I am in love with all my growing green gentle goodness! Sprouts and microgreens are amazing. If you aren't growing any, then you should be! I am in a college dormitory, in a basement room with one tiny window, with a roommate, and I'm still growing sprouts and harvesting loads of the leafy loveliness everyday. Wheatgrass, arugula, lambsquarters, flax, buckwheat, sunflower, peas, broccoli, radish, pepper cress and more! I've also got some of the most powerful medicinal herbs in the world, such as Holy Basil and astragalus, growing in pots. And delicious delicious culinary herbs like parsley, too. If I can do, then anyone can! In love and injoy!

How do we learn how to do this? I'm interested in consuming more sprouts. Last night I bought a big package of sprouts from the Sprout Man, ate it, and my throat swelled up. Sprouted beans I seem to be very allergic to. Anyway, I'd love just doing my own, but I don't know where to begin. What should I sprout?

Did you rinse them before you consumed? Don't give them up if you enjoy them, try mixing something else with them. The easiest to Grow are Alfafa and SunFlower.

I too need to learn more! Where are you getting all those seeds for the things like lambsquarters?

I have the seeds for mung beans and lentils and I've had them for a week and just don't know how to start. I have Mason jars and bowls, so please, can someone give me really detailed step by step instructions...sort of in the form of "Sprouting for Idiots?"

Thank you so much raw people. I tasted sunflower sprouts for the first time and now I know where to get them and how to sprout them my self.

see veganforlifes post with the sproutpeople link , go there cuz theyre EXPERTS .

and a quicky is , soak seeds from 6 to 12 hours . pour into strainer and rinse every 8 to 12 hours or so . and in sometimes as little as 24 hours youll start seeing little tips of roots sprout out of seed . ITS VERY EASY . i dont like sprouting in jars because fungus . mold whatever it is starts to develop way quicker . big plastic strainers like ya buy at a dollar store work good .

I went to a thrift store yesterday and found a plastic container for microwaving rice (I think). It has a lid, a strainer and a bowl it all fits into. It was 1.49 and I'm really looking forward to using it instead of trying to find a bowl that fits under a strainer to catch the drippings.

I do what MichiganRoman does. I don't use glass jars anymore because the sprouts might look fine in the morning when I left for work and be turning black by the time I get home. I use a jar to soak the seeds in the first place (which I get from a health food store or sometimes as sprounting seeds from a mail order garden supply company). I start them soaking before I go to bed, rinse them out in the am and put them in the strainer. Then I rinse them when I get home, then again in the morning, then again the next night. This can all be done in a shady area or with a cover on. They can be ready to use by then, depending on how big a sprout I'm looking for. If you're soaking them to increase nutrients and digestibility only you can stop here. If you're looking for microgreens you will want to rinse more often and put the sprouts where they can get some indirect light, like near a window.

I like sunflower seeds, buckwheat, peas and broccoli best. I also like red clover (but don't use it often because it is a goitrogenic/estrogenic food), onion, radish (although those are all tiny and you have to watch they don't escape if you're using a strainer!) and mung beans.

You know, my gut reaction is that, "This young lady is really getting her money's worth out of her tuition money!" I mean, your experience of college must be so much more profound than kids swilling keg beer and ordering in pizza.

I'm on top of the sprouts but really want to implement growing leafy greens.

Good for you- I'm proud of you!

These days I'm sprouting broccoli sprouts on a consistent basis. I'd like to be doing more but hey, I'm doing something! And I just love those broccoli sprouts. I use a fine-mesh strainer to rinse them, let them drain, then transfer them back to the bowl. Easy as pie. And it feels so spiritual to be connected to something growing. It's very empowering. Love it! but wanna get on those mini-greens. where to start..............

Stina - I love broccoli sprouts. Slightly spicy, tangy and good! For microgreens, a good way to start is to spread out a thin layer of soil on a tray (about 1/2 inch), water the soil, then sprinkle flax seeds on. I bet you already have flax seeds in your kitchen. In a week or so you will have some flax microgreens to harvest.

I read that and thought: oh, I don't have any trays. Then I got this flash of walking into McDonald's and "reappropriating" some of their trays for the project. Ha!
Okay, I'm just going to do it. Sprout the flax, I mean. I'll report back!

I enjoy sprouting too :D where on earth did you find lambsquarters? I've only been able to find the usual stuff, ie alfalfa, lentils, etc. I would also like to find a source for chia seed (organic only please).

Glad to see young people living beautiful healthy lives... enjoy!

Okay, I soaked my flax seeds last night, probably oversoaked them but I reckon they'll be okay. I got a tray and organic soil to sprinkle them on, plus I bought a spray bottle for this project. I'll report back. I've been wanting to get into microgreens for a couple of years and just couldn't take the first step, so this is exciting to at least be experimenting!:p

Hi all,

I am looking to start sprouting myself. Timely thread!

But, how do you 'harvest' your microgreens? If you are growing them on soil do you let them get so high and then clip them? Then what do you do with them? Use them like regular sprouts?

Thanks!

Stina

Yes, I'll just use scissors to cut them and then put them on my salad or in a green smoothie.

Thanks Stina!

How high do you let them grow? Inch? 2?

I'm just experimenting myself but I think we'll know with how they look. Takes about a week. Then they are cute little greens. Yeah, go with cute. When they're cute, eat 'em. Or go to www.sproutpeople.com for official instructions.

I'd love to try microgreens, but I'm 100% sure my cats would eat them before I had a chance! lol

I had to barricade my Aerogarden because one of my cats thought it was her personal bed/sun lamp/snacking station. She would sprawl very comfortably across the plants, reach up and nibble the occasional leaf, and generally look divinely blissful. I would have let her keep doing it actually if it hadn't been wrecking the plants.

that's darling! buy her her own!!

It's fascinating to watch the little flax seeds loose their shell, the tiny tails come out, then slowly reach down for the soil.

I'm putting the growing plate loosely in a plastic bag. Does anyone know if I should keep spraying it with water daily?
