Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to gear up to do the Sept 30 day raw challenge and I need some ideas.

I like to have a fruit smoothie for a mid-morning snack but I noticed that after a few hours, I start to feel sleepy and today I had a weak/shaky reaction, probably from the sugar load. So I'm looking to add something to break up the sweetness a little. I'm still trying to get into green smoothies but I'm not quite there yet. I add some fresh lemon juice which helps, but I'm thinking of adding just a pinch of greens (like 1/2 cup) so that the fruit flavor still dominates but isn't quite so sweet. Any ideas as to what greens are the least dominant for smoothies?

Also, I like to have a fruit and veggie salad for dinner but also notice that the fruit tends to dominate. I usually put a base fruit, like apple or pear and a little bit of a tropical fruit, like 1/2 cup pineapple or mango chunks or kiwi, fr a zip. I notice that celery works well because it's delicate and the crunch and green break up the sweetness. I've tried carrots but the sweetness of the veggie is a bit too much for this kind of a salad. So any ideas on what veggie would work well with this kind of fruit salad?

I know I'm not being real creative here, but I'm fresh out of ideas  !

I feel spinach is the best "light" greens for smoothies. Even romaine can taste more "earthy".

i prefer baby spinach in my smoothie. I put at least 2 huge handfuls in with a couple of bananas and other fruit. I can't really taste the spinach at all, but love the green color in my dark blue Kitchen Aid blender, lol. You need to be careful with combining vegetables and fruits in your salad. They should not be combined in a meal, as the vegetables (other than leafy greens) slow down the digestion process too much for the fruit. If the fruit is kept in the stomach too long, it starts to ferment which leads to inflammation in your body. As long as you stick to salad greens along with non-sweet fruits (tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado) in your salad, you can certainly throw in some mandarin-orange slices or some tropical bits. I also like to toss in some dried cranberries.

You will be shocked and how little you taste of the greens. Start with a little and work your way up to where you're comfortable.

Blessings,

Interesting... spinach was the first green that came to my mind for smoothies and I already have it down on my shopping list for tomorrow :D. I realize that fruits and veggie combos can be an issue but I'm not really into heavy duty food combining.

Yes, I agree on the baby spinach being the best for green smoothies. Good fruits to hide the green flavor are bananas, peaches, and pineapple. My favorite green smoothie is baby spinach and peaches a little water and about 4 cubes of ice. I dont really like them very cold.

Thanks 4 sharing your experience with becoming fatigued when you comsume fruits.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I did a search on food combining but I was unable to find much here. Does this site lend itself to discussing the issue.

Ex. 2day 4 my 1st meal, I ate fruit salad of warermelon with one small bannna, raw peanuts and a tablespoon of raw coconut oil and felt and was bloted after---and I am skinny. It was as if this combo did not agree with me or I ate too much.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on any of the above.

Thanks

If you want to learn more about food combining, look up "natural hygiene." A raw book discussing Natural Hygiene principles that I read this week is called "raw food detox diet." Warning, the author is more liberal with her raw foodism (she allows flesh and cheese, if that's what you do). So no one take me out to the shed on this one, ok? :)

A great salad to try:
avocado, apple, tomatoes, EVOO, salt & cayenne to taste.
