Anyone here like running? I don't, but I'm training for a half-marathon to get myself motivated to exercise again lol

Any tips or advice on any special foods, nutritional needs for runners, or advice?

I've been 8 days 90% raw, taking iron, b12, spirulina, ribose, bee pollen, Gold Rush (check out my second website) msm, D3, and Sunfood Nutrition enzymes!

If you are wondering why soo many things, I was already taking bee pollen, Gold Rush, MSM, D3 and Enzymes...but I added b12, iron, spirulina, and ribose for running.

I know it seems like a lot, but I have been doing really great so far, and can run a lot more than I could before without any pain-and in a limited amount of time.

Curious if there are any other raw foodists on here who like to run :)

You might wish to listen to the interviews here with raw vegan runner, Tim VanOrden. (http://rawkinradio.com) He doesn't use any of the things you're using.. no "special foods", etc. He's also got quite a few vids on YouTube. He'll be giving a talk here in SoCal next week which I'll be taping and posting (with his permission).

I am runner too. A runner who got injured all the time. Now i am quite sure i know why. I built much muscle by walking with soft shoes(upper legs) and riding my bike. That doesnt built feet muscles and lower leg muscles that stabilze the whole locomotor system while you re running. But when you re running you need these lower leg and feet muscles to less the impact. They have to have the same strentgh like your upper leg muscles. When you re legs are not telling you that you re fit when your feet are tired. You dont run too hard and dont get injured.

My goal is know to walk bare foot all the time(in snow too). I am training very often. For people who have not well(enough) formed feet its the best therapie too. I am one of those(caused by shoes).

The benefits of walking bare foot all the time are huge. You get much more free. You can walk everywhere when you lost you re shoes, you re whole system gets more stabil, you re immune system gets stronger, you feel much more connected, its much fun.

You dont have to go bare foot to work :D

I just started 100% raw three days ago (I've been doing the "raw thing" on and off for 20 years, so this is another "here we go again!") and am completely adopting Tim Vanorden as my "raw stepfather" (I'm actually 3 years older than him, tho...lol)

this guy completely inspires me (runningraw.com). And Revvell, I listened to your interviews with him-THANK YOU for posting those! VERY exciting!

I love that he doesn't do expensive supplements and eats only fruits and veggies, says no nuts are seeds (although he was using hemp and flax seeds in a smoothie video) and runs like crazy. His mantra is that he's doing it "just to see what he can do" with it, just to see what his body can do. I LOVE that and I'm making it my own mantra as well.

So, I can see using this approach what I did wrong all the other times I went raw. I could never make it past 3 or 6 weeks. It's SO much psychological. We just have to be ready. Making my reason for being raw to "see what can happen", I can be in that mindset indefinitely.

If I say it's to lose weight? That one doesn't last. If I say it's to have more energy? that doesn't hold out against cooked food cravings. If I say, though, its to see what my body can do while running? THAT is something I can stick to. I WANT to see what can happen. I WANT to have the long term experience like he's having. now, THAT I can stick to, and in a healthy raw way-with just fruit and veggies and maybe a little bit of nuts and seeds. I mean SMALL.

Also the other times I've done raw I didnt' really exercise enough. I would start detoxing and blow it off, but this time I'm running everyday. (well, actually power walking as I build up to running). That makes the transition so much easier and really helps with detox.

Just sharing cause I feel so inspired. Thanks for listening! :)

I despise running right now. 8D I purchased Yuri Elkaim's Treadmill Trainer program, and today I tried it for the first time. It's fun, and you get a good workout, but you really don't get bored at all. anyways, I did that for as long as I could (over 12 mins? I didn't have my watch. :p), and since it was sunny today, i got a slight burn on my face. I had put coconut oil on my face earlier, and I put some on again when I noticed the burn, so it feels much better than my burns usually feel. :D I'm committing to at least 10 mins a day, but as I build up my endurance I'll probably start going longer. :)

I'll have to start scoping out different routes, though, 'cause I was running in circles!

That's CUTE.......I agree with you. When you hate something that you know is Good for you.....Just do it. Try Music and a watch to improve your time. I used to run but now I still RUN in My Heart.

Now I Dance....in the grocery line, Bank, Anywhere, they always have music playing so I can't let that go to waste. Gotta Recycle it. I do try to be suttle........I just keep moving.

Lol, I agree. I think it's improving my confidence as well, you know? I really hate exercising around people, and doing it in the city is worse than anything...except maybe not doing it at all. :p

My Advice/Tips as a former competitive runner --
--Always have a piece of fruit or few immediately after running,
--stretch only after you're warmed up and again after you're finished,
--build up mileage slowly so you don't injure yourself,
--do plenty of other varied exercises to balance out the muscles in your body,
--drink green smoothies,
--listen to your body.
--Take a day off from impact-bearing exercise at least once per week.

Did I mention to build up the mileage gradually? That's a big one! That's often the difference between building a strong, healthy body and causing wear and tear that may not be obvious until an injury pops up its head.

Case in point: I recently started running again very regularly, and I built up the mileage way too quickly. My body wasn't ready. It felt GREAT for a few weeks. I love the way running makes me feel. But then I started having knee problems for the first time in my life.

When I ran cross country, at the beginning of season I remember we always would build no more than about 10% more mileage per week. My coach was a biologist and always wanted us to understand the physiology behind his recommendations. (We were state champions in the biggest division in Florida, so I think he did a good job!) I really, really should have known better!

I also think there were other factors (I was eating only locally, and therefore was not taking in high-glycemic fruits like bananas), but I think that most injuries can be prevented by doing the above. And an injury-free runner is a happy runner!

Are you by any chance running the Detroit half-marathon? I've run that the past few years (I also am from Michigan), and I really love that event! It's the only "race" (although I didn't treat it as one except against myself) I've ever competed in, mostly I just run for fun, but it's fun to train up to something challenging once a year and to run with 10,000 other people.
I've never had any issues with energy or anything, although I definitely agree with the advice to build up mileage slowly, and to take a week off now and then (not soon before the race obviously). I find it's possible to get obsessed with running to the point that you have to do it every day or at least every other day, and sometimes joints and cartilage and things need several days in a row with no running to heal.

M.R.F.,

Just get out there and run. I have been approximately 75 - 80% raw for 1 year and my ex-boss got me back into running by talking me into doing a 5k race last year at one of the local colleges. I had been raw for maybe a few weeks at the time and had only practiced 2 or 3 times beforehand. I ran it in 26:36. I ran the same race this November and ran it in 24:42. Not bad for being 44 years old and not having done much running in the last 20 or so years. I have been getting more and more into it since this last race and may end up running as much as I can thru the winter. During the winter when I typically put my bike up I walk or take the bus everywhere. I have been running more and more lately and enjoying it more than I thought I would. The best thing I can advise you is make sure to drink lots of water and make sure to add a little bit of sea salt to it. It is much better for you than drinking sports drinks. Good luck.

Ditto on all that's said. Personally, I strive to get the majority of my nutrients from natural foods rather than supplements. But to each his/her own. As for running, try to make it as enjoyable as possible. Take your time and listen to your body!! I've only beeen running for a year, and let me tell you-it has been one the best things I've ever done. I now have better knowledge, a deeper appreciation, and the utmost respect for the human body and its wonders. So keep it fun!

I don't know exactly what you want from running, ie fatloss, improved CV health, muscle endurance, etc.

But I can say that HIIT (High Intensity Intermittent Training) is amazing for all the above. It works in rounds where you go all out for 1 minute then go moderate for 2 mins or all out 30 seconds moderate for 1 min-1 min30. The times can be up to you and how you feel. And you repeat them for 5-8 rounds or so. Best for fat burning, explosive speed and maximazing lung capacity and CV health.

Distance running puts stress on the muscles which causes catbolism or muscle breakdown and actually can lower metabolism and do nothing to BF%. Not the best cardio for fat burning. Our bodies weren't meant to run marathons hence in the story of marathon the runner died after running to tell the news. Instead we were meant for short bursts of intense sprinting to escape predators and get close in for the kill. Long marathon running is exhausting over taxing and useless for the most part.

You're welcome. (just saw this) Tim is wonderful. He's been here chatting with my meetup group. Has amazing energy. He came by after winning a tower run; stayed until about 10:30 p.m. then drove up the coast to sleep and to get up early and do a "fun run" (I think it was like a marathon or something? :p )

You'll be hearing from Tim some more on one of my shows soon, I'm hoping.

:) When I increased the greens and veggies in my lif I saw a change in other bodily functions- with the pounding that running gives I had to adapt -

I have seen it again with the increased Raw foods- expecially smoothies but it was shortlived as my body seems to be using the food and making less "waste" so the previous concern of needding to go while on the go was a concern.

I just pay attention now.;)

I am a raw runner, and its great! I don't do any extra supplementing per se, I find for me I just need extra fats like avocado or seeds. I am running about 4-5miles a day, as well as skiing several hours a day. I find a glass of OJ after my run is a great thing, and maybe a banana. We'll see how I feel when I get higher in my mileage. My goal is to be doing ultras, and snowshoe runs next year. :D

Any reason why you are only eating those few things? I would say in order to increase your mileage and preformance, you will need to eat more and a more varied diet to be sure you are getting enough nutrition to sustain you. What about green smoothies? OJ, bananas, avocados... for me personally, I need some fat in my diet to run/ski daily. Also, green smoothies insure I get lots of healthy greens, fruit, etc even if I am not in the mood to eat.

when you increase the greens in your diet you'll start running every day for two hours and will be longing to do more. It can be frightening how much energy you suddenly have on raw,-it's very unusual to deal with..but it's great! :)

greens like lettuce,broccoli,spinach...i eat them everyday but they lack sugar.
So it is a bit difficult for me to run fast without sugar.
what about dried fruits...30 minutes before running???

I am a raw-living food vegan who likes to run and to some extent effortlessly tend to come in first in my age group. It is definitely the result of my lifestyle

I've been running over a year now but eating high raw only about 3 weeks. I noticed alot of fatigue at first but after 3 weeks of raw I am noticing much improved running performance. I have lost a few pounds so I feel lighter on my feet.
The biggest change so far has been a huge reduction in soreness after each run. My hamstrings feel much looser and my hips and calves don't feel as sore. I used to have to stop and stretch out my hammies all the time, but I haven't had that problem in the last week or so. I definitely credit it to raw foods.
I'm looking forward to more and greater running performance as I mature in this new way of eating. Loving it!

MMATT, pretty far off the mark - you may want to research a bit more. Would you like some references?

Why not try a little lemon juice in your water rather than inorganic rock salt. So called sea salt is just plain old rock salt with a small amount of inorganic dirt added for "good" measure. If you are actually all raw you would know that your body hates salt in any form as it tries to get rid of it as fast as you can put it in. Salt is a natural anti-biotic, or in other words it is "against life" itself. It is pure poison and if you want to end your life in a hard way just swallow a cup of salt and good bye to you. Women used to use salt as an abortive when other poisons were not available. If you are ever lost at sea and try to drink sea water you will only hasten your death, it is that good for you. So just remember the words of the great bard (Shakespeare) "If you poison us do we not die, if you poison us a little do we not die a little?"
