Hi everyone,
I've been paying attention to how certain raw foods affect me lately and I've been surprised to learn that nuts cause me food cravings in a way that fruit doesn't. I've been having just fresh fruit for a mid-afternoon snack for days but yesterday, in an effort to up my calories a bit (I've been having only around 1165 a day  ) I had an ounce of nuts with a little raisins instead. About half an hour after that I had food cravings (not for junk food, just more dried fruit and nuts). I never had that with fresh fruit - that holds me until dinner time.
I've also noticed that eating fresh fruit and some crunchy veggie in the morning is more satisfying to me than having some nuts, even though the nuts have more protein.
What gives?

Maybe your body really wants nuts and dried fruits. On raw it can be good to listen to food cravings. Once your body has some of the nuts and dried fruits in it, it says "yeah, I like that, give me more!"
The other possibility is that your nuts and dried fruits could be not raw, and thus causing cravings. When in doubt, order your truly raw nuts and dried fruits from Alissa's store or from www.rawfromthefarm.com

Hmmm. my initial thought was that perhaps the fat in the nuts is the culprit. Fat can be soooo addictive. I can go wild also when I start eating nuts. :o

Hi,
Me too!!!!! That seems to be my big problem right now. Awhile ago, I found out I had candida, (through colonics) without any symptoms, so I was told to cut out all fruits. That was 4 months ago. Ever since I cut out fruits, I started eating nuts, and I just can't stop. I gained abount 15 lbs. and I'm not happy. I really need to cut out nuts again. I also don't feel well when I eat nuts, but it's not just a handful, I'm talking sometimes 2 - 3 lbs. in a day. I'm out of control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided to add fruits back to my diet cause I was feeling WONDERFUL and energenic when I was not eating nuts and eating some fruit. Starting tomorrow, I am back on my green smoothie fast with some fruit!! Wish me luck cause this is going on for months now.

Are you by chance eating almonds? They are no longer raw, but pasteurized. Could that be the problem?

Hi, I am eating almonds, but I only order from living nutz and they are not pasteurized. I also get raw almonds from spain which are not pasteurized either. Thank you for the idea though. No, I just think I have emotional issues that cause me to binge.

How you saw you had candida throguh a colonic?

Yes nuts makes me want more too.
Debbie I think that a juice/green smoothy fast would be a good thing too. Then stay with alkalising foods.
Acording to Doug Grahams book it is not fruit that is the reason for candida overgroth but to much fat in the diet. After working in a health food store and seeing peoples different atemps to eradicade candida I am about to agreen with him. I have never met anyone who cured their candida problem with cutting out all sugary foods (inc fruits) and fungi foods.
But getting the colon bacteria in balance does. To much acid forming foods couses inbalances so does fatty foods.
But im no expert on this, all this Is some I have read and from talking with naturpaths. But maby worth a try ?
I would stay of dried fruits thoug since they are concentratet sugars. But I think that fresh fruits are safe to eat as long as there is a balance with greens and alcalising foods, and a little fatty foods (nothing in exces).
And remember candida is no enemy, it is a natural bacteria who lives in our colon (and performs a really important function). When it is in overgroth it is because there is an inbalance in our way of life or diet (stress can cause it too). See it as a friend, a friendly reminder :)

Hi, They said I had candida cause they saw lots of tiny bubbles which indicates candida. She said there was lots of die off. I also went for a blood analysis test and they said I had some candida too.
Thank you for the info about candida. I agree with you at this point. However, I have been PIGGING OUT SO BADLY ON NUTS ALL DAY FOR 5 DAYS and I actually do have suddenly what feels like a yeast infection coming on. I know that whenever this happens, I cut out fats and it goes away. I continue to eat the fresh fruits though. I also agree with you about the dried fruits and have cut them out also.

Hi Inca,
OK, that's it. 100 years later, finally I figures out the solution!!!!!!! Let's cut out nuts FOREVER!!! I do so fine without them, but last night I had the biggest binge ever. I'm still sick this morning. I feel like I just ate a minute ago. Started off with cashews. I already know they are a problem for me, so what the heck??? Anyway, I do ok if I add a little pumpkin seeds or hemp seeds to smoothies or salads, so I am going to stick to this. NO MORE NUTS!! (I'm trying to convince myself) Easy to say right now, cause I feel so sick. lol. (Not really funny).
Ok, here is to the start of my new nutless life. :D

Hi
I'm sorry. Nuts are NOT bad IF................. you are a normal person. But I am not normal and cannot control myself when I start eating them. It's like that pringle commercial from years ago....Bet ya can't just have one???? Once I start, I eat ...Well....I can't even say, it's sooooo embarrassing. If you can just have a handful or two, then I'd say nuts are great. I love them, but once I overindulge, I pay the consequency dearly. My stomach is killing me right now and it will be until late tonight. (I've done this before).
Anyway, sorry, didn't mean to scare you about nuts.

Hi Debbie! I feel your pain and I hope your feeling better now.:) Those nuts are evil I tell you!! eeeeeeeeeeevil!!! well not really, just for us crazies who can't seem to handle them.:D Oddly enough, I don't have a problem with other nuts such as cashews or walnuts, only almonds. Well I'm going to stay off almonds for a while and see what happens. Good luck on your nutless life Debbie!
HolyGuacamole, Don't worry about it!! but before you go and buy huge amounts of nuts, maybe experiment with small amounts and see how you react to them...In the mean time I'm going to start a nutaholics anonymous club or something.:D
So... my thoughts on nuts vs. fruit...
In the US, I couldn't just go get almonds anywhere, it had to be special ordered and in bulk for it to be affordable and not pasteurized, all that jazz. Since I arrived in Hungary, I tried a few different packaged, unpasteurized almonds, and they did not taste fresh or good or SOMEthing.
I finally found some almonds that were still in the shell. These taste as fresh and wonderful as the ones I ordered from www.almonds-from-california.com... but this means I have to open the almonds' shells by hand every time I eat some.
This got me to thinking -- nuts were NOT meant to be eaten in large quantities! If they were, it would not be so difficult to get them out of the shell. Apples and other fruits are so EASY to get to, just pull them off the tree and eat.
How many of you all are shelling your nuts? If you are finding that you have an addiction, my suggestion would be:
1/Buy nuts that you have to shell.
and
2/Conscious eating = ONLY eat when you can focus on only eating (i.e. not while in front of the computer or talking or walking or reading. JUST eating).
This will bring you closer to what nature intended, and you will be more likely to listen to what your body is telling you and to move beyond the emotions telling you to eat for any reason other than hunger.
Great advice, Eva. I had to give up nuts because they give me a reaction and I cannot control myself when I eat them.

"Hi, my name is Liz, and I'm a nutaholic!"
I'm thankful for this post! I thought I was the only one who couldn't stop eating nuts once I start. It's terrible! I've been making nut mixes with almonds, walnuts and pecans and throwing in some raisins and salt and forget about it. I keep making myself sick. I say I'm going to stop buying them and next thing I know my car is driving itself to the store to get more nuts! UGH!
I must stop eating nuts... i must stop eating nuts... i must stop eating nuts...

i usually cant eat them by themselves either or i just go crazy. so instead i just incorporate a controlled amount into something else like a tbsp of nut butter in a smoothie, a serving of nuts in a salad, etc. the worst is making nut/dried fruit mixes because i just go crazy. that dry high fat/sugar combo is so addicting and doesnt make me feel good. or eating nut butter by the spoon ful, a no no!

Hi Lizzy,
That's exactly how I feel. Well, really, this is it. (Again, trying to convince myself). I STILL feel nauseas. It is 11:31 pm. I did eat at 7:00 tonight. I couldn't even drink water all day, I was so sick. Really, what is wrong with me, but yet, through the nauseasness, I managed to eat???????? Tomorrow will be a better day!!!!!!! NUTS ARE SOOOOO ADDICTIVE!!! I'm never buying them again.

Good luck, Debbie!
Isn't it silly that we're so disciplined eating raw food - we can walk past cake and cookies and french fries... but not a jar of almonds!
Let's just keep reminding ourselves, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time!
I'm going to (once again) plan to just drink water or juice or something else fillng when the nuts call my name -- and try to remind myself how yucky I feel and how terribly I sleep when I gorge on nuts.
and then... just step away from the nuts!

Nuts are also a huge problem this way- i can't seem to stop eating them.
Now, wouldn't you guys agree it's different with SOAKED nuts? i don't feel like eating all of them at once.. they're not as addictively appealing.. Perhaps it's because all nuts reach us rather "dehydrated" and they're much more moist naturally?
also the shells.. you definitely wouldn't eat a pound of nuts if you'd have to shell them :)
by the way.. CASHEWS- apart from being not raw mostly and not even a nut.. they're also contributing to candida according to Cousen's .. i don't remember what's the deal with them- i think they're rather mucous forming? ah can't remember

Hehehe... didn't realize I was starting a "Nutaholics Anonymous" thread with my post :D...
The irony is that I actually don't have a problem with nuts usually. I can pour out an ounce, much on it and enjoy it, without going back for seconds and sometimes I don't even finish the ounce because it becomes too much for me (a truely amazing feat, since nothing else seems to work for me that way when it comes to food..) The one exception would be peanut butter, which I no longer eat since going high raw. Even raw almond butter doesn't give me that problem, though.
I did some rechecking and conscious eating and I find that when I combine the nuts with the dried fruit (raw or not), I seem to have the problem of wanting more. So that sort of solves the problem for me - I just can't eat nuts and fruit together. Duh... should have realized that much sooner...
But I do make a raw fudge with raw nut butter, date, and carob and for some reason it doesn't cause cravings, even with the date and nuts together. Have just been doing some experimenting to try and see if the fudge will work with homemade nut butter since I'm trying to save a little money and jarred raw almond butter is so expensive. And the fudge is amazing with homemade nut butter - way tastier than the jarred stuff :p.

Fruits, nuts, veggies...if it's raw... I'm in love! :p I just don't enjoy avocado's enough to get all the fat I need during the day and without nuts I would feel hungry...endlessly.
This is why I totally feel everyone is different. What makes one person upset to their tummy...makes another feel satisfied and full.
Gotta love raw!:D

You dont need luck. Luck wont help you. The only person that can get you out of this pain is you. I wrote about how in a few posts now. Read it if you like. I wish you no luck. Because you dont need it ;)

Lizzy,
That's so funny. I say that all the time. I feel like I have NO willpower and I keep thinking "what's wrong with me, why can't I just be normal. I don't see other people pigging out like this. Then I actually think of what other people are actually eating. I must have some willpower, I mean I'm not eating sugar, starch, wheat, soy, additives, preservatives, cooked food, pizza, bagels, cheeseburgers, McDonald's, tea, coffee etc. etc. hahahahaha.
I DO have willpower. Put's things in perspective. I just have a "little" problem with nuts. I surely can beat that if I beat all the other foods.
MONGODELIGHT,
Thank you for no good luck. hehe. You're right. I am in control of this. I will try harder. It's all up to me. I CAN DO THIS . I would love to read your posts, where are they?

yeah putting it in perspective is important. i mean if you can give up ALL of those other things most people cant seem to live without, what are some nuts? :)
