Hey all,
This is my first time sprouting. I started 3 mason jars (with mesh lids) Sunday night - buckwheat, lentils, and quinoa. I've been really careful to rinse them at least twice a day, and I also originally rinsed them all about 5 times before putting them in their jars. It's now Wednesday, and the first two look fine, coming right along, but the quinoa, which is about 1/2 sprouted, has a whole lot of bright, deep pink on it. And it smells way funky! Is this some sort of bacteria, or does quinoa just do this? And if it's bad, any ideas as to why only the quinoa caught it? I've treated all 3 jars the same.... Thanks, guys.

Hi CurlyGirl82,
I actually have had similar discoloration occur -and I think it is just one of those things that happens every once in awhile no matter how careful you are.
Good luck with the next round of quinoa!

Actually, I think the quinoa is turning. I have seen this pinkish stuff and smell on other sprouts, and I would NOT eat it. Here's what sprout people say (won't last long, primarily)

I've sprouted quinoa and had problems with it sometimes too. The last time I had some sprouted (made a porridge with it), I ate it and found out after the fact that is wasn't right anymore. I got pretty sick. I had also fed some to my youngest but she didn't eat too much of it and threw up later on in the day.

Now, I never ever want sprouted quinoa again!!!!! :D Buckwheat and Lentil sprouts work beautifully for me though.

I wonder if it's to be eaten just immediately after you see the sprouting begin??

Just don't eat it when it's the color you mentioned. I'm quite sure of that! Because I did notice the pinkish/purple color on mine after I ate some already. YUCK! No wonder I got sick!
