Today I went to an Asian supermarket and bought myself 2 young coconuts. I asked one of the employees there about how they eat them, and she replied that she only drinks the water from the inside of the coconut. She advised me that I am not supposed to eat the meat.
I thought people always eat meat from young coconuts.
Can someone clarify this for me.
Thanks.

Of course you can eat it! I freeze mine, since I'm fasting. I drink one or two of them a day. They are soooo good for ya!

That means, there is more "meet" for us. It's the same inside of a coconut that matures and you eat. There are lots of Recipes here using it.

When I was in Southern China and drinking/eating lots of fresh young green coconuts, the people there advised me not to eat the meat.
I ate it anyway and survived :) .

I've never had a problem with it. I use it in smoothies, desserts, and in soups!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I also thought it was perfectly fine to eat, minus what that girl had told me yesterday.

I use this with nuts and fruits and a sweetener and make it in an ice kream maker. Check this out. Click on the eBooks at top:

I live in the Caribbean and young coconuts are perfectly safe to eat.
Most families eat it every week as it is traditional to enjoy the water on weekends, usually with the Sunday meal. Not that it stops anyone from enjoying it during the week too!
