since going raw has anyone seen them fade or go away and what about those dreaded blackheads and the white ones. detox is fun lol.
i heard about exausted adrenals and stuff im guessing that being 100% raw for long enough these things will go.
my circles are not black they bluey purple which is nothing like my dads my mum doesnt get them and i have her eyes so thats somethings hopeful lol. i kind of believ you can combat heridtary aswell. because our ancestors never ate this way at least i don't think so

Hi dragon,
The black circles are in the kidney area and also below that is the large intestine area. I have heard that they can be caused by lack of sleep and also food allergies. Mine have definately gotten better although there is still some puffiness, probably from the bad international delight cream I drink in my coffee. As for the skin, almost 100% better and I am only like 85% raw. I was with the family over the weekend of the 4th, ate like crap, and face broke out. Goes to show what we eat really affects our skin.

Hi Dragon - dark circles can indeed be caused by adrenal weakness. As far as their fading, be patient. It all depends on how dysfunctional the adrenals were before going raw. When I did a search on another site, I found the following list of foods that are supposed to help with adrenal function: celery, kale, chard, olives, chlorella/spirulina. I'm guessing all seaweeds would help.

HI Dragonfist.
I just read this last night. It is from "eating for Beauty" by David Wolfe.
Dark circles under the eyes are related to having an exhausted adrenal system. Coffee contributes to this as do other stimulants, such as refined sugar (soda, candy) cigarettes and recreational drugs. Dark circles may also be caused by a potassium overdose ( eating too many foods high in potassium)
Dark circles can be corrected by eating foods high in organic sodium such as celery, chard, kale, spinach, olives, unwashed sea veggies and by using Celtic Sea Salt. Cucumbers and pumpkin seeds may also be effective.
Blessings~

hey :D well actually they got a bit worse lol but i have been reading up about the water cure i never knew how long it actually takes to rehydrate your body. so im starting this properly now ill keep you posted. i read that it takes near a few months to begin rehydrating your system madness! it sure would explain a lot. i mean it said something like you could have clear urine during the day but if your first morning flow isn't as clear as in the day then you are dehydrated plus your body isn't absorbing the water it's just passing through so it says to use sea salt with your water just a little to retent etc. this is totally new to me i never knew how long it really took. my thoughts were if the urine becomes clear then your fine, but it has to always be clear even first thing in the morning. maybe other peoples is but mines never.

I had embarrassing dark circles that were worse than any others I've seen. No amount of make-up (which I hate wearing!) would effectively cover it up, and when I chose not to, people would worry that I was sick, and one woman even worried that I was being beaten up! These had started around the time I was 13 or 14.
Now, I've been on raw since the end of june (100% started in Sept)...
I still have very slight dark circles, but I tossed out my makeup and I can go aroudn with a normal looking face and nobody thinks I am sick or beat up.
In a good light it's hard to tell I even have dark circles. And it's nice to NOT have this be an issue for the first time in 25 years! (I'm 38)

Ha! Well, definitely keep me posted dragonfist70! I've read water is the key to a LOT of health issues that most of us don't even think would be related. And everytime I read about dark circles, water is always mentioned.
It can get complicated, though; one source says to drink tons, others to not drink "too much" (whatever thatis! Varies amongst individuals).
Have you noticed any other skin improvements?
That's a great testimony, rawandnatural -- do you think it's your increased water intake? Unless you're eating a lot of dehydrated stuff, I think most people who eat...raw and natural :D...would be consuming a lot more water through the fresh fruit and vegetables. I know I drink less water but am plenty hydrated since I don't eat packaged or gourmet/dehydrated foods.
And it does seem this natural way of hydrating is superior to drinking water because, while I inherited good skin and have never had skin problems even when on a poor diet, I still noticed marked improvement.

I had adrenal fatigue and my dark circles finally went away this month, after a 30-day Dr. Schulze cleanse and raw food for the past month - so I'm 2 months raw. I felt significantly better after the cleanse, and am happy to maintain that gain on the raw foods. I'm also losing weight, slowly on raw foods. That's another sign of health for me, because I was unable to lose weight before.

Mystical, I am interested in learning more about adrenal fatigue and the
Dr. Schulze cleanse...is there a web-site you can direct me too?
Both my boys and I get dark circles; mild to moderate in color.
They both have food allergies. Since I regulate their food now they have disappeared. They do come back on occassion but I think that is when I slack on their diet. They are not raw but eat a *whole foods* organic diet for the most part with lots of raw fruits/veggies and nuts. NO DAIRY or gluten.
As for my dark circles, I have never intentionally tried to get rid of them,
but when I cleaned up my own diet thru raw and/or whole foods, no dairy,
they are gone now too. I use to have to wear some concealor on them
but nothing now. I don't even see them. I have been raw off/on for 3 years now. More on than off in 2005 (getting better!). I'd say I am high raw the majority of the time. I don't know if it was food allergies or adrenal with me?!?!? But cleaning up my diet helped either way.
It didn't happen overnight though, so keep on at it.
Raw will definately help the complexion too!

I think it's the increased water intake (naturally present in fresh foods). I drink a few glasses of filtered water per day, but yes, I think the abundance of fresh foods is simply flushing out whatever garbage I had been putting in my body previously. I have eaten Lara bars etc before, but I have drastically cut down recently because they tend to be addicting and I overeat on them.
Like with Punky, I never purposely set out to get rid of them. They'd been part of my face for 25 years and I'd assumed I would be stuck with them for life... so it was a nice surprise.

Dr. Schulze's website is : http://www.800herbdoc.com
His approach is Natural Healing - clean out the garbage, and put lots of nutrition in. That's what made me well. I think his herbal cleanses are the best. I did his 30-day detox, which was a week of bowel cleanse, a week of liver, a week of kidney, then a week of bowel. That with hot/cold showers, good thoughts, happy attitude.
There is a discussion board for people following his protocols at

I'm so glad someone's talking about this!
I've been plagued with dark circles under my eyes since 1997 when I had a bout with serious pneumonia which led to chronic asthma.
I'm hoping that coming back to raw will continue the healing process of the lungs as well a possibly ridding me of the dratted racoon eyes (I don't like using makeup either).
In the meantime I've been using an under eye gel with vitamin K that seems to help.

I didn't really notice this until the post. I used to have bad circles under my eyes and I was told they were just food and environmental allergies. I went raw and they dissappeared! I relapsed into cooked and they're as dark as ever. It MUST be internal exhaustion and I just look at them as little pools of toxins under my skin.

Sorry I never replied to your note Mystical. Thanks for the link and info on the cleanse website....
I checked out Dr. Schulze's website and his products look very interesting
and something that might overlapp a lot of raw food philosophies.
Too bad he doesn't list the ingrediants of his products on his website as well.
I am sure they are all natural though by his philosophy.
I've been wanting to do a Ejuva cleanse for a while now.
I wonder if they are similar?!?!?
I think I might have a weak adrenals system too; I was always tired, low energy, mild depression, dark circles.
It's getting better since I nixed the booze and coffee though. But I think it will take a while even raw to heal from years of abuse. Everytime I go raw I feel better and better, but still not where I'd like to be. So I think a cleanse of some sort would be good for me.

Dr. Schulze does list his ingredients on the website. Click on the catalog, and look at the individual formulas, and the ingredients are listed. They are all natural herbs. I make his tinctures too - they are easy to make and they are just herbs.
The ejuva cleanse is different, but toward the same goal, so it would be a matter of preference. I looked at that cleanse too - I was just more attracted to Dr. Schulze's protocols, and I like making things myself, so I liked that if there was a formula I used a lot, I could make up a batch and save a lot of money. I've heard that Ejuva is a very high-quality cleanse though - if it sounds good to you, I'm sure you'd benefit a lot by it.

Hey MysticaL,
I must have missed the ingrediants or been on a different page; I only took a quick glance at it since I am *suppose* to be cleaning house today
I will check it out again. Don't know which cleanse I will do yet. Need to research each one a little better, although they both sound good. The Ejuva Thanks for the information and recommendation! Personal recommendations are the best ;) Sounds like it helped improve your health!

I usually wake up with puffy eyes/dark circles. Are these similar problems? I think they're different. I wonder if the puffiness could be related to too much salt? Or perhaps detox..?
How does one tell if their adrenal system is stressed?
thanks

My awsome raw vegan doctor said tonight in one of his lectures that dark circles under the eyes are from food allergies. He did not mention anything about adrenals though. I don't even know what adrenals are.

Adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys. They secrete adrenaline :)

Dark Circles are gone! Yay. For me I think it was either coffee because it does deplete the adrenal glands or an allergy to the cream I was using in it. I haven't had coffee since July. Definately under the eye is related to kidneys and Adrenals.

I have. I had bluish ones. When I ate cooked and foods I'm allergic to I had DARK circles. When I got the foods I was allergic to out then they became bluish. About a month after I went completely raw I didn't notice that they went away because each day the became lighter I think and gradually were gone. One day I looked and studied my face trying to SEE the circles, but they were gone! Unfortunately they're back now lol, but I'm workin on it.

I read in David Wolfe's Eating For Beauty that if you take dairy out of your diet that the dark circles will go away. I have also read in non-raw books that dark eye circles are a sign of thyroid disease. From what I have read, adrenal problems and thyroid problems go hand in hand. There is a certian reason for it, cannot remember. I was also reading in a book about adrenal problems that adrenal problems affect blood sugar.

Well, I'm 100% raw since 1/1/06 and began transitioning to such in August so I know it's not dairy for me but am wondering about the adrenal connection??? So, since I "cure" with foods (or herbs) does anyone know of adrenal nourishing foods??? Hmmmm? I'll "research." ;)

Thanks so much for this thread! Interesting that some think coffee can worsen dark circles. I have had dark circles for as long as I can remember and have been a coffee drinker as well. Interesting also that some think coffee can exhaust the adrenals. Another good reason to give it up!

I too have had dark circles under my eyes forever. I know since high school, I was accused of using dark shadow under my eyes.
Anyway I have been 99% raw for 17 months and done numerous liver flushes in this time. My dark circles are geting better. Not quite so obvious.
And I never drank coffee! My only caffine addiction was chocolate. Now I am almost over that one. It is weird, when I do chocolate now, my body responds -- quickly! :(
I still have high hopes that whatever I have wrecked in my body will someday be fixed and I'll have a perfect complection. 40+ years is a long time to eat SAD and expect miracles in a little over a year.
