I just realized the Carob we have been eating is roasted.
Just wondering if anyone has tried the Raw Carob. Is there such a thing?
And if it's worth it to get some.
I cannot have cacao because it gives me a headache and I really wanna try the chocolate turtles and have chocolate ice cream again.

It's good Zella. Our local Chaco Canyon makes a pie with carob.
go to Raw Vegan Source- they are in Redmond- you can access them online and call for an appoinment. They carry raw carob- its cheap too. Plus they are super nice people!
Alissa should carry it as well.
I like cacao better but I often mix them half n half, like for brownies.

oh, awesome idea. I will contact them today. And I'm gonna have to get me some of that pie too. :p
Alissa even has it on special right now. 2 pounds for 10 bucks. Cool.

I voted no. I don't like it. Has a weird taste to me. I LOVE chocolate though. So I may be a bit biased.;)
I get mine from Alissa. I do like it. Its not exactly like chocolate but it is good. I like it in almond milk. I also like it in my chai milk. Im not a huge chocolate fan so it is fine for me as I always liked things with just a touch of chocoate flavor. Its not like cocoa at all.

 blech!!
I can't stand the smell...but the taste is pretty similar to cacao. I ate a whole container of "raweos" before realizing they were made with carob only !

That's how I felt about the roasted carob..I thought it was yukky. But after not being able to have chocolate for a year...I decided to try it again. It was good..but I had to find the right balance of salt and sweetner (honey, agave or dates). I am wondering if it's much different with the raw carob.

Same here. I don't get the point of eating carob when one can have raw cacao which is chock full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.:)

it gives me headaches...so I have no choice. I am sure the people who can tolerate cacao are going to vote for it hands down. This is not a comparsion between the two...because I just cannot have cacao. Ok so, stop talking about it people..you are making me jealous. hehehe

awww I'm sorry Zella, I forgot the fact that some people can't handle the stuff at all. It's weird how some can have tons of it with no problems and others feel ill at the thought of it, anyway didn't mean to make u feel bad Zella. *hugs*

hehe..It's ok. It's not as bad as having to watch my non-raw husband eat cake and ice cream in front of me. uGG.

I don't like it. It think I expect it to taste like chocolate, and when it doesn't, it turns me off. Maybe I just need to change my thinking, ha!

I am a chocoholic and I do like carob powder. I have found the raw carob powder to taste more like chocolate than the roasted I had been using. Alissa's fudge balls taste very chocolatey to me. I also use the carob in banana date shakes.
I used roasted carob (before 100% raw) instead of raw cocoa powder for "Raw Food Real World" macaroons and they were way to rich for me (something that is very hard to be). I prefer those with raw cocoa.

I love the gold mine brand...yumm.
sometimes cacao gives me headaches. going to try soaking the beans first, this is supposed to help.
i hear cacao PLUS carob in any dessert is to die for though! double delicious! cant wait to try it (though i may have tasted it at raw restaurants without knowing it)...

Hey Zella...was in a hurry earlier but *meant to* add something so it didn't seem i was rubbing cacao and carob in your face....I feel your pain about the headaches anyway.....literally! I recently attended a Chocolate Brunch with David Wolfe and had a headache all day at that thing, though I would do it all over again 10,000 times :D
that's what i meant to mention. I've been reading the book Naked Chocolate by David Wolfe and Shazzie and it talks about people who get headaches and what to do about it. one suggestion is to have a glass of water with 2 Tablespoons of MSM (methyl-sulphonyl-methane) powdered crystals. apparently this is a great superfood that enhances youth and helps absorbs minerals generally so many raw foodists are using it nowadays anyway.
who knows...maybe it's worth a shot? if it works, you can say "in your face" to your hubby while he's eating cake and icecream and you your super nutritive cocoa treats.
btw the book has amazing recipes that you can easily substitute with carob....i'll let you know if soaking the beans helps the headache deal too, or you may want to try it yourself.
lots of chocolate wishes,
pitaya : )

I voted no. Don't like the flavor of carob.
Pitaya, I've been meaning to read Naked Chocolate. One thing I don't get is why would you need to take a supplement in order to eat a food? Did they expand on this further? It seems to defeat the purpose of eating raw. If you're sensitive to a certain food, I think it means your body is saying "excuse me, not this one - it doesn't work for us and we don't need it". hahaha. But maybe I'm looking at it from the wrong lens.

Interesting question :D. When I first started getting into raw and frequented this board and others (about a year ago), I noticed that a lot of people were discussing the benefits of raw carob as a chocolate substitute in the cooked world. I got off of raw for a while and didn't frequent the boards as much and when I came back, everyone was talking about raw cacao and I noticed that raw cacao seems to have replaced carob in discussions.
Personally, I like raw carob and use it often in a raw fudge. I bought the 2 lb bag Alissa's store is offering (great price - I think it's still on offer) and it satisfies the chocolate craving. I haven't moved to raw cacao mainly because it has caffeine in it and I'm trying to avoid starting with that again.

I love the taste of raw carob but I don't like it toasted. I am also I chocolate lover (I have never had raw though, too expensive for me at the moment).
