Thanks all. I started devoting myself to raw in Dec of '07. Although I used to eat some raw foods before that, I still ate mostly very large portions of processed foods & animal products. After doing some research about health, nutrition, and the U.S. food industry, it was a no-brainer to conclude that going raw was better for my overall health.

Shashibala: No I wasn't a runner before going raw. In fact I could only run about 2 blocks without getting winded and sore. But I kept at it because I'm a true believer that our bodies are designed for exercise and not sitting down most of the time. Now I run at least 4 to 6 miles 3/4 times a week and participate in running events monthly. I'm up to 18 events so far and trying to get to at least 20 running events for '08:

Feb 9 - 4 mile run (done)
Feb 23- 5k (done)
Mar 16- 5k (done)
Mar 22- 5k (done)
Mar 30- 10K(done)

Rawstrength: I've been 90% raw since April '08. I usually try to get some type of exercise in everyday. I don't do gyms because I get distracted too easily. I have weights and a treadmill (which I rarely use because I'm an outdoor runner) at home, plus I don't have any "set" days that I only do certain exercises. I like to have the freedom to mix things up. So my routine would be as thus:

Stretching-daily
Weights-2 to 3 days a week
Running-3 or 4 days a week
Core workouts 2 to 3 days a week.

-Thanks. Walking does wonders just as good as running. Combine that w/eating healthy and you'll have good results. To help motivate me to exercise, I started participating in running/walking events for charity. -Not only are you donating your efforts to a worthy cause, you also help yourself strive for better health. Either way, it's a rewarding feeling. Here's one I just did on Sat (9-21-08) for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

It's good to know that people of all color are finding out about or have been living this lifestyle! :) Before getting Alissa's book a little over a year ago, I didn't know of ANYONE who ate this way! Where I live, I do see more and more people or all races interested in this way of living. I go to California often...I'll have to look you up in Berkeley!!! :)

You look great! I started running (well trying to) again. I am having one heck of a time. In 2001 I trained for a 15 mile race but ended up getting hurt before the race and ended up doing the 5k (which I wasn't even supposed to do that but couldn't let my entry fee go to waste..lol) and then after that doing a triathlon. I herniated a disc in my back two months after my triathlon. So I got out of shape. I have now been eating raw (most days 100%) and started jogging/walking. I am still pretty winded. I just alternate jogging and walking. What did you do to get to running 5K and 10K's? How long did it take you to get to that point? i can't seem to run for more than a few minutes at a time right now! I moved from Michigan to Colorado so I am not sure if it is the altitude I can't get adjusted to. I would think not as I have lived her for over 1.5 years now! Any tips?

I had to start very slowly since I never was a runner to begin with. So I walked for about 3 weeks (daily) to gain at least a little bit of leg strength & endurance. My goal wasn't to run 5k/10k's, but only to try to make just 1 mile. So you image how I felt on top of the world when I made 1 mile. I simply kept doing 1 milers until I could do it with ease, then I pressed for 2 miles. Rinse & repeat. When I heard about the charity events, that's when I started doing some type of training. So overall it took me a little over 3 months or so. But again, I wasn't a runner so I had to go all the way back to square one: How to run correctly, how to breathe correctly, how to warm up correctly, how to hydrate correctly, what to eat before a run, etc.

So I would say take your time & be patient. Listen to your body and don't try to overdo it. Everyone is different. If it takes you 1 hour to do a 5k (about 3.1miles), that 1 hour is just as good as the person who does in 26 mins. If you look back at the opening post you'll see all the events I did. Most of them I did between 25-27 mins. But there are some where I did 45-60 mins. But ya know what? It doesn't matter because I still accomplished 2 major things, I helped a charity group and I got my exercise in. So my 45 to 1 hour runs felt just as good as my 25 to 27 min. runs. It's beautiful either way! Hang in there and take it day by day.

Blessings!

I agree with all the folks YOU LOOK GREAT. Great witness and testimony to those wanting to change. It takes time and I know for some it takes longer but keep hanging in.

I used to run, hate it so now it's usually ecliptical at gym or Turbo classes plus weight training about 5x weekly. I'm not religious about it, but do what I can and work hard at it. I'm also getting into the sauna about 10 minutes per workout. It took a while to get up to 10 minutes but hey from the long haul in life without living in pain.

My ex-church, mainly Af. American, www.heritagechristiancenter.com is surely not excited to give up their fried Southern foods. I respect their decisions, but I was pretty much a wallflower (alone) with my eating habits.

Keep up the great inspiration you are to all here. Everyone move at your own pace and now we have great leaders here to follow, but each is on their own journey.

PKing,

It is good to read some success stories from the testosterone side of the fence. There are way more ladies on this forum. Nothing wrong with that, just less that is specific to guys.

I am currently a meat protein, carb, fat eating and beer drinking 47 year old looking for some guidance. Probably never be totally RAW, but would like to bring some clean, balanced living to my body. I am currently 47, 6'2 and approximately 279 lbs with high BP regulated by prescription and high'ish cholesterol. After the rush of the holiday, I have made the commitment to... well, commit to better choices. I am looking from yourself and all that have gone down this path on how to best start, daily juice/food recommendations, etc. I have all the tools (Omega Vert 350HD and Vitamix 5200 with a BT Wildside Jar). I just need to move beyond just using once in a while, to every day. My only healthy choice today is that my breakfast and lunch consists of vegan protein/fiber shakes and gluten free snacks. But on top of this I stray. I tend to go to snack center when stress hits as well as hit bad things on weekend.

I have become a pain ridden slug. Knees hurt, L3 back issue and no energy. If I do not do something soon, I am going to be in a world of hurt.

Awesome to read your success and just looking for some info to help me begin my journey.

Thanks!

Ted
