View Full Version : Need help - sandwich potluck?!?!?!
I'm going to a housewarming party at my best friend's house on Saturday, and it's a non-raw sandwich potluck. We're supposed to bring pre-made sandwiches and/or sandwich ingredients. I'm very new to raw, and have no idea what could pass for a sandwich. Any ideas? All I can think of is lettuce wraps, but what to put inside the lettuce leaves? I have a food process, but no dehydrator. Help! :)

For the lettuce wrap--some avocado, tomato, sweet peppers, onion...yum!
I think that the fresh wraps are a great idea, as they will definitely stand out from what everyone else will bring.

use mung bean sprouts ,wrapped with cilantro ,mint ,maybe a little-tiny bit of jalepino and juliano's sweet and sour sauce in a lettuce leaf -mmmm , as vietnamese spring rolls!

Easy...ask if you could bring some fruit to go along with the s'wiches. You probably don't want to spend a lot of time on something that others might think was a bit weird and then you have the whole plate left to take home...which probably wouldn't be too tasty after having been left out all day. I'd opt for the fruit....maybe a nice, hollowed out watermelon with a mix of fruit inside....everyone loves that.

These are SO good, and I think non-raw people will like them. It's from Juliano's recipe book.
Black Olive and Cream Dim Sum
2 c. avocado
1/2 c. black olives, pitted
1 1/2 tsp. celtic sea salt
1/3 c. fresh cilantro
1/4 c. fresh lemon juice
2 tsp. cumin
1/2 c. onion
2 tsp. garlic
2 tsp. ginger
1 1/2 tsp. minced jalapeno
8 red lettuce leaves
In bowl, combine avocado, olives, salt, cilantro, lemon juice, cumin, onion, garlic, ginger, and jalapeno. Spoon the mixture evenly into lettuce leaves.

I totally agree with CADreamer. And ... if it's your best friend, she'd understand and be supportive, wouldn't she?
Thanks for the advice and great recipe ideas, everyone! My friend would definitely understand if I brought fruit instead of sandwiches, but I really like the idea of being able to "participate" in the potluck to say, hey, a raw lifestyle is not weird -- I can even make raw "sandwiches" that my friends will love. This affirmation is not for my friends, but for me, because I'm struggling to stay raw (mostly in social situations like this one). I don't really feel the need to impress other people or make them feel comfortable, but I DO want to feel comfortable myself.
I think I will make a couple types of fillings (per your suggestions) and bring lots of crunchy lettuce leaves. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the great ideas. :)
