I came across this forum by googling raw food for rats, and I saw a discussion in which I wasn't able to post, about how long raw vegetrian rats live.
Immedeatly I signed up because I had to tell you!
i have a friend who developes diets for animals and animals he works with ( big cats ect) He feeds his rats purely raw vegan food.
How long does our average rat live? maximum 3 years, usually fraught with tumors and illness =(
How long do his rats live? Uuh, how about SEVEN years? Consistantly. He has a few of his female rats on record now, aiming to break it =)
Not only do they live seven years but they have no tumors or illness, they remain healthier then the non raw food fed rats (and even vegan rats/vegetarian).
I also joined, because what my rats eat, I eat. I guess this can kind of show how my diet would be affecting me too, but the real reason is I'm not going to buy two separate foods because what I feed them is perfectly healthy (healthier then anything else in this case) for me as well.
I was vegetarian for awhile, and I fed my rats accordingly. I allowed them dairy, they grew large and one actually got a tumor. The possibility of a male rat getting a tumor is 4 percent.
Sadly, I've seen rat owners whose rats were repeatedly getting heart disease, but they still stick to their hersay that rats should be fed lab blocks and cannot be made vegetarian. They say its irresponsible... as their rats are dying from heart disease, cancer and tumors. I don't know if that makes me angry or sad.
The thing to remember is that their food pyramid is a bit different then ours, their base is whole grains, when ours would be fruit.

Now 'xcuse me as I dig around in the forums a bit =D
