Why it's bad for us, how can we tell the difference between irradiated and non-irradiated stuff, can we the the non-radiated stuff still or do we have to grown it in our basement all year round.

And on a similar note, how much of our other fruits and vegetables do they already irradiate? I just found out about the pasturization of raw almonds, and the packaging isn't even labeled accordingly.

(I'm sure there's a conspiracy theory brewing about this too!)

Spend the extra money and get at least your spinach and lettuce organically grown. According to the Organic Standards, organically grown is not allowed to be irradiated.

I buy my supplies from www.growgreens.com . I grow sunflower greens, wheatgrass, arugula, pea sprouts, and baby lettuce.
I grow the greens on a tray in a biodegradeable medium on a sunny windowsill or under lights. To nourish the greens, I use the thalassa mix, which is basically diluted sea water with added minerals. The supplies and seeds are cheap, and you can grow an abundant amount of greens all year round.

I agree that this is serious. My suggestion is that if you have a forum to get this info out into the public, that you do so. The media will be focusing on the angle of "it protects us from e. coli". The other side of this situation has to get out as well.

Since I have avenues to get this info out (including being the editor for 2 Dallas blogs for major sites which receive several thousand visitors per day), I will be posting this info everywhere I can.

Post replies to news stories on the big sites like CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, etc; if your local broadcast or print media is covering this story, email the reporter to let them know the other side. VERY IMPORTATNT: When dealing with the media, keep it short, sweet and to the point.

I think mass phone calls to grocers may do more good then calling the FDA. We are the grocers bread and butter.

Growing your own is good but not all people.... myself included have the resources for that. Unless I can grow it in my basement and not everybody has a basement. Plus my husband will refuse to take care of the garden while I'm away.

Irradating foods is suppose to reduce the nutritional value same as cooking - 1/2 gone. Then there's the nutritional value lost with shipping. Shouldn't be much left after this stuff gets cooked.

These foods are suppose to have a flower label somewhere to show it has been irradated. It's the law but no one is enforcing it. The people in the food chain are suppose to pass the word down to eventually get to the grocery store. With no one enforcing it and no one that would buy it, you can bet the companies in the food chain are not going to pass the word.

Why is there no discussion? The gov't keeps trying to get commerical use of radiation as much as possible. Lots of hot waste comes out of nuclear power plants and it has to go somewhere. Nice to have someone buy it. Another reason - the only entities that count with our gov't are corporations. They need to make profits and they need to cut corners as much as possible. So by irridating the food, they don't have to worry about safety precautions or lawsuits.

Phone calls, emails, snail mail etc. to your representatives in Washington DO make a difference. Specially, if you keep on top of it and tell all your family and friends to do the same. In the last few years, quite a few bills didn't pass or were changed drastically, because of people's phone calls and emails. Your grocery store manager does not have much pull with his corporate bosses, but you, as in "We the People" have all the power you want to take for yourself.

You could also try Costa Rica. A friend of mine just returned a couple days ago from a yoga retreat there and went into great detail about the organic farming measures the growers are using there. Very inspiring to hear.
