How's this for abuse of animals? So when someone needs a transplant, they're just going to kill a pig to order? What happens to the rest of the pig? I'll bet it ends up in school lunches, where our children could be eating pig/human genes on a bun.

Scientists are breeding genetically modified pigs for organs

LONDON - British and American scientists are breeding genetically modified pigs in the hope of providing organs for transplant to humans, the project leader wrote in a newspaper Sunday.

Scientists in London and California have begun conducting the genetic experiments to find a solution to record-long waiting lists for organ transplants, fertility specialist Robert Winston said in an opinion piece written for Britain's Sunday Times.

In Britain alone, around 8,000 patients are waiting for a transplant.

"People needing a new heart or liver are waiting for someone else to die - usually a violent death in a traffic accident," Winston wrote in the newspaper. He said his team was "trying to modify pigs so their organs might save the lives of humans."

The scientists are introducing human genes into the animals to reduce the chances of the organs being rejected by patients, as has been common in previous attempts to use animal tissues, said Wintston, who heads the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology at London's Hammersmith Hospital.

Working in tandem with Dr. Carol Redhead of the California Institute of Technology, Winston's team has injected human genes directly into male piglets, adding them to the animal's sperm.

He said that pigs involved in experiments had successfully produced transgenic sperm, but acknowledged that British and European laws had prevented the team from using the pigs to mate.

The Sunday Times newspaper reported that the experiments would be moved to the United States following difficulties with funding and regulations in Britain. It said the pigs would be bred in Missouri.

"Our U.S. friends will benefit from our technology, and yet another British innovation will be jeopardized; the income we might have generated for Britain will be lost," Winston wrote.

Some scientists have previously criticized the idea of using animal organs for human transplant, saying the technique risks spreading animal viruses to humans. Winston said his research project is attempting to breed virus-free pigs.

Awesome. Now you can eat pork chops made from the source that provided your new liver! Bon appetit.

Let's make a genetically modified pig that is identical to a human, that way there will be no risk of organ rejection.
Oh . . . wait . . . no . . .

Pigs are extremely intelligent. I was never the same after Charlotte's Webb which is largely based on this truth (that they're pretty smart). I actually think this is when I announced to my family that I was no longer eating meat at 9. Pigs probably know what's going on. Terrible and probably what you mention Rawstrength is not that far away if it isn't already being done.

Yeah this is aggrivating! I got a chance to pet pigs on the tummy at Farm Sanctuary recently, and they were so warm and sweet.. I cannot imagine cutting them up into pieces! :(

I can't even believe this is happening, but it is, wow.

I agree! The other night there was a show on called "Modern Marvels" and it was all about the pig. It showed how intelligent they are, etc.. Then showed meat production, and how pig's bellies are made into bacon!!

It also showed genetic engineering of pigs, including 'collecting' semen from a male pig then inserting it into a female with a syringe! It also showed the pig valve that can be used in human hearts, and the fact that pigs may be used to 'grow' other 'replaceable' organs in humans--they are working on it!!!

Grrrrr!

Speaking of pigs.. there is new info about Hormel abusing their pigs, and an undercover video too:

Warning: it is very graphic and extremely disturbing!!! I hope these guys get MAJOR punishment!!!

^^^^ Sometimes you know it's really difficult to love humans when we do stuff like this. But I try. What gives us the right to manufacture parts from other living beings? Why not keep your own heart and body healthy in the first place? First thing to do with your diet? Um, stop eating bacon. Ya think?

This is the most terrible thing I've ever seen. I wish I knew where those workers lived. I will never feed my family any meat or dairy ever again. Thank you for sharing that video, and I am especially grateful to the guy who went intot he plant to expose them.

Yes it is SO terrible. I was crying when I tried to watch it!

I also agree about the workers, and hope they will have to pay majorly for what they are doing!!! They are pure evil, in my opinion!!

I am really happy that you will not be giving your family meat or dairy anymore! That is great! Unfortunately, this video is not just an isolated case, but this kind of abuse happens on a daily basis to billions of animals. I get so depressed about this...

The lack of respect for life shown in that video is unbelievable; I am sure its not an isolated case and I think if you could do that to an animal you could also do it to a human.

I agree, what sort of person seeks out and keeps that job? I mean this isn't one isolated sicko--this is every sicko that works in one of those places--imagine, even if you aren't a psychopath going into that job--I am sure it would literally drive a human mind crazy.

Oh, I am so, so sorry that I was ever a participant in those concentration camps. I feel a moral obligation as an American human that can speak the language of those ______, to do something to help ease their suffering.

At first, I was brainstorming ways to convert more people to veganism through shock tactics. If you ahve ideas, I'd love to hear them. Now, I have decided for now to settle with convincing the people in my life to buy from locally owned small butcher shops that deal with quality instead of quantity and are less likely to be so sadistic and the animals less diseased in mind and body.

I am not on a fully raw diet nor am I a vegetarian but believe that you are what you eat. The better the food you consume, the better you are and if you show food respect you are showing it to yourself. If you eat meat you should make sure of where it comes from and the conditions the animal lived in. Similar would apply to fruit and veg.

That factory is worse than anything I could have imagined and I am now sure it’s not the only one. I think the factory shown is a place of misery and pain it’s like the WW2 concentration camps and this misery radiates and infect all those working in that environment. I don’t want to go to deep with this but like if you are in the company of someone positive and cheery you feel good and likewise if you in the company of someone down or depressed it can also affect you. The employees are in the company of miserable animals and surly this is affecting them and they are just not mentally strong enough or clever enough not to have allowed them selves to get into that environment. The issue with these places comes from the top and how they are financed and run and how life of an animal is just viewed as a piece of financial stock and dividend. They show no respect for life the animals are bloated up and are in misery. When they are slaughtered I'm sure it’s not pleasant and it’s without feeling. The meat is then presented on supermarket shelves in a sanitized way which seems to detach from the view that this was once a living animal which is also wrong.

How can an animal which was breed artificially and probable never saw its mother, never felt loved , or secure, fed some c**p to fatten it up, its natural instincts suppressed, beaten, tortured, frightened and generally reared in an hateful environment ever be good for us to eat. Surly by eating something like this we are taking into ourselves the poor animal’s misery and it’s becoming part of us.

Totally agree, cavany! I hate the factory farming industry more than anything. It sickens me to NO end. So frustrating that most of the population doesn't care, even when you try to educate them.

Its so sad, if people just ate correctly in the first place...this wouldn't need to happen:(.
