View Full Version : Young coconut meat??
Can anyone suggest an alternative for this. I am trying to introduce more raw foods to my family. starting with deserts and keep coming across this hard to find (where I live anyway) ingredient. Thanks

I don't think there's anything like it, texture-wise you could use avocado, but it obviosuly won't taste the same.
Maybe avocado or banana. I get my thai coconuts at the local asian market here.

Have you tried the dessert recipes in Alissa's book? If I remember right she doesn't really use alot of young coconut in her recipes, although there is a picture of her drinking from one.
Thanks for that, I will try substituting other fruits and see how we get on!

I use raw coconut from the bulk bin, its dried and sliced, but in most cases, it works. Some recipes, it wouldn't work, but its better than nothing! I simply stock up when i go into the city (about an hour and a half away) and keep it stored in my fridge for months. I am pretty sure you could order it online as well in bulk.
