Hi everyone,

I am a raw food newbie and im wondering if cacao or carob powder is best. Is the taste really different between the two? I am only going to order one and I will be using it to make desserts and adding it to smoothies. I know its probably a personal thing, but I was looking for some recommendations. Thanks!:)

Hi there.:)

Well it really does depend on your personal preferance. To me, cacao tastes like chocolate and carob tastes like a lame chocolate wannabe. It also has a slight bitterness that I don't like. Other people enjoy it or even prefer it over cacao. I personally love cacao (raw cacao that is) for it's taste and the fact that it knocks carob out of the galaxy when it comes to antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. BUT some people have an adverse reaction to it, it's been said to cause a freaky, jittery kind of wired feeling. Then again some have no reaction to it at all. I've had up to 50 grams a day with no reaction at all. (well ok a bit of a buzz:D) So it's a bit of a gamble esp. if you have a sensitive system. Hope that helps!:)

After 3 days at the Raw Spirit Festival where I got more free raw cacao than one would think possible, I purchased more raw carob. One, I don't like the way cacao makes me feel; two, because carob is less expensive and 3, carob tastes like chocolate and works for me.

I'd google the two and see what YOU come up with for the qualities you are looking for.

As far as antioxidants and nutrients, I get them from fresh, raw, organic fruit and veggies.

I'd google the two and see what YOU come up with for the qualities you are looking for.

It depends on what you mean by best. For best tasting, I think cacao is great. However, I also find cacao very addicting and not in a good way and sometimes I don't feel good after eating too much.

You've hit on a raw food controversial subject. I think there is a thread around here that discusses this in depth.

At the Raw Spirit Fest there were some speakers that made cacao sound like the greatest superfood on the planet and others that likened it to cocaine.

I just blogged about it on my RFT blog. I've been eating cacao the last few days and am having major problems. ::::Smacks self on the forehead:::: I know that stuff is NOT healthy, but I've been suckered in again. It's like the song of the siren! Ack.

It might not be healthy for you. It's different for everyone. I've never had an addictive reaction to raw cacao. Maybe it could happen with roasted cacao though.
