i know im doing it the easy way b/c i dont have a dehydrator yet...so i eat pate's in lettuce wraps and hummus and salads with dressing, and maaajor green smoothies. but i swear, im SOOOO friggin hungry all the time..i eat myself outta house and home and then i have to go grocery shopping again and frankly, i dont have that money in my wallet  so tell me, i need raw foods that are really gonna fill me up or a smoothie recipe that involves little ingredients that i can get more bulk in. hmm..any opinions and advice are welcomed
This is the recipe I gave my not raw super hungry sister
2 T raw cacao powder
1 C ice water or coconut water
1 ripe banana
4 dates
3 handfuls ice
2 T chia seeds
Process in blender/Vitamix--shouldn't be too expensive

i agree... chia seeds (http://www.rawveganbooks.com/product_info.php?ref=199&products_id=1001333&affiliate_banner_id=1) are very filling and as long as you soak them first... very hydrating as well! try adding them to you daily smoothie.

Chop and apple and top with ground walnuts and a drizzle of coconut oil and honey ... mmmmm, and filling.
Also, how large are your green smoothies? This morning for the first time I made a 1/2 gal. of green smoothie with 4 bananas (frozen), 2 large handfuls of pineapple, almost 1/2 lb. of baby spinach and 4 cups of water. I drank it all day and didn't feel hungry at all today.

I'm the same way. Humongous appetite. Can't find anything to fill me up. I make 2 smoothies a day w/avocados. I eat big salads sometimes. That's even getting to a point to where it doesn't last long. Snacking on nuts does help some. I can pack myself and an hour later I'm hungry. Sometimes it's aggravating. The cravings I know come from past eating habits and past memories of food. Withdrawals. But lately my stomach just growls. Maybe I burn it off:rolleyes:

ROFLMAO!:D Sorry Lucy, but as someone who's had a weak bladder since she WAS a kid (and yes, having kids didn't help either), that one just struck me as SUPER funny!:D
I'm with you on the super hungry thing. I get that way too. I find it tapers off from time to time though. My kids are always hungry too. I call them my little raw food vultures!
For us there are a couple of things:
Green smoothies, I find them to be very filling, especially with lots of bananas.
Banana split chocolate shakes is another one.
Chocolate or superfood shakes with almond mylk. I find those fill me up for HOURS, so long as I drink at least 12-16 oz.
And there's some kind of spread my son makes that DELISH that we have in romaine, and I'm full with those after two or three of them for the night and into the next day. Now, if I could just get him to give up the recipe!

How long ago did you change your way of eating? Did you eat lots of SAD foods before? Hunger is one of those things. We are so used to stuffing ourselves, that we think the least bit of a hungry feeling should be answered immediately by stuffing more food into our mouths. Fact is, the reason for eating is to nourish a few trillion cells in our bodies, not to fill our stomach. Have you tried sipping a little water whenever you get that familiar feeling? We are so used to instant gratification, we don't even know that we won't fall off our shoes if we don't immediately eat. Wait a while before you eat something, very often the hunger feeling will go away. I'm always happy when I'm hungry, because it reminds me that I'm doing well, that I'm not eating for emotional reasons, but only for nourishment. Maybe it is your emotions telling you: "what about us? There is a hole here, feed it, fill it up." I'm sitting here with a growling stomach, as I have not had anything besides lemon water yet this morning (almost 9 am PST). I will give my stomach something once I'm good and ready. We will not die of starvation if we make our stomachs wait an additional hour or two (or even a day), that's physically impossible. Get your stomach used to waiting. Make friends with your hunger.

How long have you been raw? I was the same way when I first went raw - always hungry - could not stop eating. :o That always hungry feeling did finally go away though. I now find that smoothies really help me stay filled up for hours. I drink at least one 32 oz. smoothie every morning and I generally don't get hungry until mid to late afternoon. I sip the smoothie though - I don't gulp it down. It usually takes me about 1 1/2 hrs. to sip the entire thing - then I am full. Some mornings I can't even finish the entire smoothie so I refrigerate it and have the rest in the afternoon. If I get hungry in between I eat some fruit or a small hand full of nuts mixed with a small portion of raw cookie. I usually freeze this in little plastic bags so I can just grab them and throw them in my purse on my way out the door. Plus freezing keeps the nuts and cookie fresh longer. Good luck!!:D

Oh yeah - I forgot. Prettyenough...when I first went raw the hunger seemed to just come from nowhere and it was fierce - not like when I would get hungry from eating SAD food. When this first happened I got really scared because that kind of hunger felt strange to me. I called my friend who introduced me to raw and she advised that I never, ever, ever leave my house without carrying food with me. The hunger would come so fast that I would start feeling physically ill. I would go from feeling fine to extremely hungry in nothing flat. I followed my friend's advice and would just grab a piece of fruit or veggies or nuts, whatever - as long as it was raw and I would take a few bites or whatever and then I would be fine. I don't know about other people but I don't like feeling hungry and with raw I don't have to because I am eating foods that are good for my body. I eat whatever I want as long as it is raw and I am fine.:p

i recommend bananas &
nut pates, but you're already eating them :)
green smoothies
fruit smoothies
drinking 2 tbs of ACV 2-3 x per day may quell your appetite, balance your HCL levels at the same time
just a thought...you could also have a parasite, have you considered doing a parasite cleanse? Or have you done any cleansing above being raw?
and it could just be that you need the nutrients all of that food is providing right now, especially if you're eating a lot of greens. your body will find it's balance.
best wishes.

I'm very, very new into this myself and have a "fear" of being hungry. Something I have to work with one day at a time. One thing that I finds that really fills me is a banana or two cut up with raw almond butter and a little agave nectar poured on top. Really holds me for a good while. I don't know if there's any Trader Joes near you but they have raw almond butter for around $5 per jar.

I am having the same hunger issues. Even if I am eating all day long, I am still hungry. I think its that 'heavy' feeling that cooked foods give us that our stomachs are remembering, since fruits and veggies are assimilated much more quickly than the 'stick to yer bones' meat and potatoes I was used to eating. I also think that when you eat less calories your body ups the cravings because it wants to maintain your weight.. some sort of survival mechanism from a long time ago when there weren't MickyD's all over town.
Blessings to you.

the 2nd week i was raw, i slipped and ate some take out. i felt soooooo gross and almost sick to my stomach cuz of it. and i also tried eating some spaghetti, not raw..and it gave me that nasty full feeling. when i get full on raw, which is usually just from green smoothies, i dont feel gross full with my belly sticking out...i feel contently full and STILL energized. in my smoothie i put 2 frozen bananas, 3 oranges, juiced, water, ice, sometimes nuts, a handful of another fruit, usually strawberries, and every once in a while ill add cinnamon. and i fill a really big plastic mug that has a straw in it that i got from the hospital a while back. i make sure its really thick cuz then i can chew it which for some reason helps me get fuller faster instead of gulping it down. i think i could do with more recipes for pates and things that go in wraps, etc. does anyone have any they can throw out therE? the ones ive tried are ok but nothing exciting to eat.

You know why this is happening? Because your body is used to eating SAD/CRAP foods, which are empty foods. Now that it is getting healthy, living foods, it is still in that mode, thinking these foods are empty. Give it some time. Your body (once you keep feeding it living, whole foods), will realize WOW! This stuff is good and you will not keep on being hungry. Plus these living foods are very cleansing. Your body is getting rid of toxins.
Also - are you drinking enough water? Sometimes when one thinks they are hungry, they are actually dehydrated.
Just some um, Food for Thought!!! ;)

IM ALWAYS HUNGRY!!, AND ALWAYS EATING!, however, I dont feel bad about it. well, the hungry part but not the always eating part! LOL
I can make myself extremely full with raw foods, but it only lasts like 10 minutes! Last night i had a HUGE salad
Ingredients:
1/2lb of baby spinach and couple hand fulls of romaine
1 avocado
1 pepper
1 mango
1 entire cucumber (really big one too!)
2 beafeater tomatoes
and a handful of baby carrots
It doesn't sound like a lot, but it was, I was full to the point where I didnt want to move and 10 minutes later I asked my boyfriend for an apple!! my boyfriend DOES NOT eat any fruit or veggies. He usually says "how on earth are you going to just eat a salad!!?" but when he saw the salad I had made last night he was like "HOW ARE YOU GOING TO EAT THAT!!!"...then when I asked for the apple he asked me if I was pregnant! LOL deff. not.. but anyway!!! .... I can't and do not keep full. I carry around a pocketbook full of stuff to eat!!
For instance:
today I got up at 7:30 and before 9am I had already eatin 2 apples, 2 bananas, 1 pear, and some strawberries! ALONG with a 40oz green smoothie which had 2 more bananas and a pint of blueberries along with greens!.
since I have eatin: another banana, a peach, a tomato, flax crackers, carrots....
and the list goes on.
I do know for a fact that I go wayyyyy over how many calories then I should eat in a day... sometimes like 2500, but I dont gain weight! I stay at 145lbs no matter what! however, if it was SAD food id be back to 200lbs!
aye yi yi
and keeping me full for just 10 minutes does get extremely expensive!

When I first went raw I did a 24 hour veggie juice fast. I drank only about 8 oz. at a time every couple of hours. This not only started me detoxing, but it seemed to help my appetite afterward, I think even in that short time my stomach shrunk. Also, I do drink a water between meals/snacks (its hot and dry where I live).

I'm really hungry too. I'm new to this though; it's only day 3 for me. I ate a very healthy diet before switching. I'm trying to go a full week raw and then I'll see how I feel.
But I'm so hungry! I can't seem to eat enough!
I'm a runner. I have more than enough energy for my runs, but I can't seem to keep enough food in me! Whenever I get really hungry, I'm eating a banana and some almonds. It's 6:00 here and so far, I've done that four times today, in addition to 2 green smoothies, a huge salad with guacamole and sunflower seeds, and LOTS of fruit and veggie sticks! And I haven't even gone out for my run yet! I haven't yet figured out what I'm going to eat when I get home.
Urg, I feel like I think about NOTHING other than food. Don't get me wrong, I love to think about food...but this is ridiculous! :D
I know that my body has to get used to it.

Have you tried eating six smaller meals instead of 3 big ones? I've only been a week back on raw but that's what I do and it seems to work fine. Small meals don't have to be complicated - it can be a fruit smoothie or an all-fruit meal or some soaked nuts and dried fruit.
I posted this elsewhere, but here's a nice quick dessert that I have almost every day. It always satsifies :D.
2 tbsp raw nut butter
1 large or 2 small dates, mashed
1 tbsp carob of cacoa powder
Raw Honey (optional - I find the date is sweet enough for me but I use carob rather than cacoa).
Mash date. Add nut butter and carob/cacoa and mix until it forms a dough. Shape into balls and refrigerate.

for all the super-hungry-all-the-time people, i have two (thoroughly disgusting) words: intenstinal parasites
i know this is gross but may be worth looking into. apparently most of us have them and i didn't (want to) think about them until i passed one unexpectedly in my last cleanse. then i researched all about them and i saw that constant hunger was a symptom. allopathic doctors never even mention these because they are so normal in our society.
so then............colon cleanse anyone?

Up until the 1900's, people wormed themselves just like they did their pets and livestock. At some point it became unfashionable to address intestinal parasites. The timing of this curiously enough coincided with a drastic increase in meat consumption.

That is Gross!.....oooh, man!
how long have you been on RAW? have you been on it long enough to know that you can stay on it 100% or do you still struggle with a bit? if it's not something that comes easy to you yet, i'd stay raw and eat to satisfy your hunger.
IF you have been on RAW a while and can tweak with it, i would also suggest a cleanse. you may have an acidic body, candida, parasites, etc... that you may need to acknoledge. also, as you're losing fat, anything bad that was stored there are pouring out into your bloodstream which may also be causing the intense hungers... indication of addiction to whatever it is.
There are cleanses which you can look into on curezone.com which include testimonials and information. The site DOES have ads for products... so I'd also take some of the information on there with a grain of salt. Consider natural cleanses like water fasting, juice fasting (veggies only esp. if you think you may have candida, etc....
And if you're still eating conventional fruits & veggies, they may also be the culprit.
First things first though is be RAW and be sure you will not slip if you were to tweak with things. Because most people who tweak when RAW doesn't come naturally for them yet (meaning it's EASY for them not to even consider anything SAD), they end up much WORSE off than they started. :(

its a mental game. The brain associate eating food with feeling calm and satisfied. But this is a illusion created by the memories of the brain. Its not real. Its the same as the tobacco addiction. You think you need a cigarette but its just an association of the brain. Its just a reflex. If u notice it as a stupid reflex of your brain it wont bother you.
Its only hard if one part of you want to fall of for some reason.
Learn about how you re brain is working. Learn about how to disconnect with your thoughts who are just a reflex made by memory :)

I'm relatively new to the raw diet, but I am finding that my need for that "full" feeling is greater than my actual hunger. Rather than eat loads of nuts and seeds, I buy whole watermelons. I might eat 1/4 of a large watermelon in one sitting, but at least it isn't SAD or loaded with fats-even healthy ones.

yes there are seperate products out there for colon cleanses and parasite cleanses but if you think about it they live in the colon so doing a general colon cleanse, which is what I did, might get them out (it did for me)...having said that there are specific ingredients needed to kill some of these
you really have to do your research
look at the photos online at the parasite cleanse sites
even the colon cleanse sites
i don't have any links for you, sorry, i just did general searches
to be a bit more detailed for you, SheLovesToEat, it was a white-clear bumpy hose like thing, though thinner than a hose. you will KNOW when a parasite comes out because it is not like anything else that usually comes out. it was half a foot long, and just sat in bottom of toilet. when i'm on a cleanse i always carefully inspect what comes out, so i know what was in there. then i go online to see if others had them too and usually i find someone who did, and who knows exactly what it was.
amazing learning process! really about letting go too...literally and figuratively....and i felt so great to know it is out of me now!! i am going for first colonic next week now : )

Hi pretty enough, my sister!!!
my nasty came out on the Master Cleanse. Not all raw foodists agree with it though because maple syrup is not raw but that is how it came out for me. in fact, the first cleanse i did back in june, nothing weird came out, but the second one i did back in early august brought all kinds of things, including the big worm. sick i know...but glad it's out!
if i were you i'd consider MC, or, get into your local raw food community and ask what they are using and where to go for colonics (I recently did this and found so many wonderfully places, including a natural healer who started the colonics centre!!!). i hear dr. Gabriel Cousens recommends a chlorophyll cleanse so it is raw, and is juice based, and you will find a cazillion options at health food stores in packages with powders and instructions on how to eat. my advice is to REALLy research all the kinds out there and listen to your intution about which to try. if you haven't been raw long you may want to consult a naturopath for advice/guidance too!
best of luck, and let me know how it goes!
then maybe we can start a club: bowel critters be gone!!!

I, too, had a worm, just one huge worm and I've worried ever since that there is never just one worm. I live on a farm. Once the worms get out of control with the animals you have to worm them several times in a couple months... and then again a few months later. I've even looked at the goat wormer and thought, should I? But I haven't.

i admit i have to do more reading in this area but from everything i've read people who eat SAD diets get them regularly. no, i did not have any symptoms. if i didn't get into raw foods and cleansing it would have lived in there, or came out without me noticing, and another one takes its place...who knows!
maybe i wasn't in touch with my body enough before to notice the symptoms? that could be it, because i numbed myself with food and aspirin whenever i had ANY symptoms of anything, and regularly before.
the research is interesting.......the fact that these worms/parasites CRAVE things and you feed them blew me away, but made such perfect sense.

Interesting about the parasites (yuck!). However, if after you do a parasite cleanse and if you still need more food. I discovered something that really filled me up. Last night I had some flax crackers with guacamole. I make my own flax crackers and I add some veggie juice pulp (half flax and half veggie pulp). Since my crackers are super high fiber it seems to take awhile to digest. The fat from the avo is very satisfying as well.

I understand that it can be challenging to always feel hungry when raw. In my experience, I've found that after a water fast of 5+ days, I need much less food than before. By detoxing the system you allow your body to absorb the nutrients easily and you get full on far less food.

Regarding the question about parasite symptoms:
There are a number of different types of parasites, but a common symptom is never feeling satisfied very long with what you eat. Also you may tend to have a bigger belly than normal, like you're pregnant or drink too much beer but otherwise may look normal. And have EXPLOSIVE morning diarrhea that makes it hard to get out of the house in the morning. (I fit that profile exactly!) I had a really bad case of brain fog, too, and my eyes were always clouded over. I could never seem to wake up. But beyond that, it gets confusing. What symptoms were do to worms and what symptoms were due to other health concerns I've been struggling with? I'm still trying to remove the worms and want to use only natural cures, but nothing seems to be happening. Still lugging around the pregnant belly, but feel a heck of a lot better since I decided to go high-100% raw.
As far as how I got them, that's a "who knows", too. I've had food poisoning three times, twice from a deli that used those meat slicers. (Makes you start noticing how often they clean them... at the end of the shift? How long does the meat residue stay on those things?!?) I also ate meat a couple times that seemed a bit off. And I've always walked around barefoot a lot. In the house (and where ever I've lived there's always been at least one dog that sometimes couldn't wait to get outside), on the farm (I guess I thought I could walk around the chicken poop but remains are always in the grass, even after a rain). Kind of gross, but maybe it will make other people think about what they do. I've become super paranoid about delis, don't even want my boyfriend eating at them... or getting deli meat from a supermarket. I actually lost my third child during a bout of food poisoning. It's serious stuff.

Happened to come across this article today while looking at some of his recipes. For those of you interested in bowel cleanses, he gets into why everyone needs them, states everyone has to have them because we have nasties in there, and how to do them....introductory but a great start and i'm sure you could find more of his literature! blessings...

I got two colonics a few weeks ago and since then have not needed anywhere near half the amount of food I was eating...and I feel full and satisfied. I'm super excited about this b/c it's so much cheaper eating raw when I'm not hungry all the time...and also, I'm trying to gain weight and am eating less and gaining now. It's great! I'd highly recommend either doing colonics or some kind of cleanse/fast.

I wrapped a 9-day water fast Saturday evening, have naturally not had much appetite and did a colonic today. Amazing how you think you can be so clean and healthy yet during a session you can literally feel very warm / hot matter leaving the body which signifies that it's toxic.

I forgot to mention that sometimes I feel something moving, kind of like when I was pregnant and the baby would move.
I've thought about colonics, glad to hear it makes you less hungry. How was the experience? Is it scary? Gross? Were they done in a creepy environment? I saw a comedian make fun of them and she was saying the technician got her body parts mixed up  and put the tube in the wrong place... I hope that was made up for laughs.

I can't speak for others as I've only ever gone to one technician. Her office is a very nice setting in an office building with amethyst geodes, water features, etc. Essentially, think of like visiting an OB/GYN - you are in a smock lying on a table....but no stirrups!
The nozzle is placed in you and water enters your body that is body temp. I feel the pressure as the water builds up inside and at the point where I feel full or slightly uncomfortable I let her know "enough" and she releases the water which goes out through an enclosed system. There is a clear tube so she can see what's being eliminated but there is no odor. At times I will feel cramping and that is when something is working it's way loose and she works on my abdomen with a massager to help work things loose.
This cycle repeats itself for 45 minutes. I can literally feel when toxins come out, as I mentioned before, because you will feel something very warm / almost hot as it leaves (think of eating a dish with jalapeños!) and that warm matter is toxic. Today she said I had plaque coming out and for me, one of my reasons for water fasting was to detox to the best of my ability and release the mucoid plaque on my intestines so that nutrients from food could be better assimilated.
Typically you do it once a week for a month, then back off to 2x a month and then 1x per month for maintenance.

Thank you for the description of the colonic. I guess it's not so scary.
Last night I went to the grocery and bought stuff for myself and for another person who is not raw. The bagger put her meat ON TOP OF MY FRUIT! And that reminded me I read in a book called It Must be Something You Ate, that that is yet another way to get parasites. Also putting fruit down on a checkout counter that had a leaking meat package on it before.
Aren't I full of cheery subjects? Y'all can't wait to read my next one, huh?
