View Full Version : Excalibur Dehydrators--are they loud?

I know a high percentage of you have these dehydrators and I just need to ask, because I was reading the few reviews on Amazon, but a couple of the people said the 9 trays are really loud, is this true? I mean, a couple of them needed to put the dehydrator on their porch or get rid of it, but then another guy said it was quieter than his dishwasher, so which one is it! Sometimes I freakin hate reviews because they are all over the place! Also, do they get hot or do they heat up your room with the warm air?

It's not going to deter me at all, but I was just curious.

I would say that mine is comparable to the fan above my stove.

Mine is pretty loud and is banished to the garage. I love it though!

I too have the nine-tray and I think it is definitely loud.

But, with dehydrating you can put your dehydrator wherever you want in the house, in a closet, in the garage, whatever, because you stick stuff in it and wait overnight, so it's not like you need to be right beside it or anything checking on food constantly.

But that being said, it is a great dehydrator. It's huge, so you can make big batches of food and I use it constantly. Overall, it's worth the money, and I would buy it again.

I have 9 tray going right now and yes loud as I dehydrate peaches and making banana peach leather as well without lemon. Trial here.

The noise drives my husband crazy.

The noise drives my husband crazy.

Ditto on that.

Mine rattles AND is noisy unless there's something holding weight on top. Fine by me; it's where I put my un-cook books.

Yeah, mine is about the same as my range fan. My hubby and I love the sound, it drowns out our tinnitus!

WOW! I don't think mine is loud at all and I live in the boonies where it's really quiet.

I have a five tray, I don't think it is particularly loud, but I don't like the sound of it at night. Keep in mind that I am super sensitive to sounds at night. I put mine on the patio, more for the heat issue than the noise. I figure if it is 108 outside, why not let the natural temp help with the dehydrating and I dont pour extra hot air in my house that way. In fact, I think I will leave it out there the rest of the summer, so I am motivated to use it more often.

Hmm, very interesting. I think, after reading some of your replies, that I may actually put mine in the garage because of both the possibility of noise ( I too am noise sensitive at night) and also the heat and/or moisture. We have a hard enough time keeping our house cool in the summer. We'll see though, but our garage is like right next to the kitchen, so it really isn't out of the way at all for me. That way, if it turns out that it is also just a large item that would take up too much space on my counter, it will work out better in the garage. I plan on getting the 9 tray and I see that that one does have a larger fan than the others.

Anyway, thanks for the replies!

Side note - I was SHOCKED when I got mine - IT IS HUGE ... way bigger than my microwave (yes, I still have one in the house). So, it takes up a SIGNIFICANT amount of counter space. If you set it on top of you stove it would pretty much take up almost all of the space. I am still glad I got mine and my hubby is very noise sensitive so mine lives in my laundry room.

Heather

I too was concerned about the noise so I got the 5 tray instead of the 9. It's somewhat noisy but it's not horrible and you can't really hear it in other rooms. My only complaint is that it does heat up your kitchen. I may move mine to the garage just while running it during the warmer months. Winter time would be no problem. The 5 tray provides plenty of room for my needs.

Yeah, I've also been going around between the 4 tray, 5 tray and 9 tray, but I saw a couple of posts here where people were very glad they got the 9 tray. I have no idea how much I will use it at this point, but I'm sure if I get to experimenting, I will end up using it quite a bit. I figured if I'm going to spend the money on a dehydrator, I may as well get the 9 tray.

I saw Alissa's dehydrator on her DVD and I'm pretty sure it was a 9 tray and it didn't look that large. It looked to be as big as one of the larger microwaves, but anyway, we'll see. I still think the garage will be a good place for mine, since I am still stuck on asthetics in my kitchen.....I'm already crowding things up with a honkin Vitamix and the FP is on its way too, and that will still be on the counter as well.

I personally LOVE the 9 tray because when I dehydrate foods that take up a lot of space, like kale chips (until they dry out), I need to remove some of the trays and I'm only one person!!!

Mine doesn't bother me a bit, of course there's alot of coming and going at my house. I keep mine in my pantry.
