Don't know to put this here or in the food section...what are you supposed to do with a plantain? Can you eat it raw, or do you have to cook it? I bought one today because I've never tried one, and the lady at the check out said that most orientals cook them and use them in rice. Also, how does it taste?

I've cooked plantains before, but never tried one raw. They are usually cooked like potatoes. When they are young, they are very starchy and bland tasting (like potatoes). When they mature, they are a bit sweeter, but still not near as sweet as bananas, which is what most people expect them to taste like.

Maybe they can be sliced REALLY thin and dehydrated like chips , in south america and I think the caribbean they usually fry them like chips -why not dehydrate

I thought I read somewhere you can eat plantains raw. You just want them to be super ripe. Lots of black spots on the peel!
Blessings.

Black spots actually equal more sweetness. I have never seen them eaten raw in the Hispanic community as well. I used to make a great "pudding" with plaintains, cinnamon and soy milk. I'd heat up the soy milk in a skillet, add mushy plaintains and cinnamon and keep stirring until it heated up and became pudding-like. I don't see why that couldn't be done by blending all the ingredients (almond milk or other nut milk used instead) and then heating it up in the dehydrator.

While away, both my Jamacian and Puerto Rican friends said they slice them ( the ripe ones), spray a little olive oil on them and sea salt and dehydrate until crisp and that they are very good.
Now so that you know - I can't move this, but it should be on the recipe side, but wanted to provide an answer before I forget. Y'all take care

Years ago I bought a couple of plantains because my husband was such a banana lover. The recipe said to batter and fry them. Of course, I thought they were sweet, so I sweetened the batter and then drizzled them with honey, with sprinkle of powdered sugar on top. I couldn't unerstand why he didn't like them until I took a taste...yuck !!! It definitely wasn't dessert material !
