With the S blade it works very similar to a blender but is made for more solid ingredients and can be used to chop things by pulsing, the more often you pulse, the finer it chops, or let it run continuously to blend.

The discs essentially turn it into a high speed electric mandoline/grater for slicing, grating, shredding, etc. I got rid of my mandoline when I got my food processor and a few extra discs.

You can buy them from most stores that sell food processors or on ebay. I like the ultra thin slicing discs to make chips in a fraction of a second, the medium slicing disc to slice tomatoes for dehydrating in a fraction of a second, the 2x2 julienne disc which essentially makes spaghetti out of zucchini/sweet potatoes/etc. There are also shredding discs which are like a cheese grater but one of those normally comes with the machine as well as a medium slicing disc.
