View Full Version : Coconut Oil Solidifying in Smoothies?

Is this just what happens when you put coconut oil in your smoothies? I would love to keep doing this, but when I tried it the oil started solidifying into little drops and it made drinking the smoothie a bit rough.

I make my smoothies with frozen fruit and ice, sometimes. It makes sense that the oil would go solid again with the cold temperature. But I haven't seen anyone else mention this problem, so I was wondering if it was happening to anyone else! If so, what can I do about it to make it stay blended into my smoothie?

Thanks!

Same thing happened to me. Actually most of the time it just sticks to my Magic Bullet.

I stopped putting it in my smoothies for this reason. Unless it's really hot & humid and it remains liquid - then I'll use it. Curious to see if there are any remedies. Good luck.

Yep, me too. I've always been confused by this b/c I know some people put heaping TBS of it in their smoothies and the one time I did that, I was annoyed by all of the lumps of hard oil!

I could have asked, but I figured I'd just wait for someone else to do that. :D

As most people like their smoothies chilled, the coconut oil will not liquify. Remember that temps below about 70F will keep the oil solid.

Since coconut oil becomes liquid only above 78 degrees F (26C), it will solidify in smoothies with frozen content. If you make it at room temperature, it might work. My coconut oil is pretty much always solid, since 78 F would mean we are having a heatwave.:D

I hear of lots of people putting it in their smoothies but unless your making room temperature smoothies your going to have this problem. I prefer to make mine cooler than room temp and don't use it either.

If you want the coconut oil to blend smoothly, you need to emulsify it first with some warm water and lecithin and then add it to the smoothie.

That is correct about it being a liquid at 78 degrees. By mixing it with anything cold will cause it to solidify. It can easily be warmed to liquid by placing it in a bowl of warm water for a couple moments.

You might want to consider putting a couple tbsp on your salad or blending it into some tea - I found this usually works best with one of the Celestial Seasonings fruity/tropical flavors.

I also use CO in a very small amount on my face at night and to deep condition the ends of my hair. That stuff rocks!

Thank you everyone! Glad to know I wasn't the only one wondering this!

Suzy- Thanks for the tip on emulsifying it first. I'll try that!

Heh! That's so true! I remember calling my friends back at home when I was living in NY. They would complain when it hit 80!

I've been doing both, keeping it on the counter and sometimes in the fridge.

I use it for sweet treats. Since I don't like the taste of flax seed oil on my salads, I was pleasantly surprized to find I really like it in my green smoothies. Makes it nicely creamy.

Oh, no wait, I fibbed. I like coconut oil so much I just dip a spoon in it and eat it plain!
