Hi all,

I bought a durian today for the second time. The first time i threw it away because I could not handle the smell:eek:. Since everyone is talking great things about the durian i trying it again. I want to know what are the health benefits from eating a durain fruit? I heard they are high in sulfer which is great for skin and hair. Have you heard of this too?

give durian a chance. try to get past the smell. once you get used to eating it.... you wont notice the smell.
the first time i tried it i thought i would vomit.....but i worked past the smell and now i dont find it offensive at all....in fact i rather like it.

its all what you get used to. now that said.... i wouldnt want you to think i enjoy the scent of dirty gym socks LOL. thats what it smells like to me.
now i smell the sweetness in the durian as well as the funky smell.
its a treat i enjoy from time to time.

i dont know what the health bennies are but i am sure like any other fruit.... its good for you on some level.

good luck.

The way I look at it, anything that I have to "acquire a taste for" doesn't belong in my body. Durian is not naturally grown in my local area, it's not in MY season, therefore, I'm not interested.

There are plenty of other fruits and veggies which have the same qualities/nutrients and those, I eat. I'm of the KISS (Keep It Simple Sexy) mind-set.

2. tastes like vanille pudding, only much better.

Mmmm I love me some Durian...

Yum I was just in Australia and the poor cleaning lady could not figure out where the smell was coming from and kept washing the waste baskets ( I only bought I small amount and kept it in the mini bar freezer but once you eat it the smell lingers...)

Yes Durian does have some great health benefits over other fruits but still not worth forcing yourself to eat it if you do not like it.

Here it is (I did not write this): A durian is a fruit with a strong smell. Many people do not like the smell, but its flavour is loved by some people, especially in Southeast Asia. Its flavour has been compared to custard.

Durian is large spikey fruit with a sulfuric smell. Almost everyone finds this fruit either repulsive or addictive. Few fall in between. Durian is rare in that it is a significant source of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

In Thailand, Durian is banned from many public areas because of the smell. Thailand's Ministry of Health warns against eating more than two sections of durian per day, as people have occasionally been known to die from excessive durian intake. People are killed every year by durians falling from trees.

You can find durian at your local Asian market. A typical durian has 5 sections of fruit. When it is ripe, a seam should be visible down the outside of each section of the shell. To eat, pull apart along the shell seams and remove the yellow pod of fruit inside.

Durians are sold whole, or cut open and divided into segments, which are wrapped in clear plastic. The flesh is mostly eaten fresh, often out-of-hand. It is best after being well chilled in a refrigerator. Sometimes it is simply boiled with sugar or cooked in coconut water, and it is a popular flavoring for ice cream. Javanese prepare the flesh as a sauce to be served with rice; they also combine the minced flesh with minced onion, salt and diluted vinegar as a kind of relish; and they add half-ripe arils to certain dishes. Arabian residents prefer to mix the flesh with ice and sirup. In Palembang, the flesh is fermented in earthen pots, sometimes smoked, and eaten as a special sidedish.

The Health Benefits like

* Durian fruit helps lower cholesterol,
* A strong blood cleanser.
* Contains high levels of the amino acid tryptophan, known to alleviate anxiety, depression, and insomnia, and create feelings of euphoria, by raising levels of serotonin in the brain
* A good muscle builder. Contains high levels of soft proteins.
* Asian legends say that durian is a powerful aphrodisiac.

I don't look at numbers or health claims that are made. Most of it is nonesense anyways. I have trust that my body's instincts know what's best for me.

Oddly enough, I like the smell of durian but I don't like eating durian.
Actually, I like the taste of durian, too. It's the texture of durian that bothers me. I dislike the creamy/fibrous/filmy texture. Maybe I would like a durian smoothie . . . but I tried durian in China where I had no access to a blender.
As for health benefits, durian is rich in sulfur, so it has many of the same healing properties as other sulfur rich foods such as broccoli, radishes, kale, onion and garlic.

My friend puts whole durian in freezer, takes out when ready to cut and tastes like custard. I'm beyond the smell and don't remember it last time when I ate it but remember delicious.

I bought it once and threw it out. The smell was awful and my freezer smelled like durian to. Both my husband and I could not stand the stinky smell it releases. Its very strong.
