i've been really trying to only eat truly ripe fruit lately...it wasn't too long ago that i read that bananas are only ripe once they have brown spots all over them.

anyway, i went to the store today and got some granny smith apples...after, i got to thinking--when do you really know if they are ripe? they are obviously going to be firm, and they are always green and tart. anyone have a clue about that?

also, any other not so obvious signs that certain fruits are ripe?! thanks!!

Apples don't ripen any more after they are picked. Other fruit like peaches, nectarines, mangos, apricots, plums, avocados yield slightly to pressure when pressed/squeezed as do cantelope and honeydew, only less so.
