Can't seem to find much info on this. I'm trying to increase my legumes.

After I remove a bag of store-bought peas from the freezer, and move them to the plain ole cold section, how long will they last?

And how do I know when they go bad?

And while I'm here - what's your favorite apple peeler brand? I currently using the Oxo brand I find at my local supermarket. They are nice and sharp for the first month. But I'm only getting about three months use before I have to toss/replace it. I assume there is no way to sharpen any of them? Doesn't someone need to design a peeler where you could just replace the blade - like a shaving razor? I use mine everyday - on things like apples, peaches, carrots, cucumbers, daikon, and removing bad spots on celery.

Steve (still in produce 101)

PS: today was a milestone for me. Today, my girlfriend asked **me** about produce at the store today - and I knew the answer to both. No one has EVER asked me about produce (yes I'm easily entertained).

I would think the peas would last about 2-3 days. And I hope you know, store bought frozen peas are not raw.

For the peelers, I have a couple of OXO Goodgrips. Have had them for several years. Have another one (not sure the brand) with a different kind of blade for delicate things.

I don't peel things very often. When I canned apples or needed a lot of peeled apples, I used one of those combo peeler/corer thingies. It was messy but it got the job done. When I peeled pears, I just used my hand peeler. And I peeled a LOT of pears!

Just curious why you would peel all those things? I never peel carrots or apples any more. Most of the vitamins are in the peel.

What! - oh no, what do they do to them?

They possibly blanch them before freezing. You'll know when the peas go bad as they get slimey or slimy or however you spell it.

All frozen vegetables are blanched (submerged in boiling water) prior to freezing. The same applies to some but not all fruits.

I wonder which fruits?

When I buy frozen fruit, I love the local huge bags that Reminglar Farms sells. You can find them most everywhere, and 10 bucks for 5 pounds of good berries or peaches is a fine deal, esp in the winter when I want a berry smoothie:p

So I've been finding as I look into this :(

I'm going to have to start sprouting legumes again.

I just loved peas on my salad. And when I found them at salad bars, I was also putting them on my raw salads - at least I used to.

It's not clear to me how much blanching destroys nutrients compared to actual cooking.
