoulder (only just, but still...)

Of course, I'll keep you updated as it grows.

That's happened to me, too. Now I only get my hair cut once a year! Working on getting butt-length hair!

I haven't noticed it growing any faster, but it sure is easier to comb since raw! And that means less getting pulled out!

Woah, maybe it IS gowing faster. I just noticed in my avatar (late May) it's about at the topline of my bra in front... now it's well below the bottom of the back of the bra and I did get it cut in between!

You may have hit on a secret extra benefit of being raw, Go Go!

Your hair is certainly keeping it's side of the bargain.....I do have to say that you hair is both beautiful shorter and longer.

That's very encouraging to hear! I hope my hair follows. Go butt-length!

Yes, I have noticed that my hair is easier to manage. I wash it less often too, which would have been just impossible before. I thought at first that was just a short hair thing, but now I'm convinced that, with perfect foods and plenty of exercise, I'm finally treating it right.

How sweet. Thank you! I will say, it does look healthy when it's cut. Hopefully with this nutrient rich lifestyle, it will grow long and keep that healthy "just cut" look always. Before, if it went too long, it ended up looking like an old horse. Perhaps that stylist did me a favor after all!

How nice! Thanks much. Just wait until you see it after six months of raw. I can't wait!

I don't HAVE any hair! *laughing*

I've never had healthy hair, but I will say that I hope raw food helps it get shinier, stronger and LONGER eventually....

I have hair probably 1-2 inches long all over my head, and it's red. I get alot of attention from BOTH sexes... *laughing*

I LOVE your hair!!! Shorter or longer, it's GORGEOUS!!! So shiny and STRAIGHT!!!

Your hair looks pretty in the before and after. LOL. I bet/hope you've stumbled upon other benefits, right?!

LOL, and sheesh, I've been raw for a year and a half. Could you please tell my hair that's supposed to make it grow faster? It didn't get the memo. Aw well, anyways, it is strong and healthy. I would like longer hair. The thing about my hair is that the longer it grows, the curlier. I don't know why it does that -- but more curls = looks shorter.

I can relate - my hair was butt-length in May, until I hacked it off to shoulder length for cancer patients. I know it was my choice, but I'm still sad & I miss my long hair :(

I see all your pictures with beautiful hair.

What kind of seaweeds? Kelp powder? Put in salads?????? I love dulse. Where are you buying your sea veggies.

Thanks for sharing--you have gorgeous hair even if you didn't see it that way at one time.

Great growth! It looks nice and silky, too. Besides raw food and healthy eating, hair care is also one of my great interests.

Oh it looks lovely and healthier than ever.

I can tell w/i a week if I fall off the raw wagon that my nails, skin change and then when I am back raw the nails grow thick and fast and the skin is soft as a baby's behind !

I'll have to pay better attention to my hair. I know due to heat, sweating, etc. it seems to grow a good inch per month where I live.

So where's that before shot:confused:?

Your short hair is longer than mine, and it looks great!!! BUT, I totally know what you mean...my trim and different style turned into much shorter and now I can't pull it back....sigh...your post is encouraging...I keep thinking, by Spring I should look like myself again:p

I can so-o relate to being bummed out after too much hair has been cut off! this has happened several times in my life, first with a mother who was scissor-happy and didn't like to see me with much hair in the least, and later on with haircutters who didn't know what to do with naturally curly hair other than cut it too short. One time, after I had painstakingly grown out my hair to below shoulder length, despite my entreaties, a haircutter proceeded to lop it off at EAR length - THE dorkiest look ever on me! I didn't let anyone with scissors near me for at least a year and a half - this was when I was in my 20s.
Like you, my hair is loving raw, and some parts are growing in curlier, which I like!

Thank you for all your sweet replies! As requested, here is a before-the-mighty-chop photo. Taken in late June, two weeks before the massacre.

http://www.geocities.com/annestewart2000/JulyLong.jpg

Sure it was long, but not silky, healthy long. Just sort of long and meh. Lots of damage and dryness. There was definitely a reason the stylist went bucko with the scissors.

So now it's October and you're probably thinking it's too soon after my last photo shoot to show any progress. Ah, think again! This hair has never had it so good. I am happy to report that my hair has reached the shoulder blade threshold.

http://www.geocities.com/annestewart2000/October.jpg

It's a miracle. Seriously, it's never been so healthy this long after a chop. And it's certainly never grown this fast. Not only that, but my skin is so clear and hydrated. I feel wonderful.

(By the way, I do love short hair on other people. Many lucky women can wear it and look so beautifuly un-dorky that it makes me jealous. But for me and my face, I prefer long. And we're nearly there!)

Hey your hair is looking great in those photos! Yes, raw DOES make one's hair and nails grow faster - I attribute this to the green smoothies that I drink daily. This did NOT happen on a diet that had animal protein in it either. Greens, hemp protein and chia seeds rock in this regard as well as their myriad of other benefits!
