Hi,
I'm new to raw and most concerned about getting enough calcium especially for my two year old. I just finished a nutrition class that drilled the importance of drinking three cups of milk a day for the proper amount of calcium. Are there any sites I can read about the various sources of calcium? Thanks
Chandi

Try www.notmilk.com for some gruesome stuff. Milk actually gives you less calcium than where you start because it's sucking minerals out of your body. It's a bad scene.

Osteoporosis is statistically always higher in countries where the people drink a lot of milk. I can't believe how ridiculous it is that so many doctors in the west are still promoting milk. Very sad.

dont have all the info sources at hand right now ,
but ive been a vegan 15 years and from reading
over that time ive come to count on getting my
calcium mainly from dark greens . almonds are
next (love almond milk with banana/carob/berries/etc
blended into a shake) , then sesame seeds .

dark greens also provide my vita A .

Very true about the countries with higher consumption of milk having higher osteoporosis.. Sad. Like China or asian countries where they don't use milk, they don't have osteoporosis.

Ah -- of course! Thanks michigan roman for offering the other side of the coin!

My green smoothies are full of usable calcium, along with the other minerals that work with calcium to make my body ready to use it.

When I was 18 I started getting massive hives. I figured out it was due to milk. I cut out the milk and the hives vanished. It's been several years and I never buy milk. I have a handful of raw almonds a couple times a week to cover my calcium bases, but other than that, I'm great and I live a VERY active lifestyle with motorcycles, fencing, pilates and a sometimes labor intensive career field. My bones and teeth are nice and strong AND I NEVER get colds anymore like I used to with milk drinking!

All righty cstar... Are you ready? I've whipped out the reference book (Healing with Whole Foods) for something else and have come back to your question on calcium. Here is some info:

Get Vitamin D from sunshine. Vitamin D helps the body to use calcium. Do NOT wear sunscreen, and go out with at least 20% of skin exposed for at least 20 min. avg./day.
Eat grains, legumes, leafy greens, seaweeds.
Exercise regularly.
If eating grains/legumes, presoak before use because the phytic acid content binds the minerals.
Use oxalic acid foods sparingly (rhubarb, cranberries, plums, spinach, chard, beet greens).
If dairy is used, please email me privately, and I will share the details on that with you. :)
