View Full Version : Is it JUST me

I have been raw since the 11th of July, and the last week or so have attempted to do soley 80/10/10 and omg....I have never eaten so much food in my life and been so hungry at the same time, even waking up hungry in the night, and I mean hungry!! I haven't been able to wear my contacts because my eyes are so dry, my skin is looking dry, I'm pale, sallow, tired...did I say hungry.

I cannot get satisfied, even when I'm stuffed, there is a hunger inside of me, I know hard to believe, and I'm not kidding. I can't do it anymore.

I had good results with just raw foods and nuts/oils. I know I am a rapid oxidizer also called a protein type, and I don't think that diet is for me. I know this isn't an 80/10/10 board but I've seen a lot of comments on here re: 80/10/10 and I'm just curious if anyone else had this experience.

I was eating TONS of fruit, and very little greens compared to what I was doing before on just raw. I was eating ALL the time, my whole day was fixed around trying to satisfy my hunger. I could barely carry the trash out each day because it was so heavy from all of my fruit and veggie peelings. And I felt deprived, and did I mention HUNGRY. I would go from sickening stuffed to starving and all the while not feeling satisfied.

This morning I got up and headed straight for the olive oil, made a salad with avocado, romaine, olive oil and what a relief. I know you can have some overt fat on that diet, but I was not getting enough....for me. And I'm not sure it was enough protein for me either, my hair was starting to look lifeless. Would be interested in hearing if anyone else went through this, I hate to be negative about it, was it just me.

I know a week isn't a long time, but I couldn't go on starving anymore.

Hi linda7276,

There may have been posts mentioning 811 on here before, but they don't usually stay or don't delve too deeply into that subject matter.

I know you're not gonna like this and hopefully you won't take it personal but I'm sorry, IF your desire is to try and make 811 work for you and figure it all out, then this is just not the place to get off into this. Perhaps visiting a 811-specific board for this question would be best because there you would have folks who are experienced in that way of eating and it won't be going against the board's theme.

Hi Linda, I experienced something similar when I tried 811 for a month and it was not detox. Simply my body likes and enjoys a higher percentage of greens and not too much fruit. And I love my nuts, seeds and occasional gourmet meal too. :D I'm more into "intuitive eating" these days and not following any set guidelines. I think you were wise to listen to your body and how you were feeling. Hope you've recovered your energy.

I know I'm fairly new here and I certainly don't want to step on anybody's toes. but I read the post as telling us that Alissa Cohen's way works so much better for a "protein type" than the much stricter and exclusive way of eating on the 80-10-10 diet. For those of us who have a metabolic type that strives on more protein, it is wonderful to have all those higher fat and protein foods available that Alissa uses in many of her great recipes. I have read other threads here where the posters talked about giving up on raw food, because they are always hungry. I think it's important for those people to read a first hand testimonial from someone on the board who went through the same thing and realized that fat and protein are not the enemy in a raw diet. Just my 3 cents worth, accounting for inflation...

I don't know what 80-10-10 is, but I can say that when it comes to diet, there is no "one size fits all". A restrictive eating program may be right for some, but not for all. I like Alissa's approach which is to eat what you want and when you want as long it is raw and vegan. Basically listen to your body!.

Rawkinlocs: No it is not my intent to do that, I just wanted to hear from other folks who've tried it to see if they had the same experience. I tried it, it's not for me, I am a very thin person, have always had a ravenous appetite, and it just didn't work for me...period. From day one I felt deprived and like something was missing but I wanted to give it a chance, and one week was all I could do. I went back to full raw, and already today I am not starving anymore. I know from listening to my body, that as Rawheaven says "it was NOT detox" but a scream for nourishment. I'm sorry if I broke any rules, just wanted to hear if others had the same experience on it.

RawHeaven: Thanks, I agree totally, I am also "intuitive" but there is so much "it's detox" when anyone brings up a problem, that I wanted to give it a fair chance, but this was NOT detox, and I'm just glad that I didn't wait another day. I have never felt hunger like that in my life.

EmmaT: Thanks, yes that's exactly what I was saying!! I am definitely a protein type and need those nuts and some extra fat. Now that I'm aware I might try not to overdue the fats, but 10% is not enough for me. I actually considered getting off of raw all together too, but I realized that I felt fine when I included the nuts and oils, so I'm sticking!!

annavon: 80/10/10 is a diet based on consuming 80% of your calories from carbs, 10% from protein, and 10% from fat. The idea is to consume mostly sweet fruits and some romaine, etc., salads at dinner. It's too strict for me. I agree we are all different, and "one size doesn't fit all". Thanks

80/10/10 very rarely works and it seems that for those that it does long-term, they are very athletic. I think the healthier 80/10/10 should be instead 80% greens 10% each other the others. Or a little higher percentage of the others. But definitely everyone is different. Good that you're listening to your body for what you need.

The good thing is that on Alissa's idea of doing whatever works, as long as it's raw... if your body is meant to follow a certain eating plan (more fat, less fat, etc.), it's what you will crave. I say no need to obsess over someone else's idea about the perfect way to do raw. :)

I don't have time to do the math. All raw works the best for me. Sometimes I feel like some fat..sometimes I don't. I go with what my body tells me. When I started this way of eating I decided it was not going to be like all the other diets I tried. I was not going to starve or deprive myself. I am much happier this way and don't obsess over food anymore. If my body wants to do something like that 811 thing..then it will tell me.

Eva - I know because of the time difference it's already Thursday for you -- but in Texas it's still Wednesday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!

I LOVE 811. I don't mean to encourage it here as I know the rules; just stating that it has worked for me very well. In the beginning it was rough, but I stuck with it and now it's my preferred way of eating raw. My energy is insane. I was raw for 6 months before I started it. I'm now almost 9 months raw. People very new to raw don't fare very well on it. It takes time to transition to that; I am still in that process myself. If you feel deprived, your body simply wasn't ready for it.

Alissa's approach to eating raw is fun and carefree; that's why it's great for transitioning into the raw lifestyle. I personally just like fruit, plain and simple. :-)

Moth - I think you are right, eventually you are so into the simple part of eating raw that everything more is overdoing it. I know I will eventually be mostly a fruitarian, but I think I will always need my daily dose of sunflower seeds and flax seeds, along with plenty of avocado, which as luck would have it is also a fruit! I do love the simple life.

i just skimmed the replies so forgive me if this has already been said... but it sounds like it just wasn't working for you. doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you or with 80-10-10 - every Body is different. listen to yours :)

Thanks all, I appreciate your responses!! :D

Personally I think raw is raw whether it's 80/10/10 or 20/20/60 or 50/30/20 or.....and anything is better than the processed food we came off of. And if you're doing something wrong I guess your body will let you know about it!

Blessings to all...:)

I personally like someone's comments on another raw food site - you should spend 10% of your time thinking about food, 10% actually preparing your food and 80% doing what you love.
