Ever since I started going raw I lost quite a lot of hair. How long does it take to reverse?

I noticed a gray hair that turned black, my normal color, at the root. I hope this is a trend.

Haven't noticed that myself, but one thing I notice, is that my new hair is coming in CURLIER in places, and I WANT more curls, as my hair is mixed-texture natural loose curls. But I AM on a higher natural protein/fat type of raw way of eating with pumping in those greens in general, some hemp protein powder+chia seeds in my green smoothies, some avocados, and raw seeds and some nuts(without going whole hog on these however). I do eat plenty of fruit too.

Yeah, me too! I first noticed this in early April, which is when it started, after 2 mos. of 90% raw on my part and a 30 lb wt. loss. (yaaaay!) It seems to have slowed some, but it is still happening. I stressed over it for about 2 mos, then decided not to worry about it any more. I do wish it would stop, though.

Because of this, raw sucks...but I'm sure it's something else. Maybe stress. I'll look into it more.

Hi everyone,

We have had several threads about this in the past. My hair has also fallen out (A LOT) the past 4 months at least! And sorry, but I am currently not even close to raw:o !! I will be starting the next 30-day challenge though!:D I felt super on RAW! So, here is what I think - this happens to me every year when spring/summer comes around.

I think this is 'natural shedding' just like my cat does this time of year. If animals shed more during the warmer months (which makes complete sense), why not us humans too?? So, I don't think we should blame it on raw in every case...;) Just my 2 cents..

Mine is falling out too. Oddly it seemed to start about the same time I started on insulin so I thought maybe that was it. I am getting some new baby hairs coming in, but they look to be grey. :(

I was just reading today in the Get Fresh magazine Summer 2008 issue about B12 at health food store. One symptom of B12 deficiency was hair loss. Whether right or wrong, they gave several other symptoms. I don't own magazine.

I had an awful nightmare the other night about all my hair coming out in clumps. It was totally disturbing and I know related to anxiety about Raw. Hope somebody has some answers - my hair's thin enough!!!!

If you're confident you've covered all your nutritional bases: B12, amino acids from a wide variety of leafy greens, essential fatty acids, etc., then chalk it up to detox. It'll grow in richer and stronger. Keep the faith! It's a process :)

I tend to agree.

There are several long threads on hair over at Gone Raw which you might check out when it comes back online (they're updating).
In one of those threads, a few people were sort of speculating that maybe our hair isn't supposed to be so thick as we have come to expect, that maybe thick-thick hair is the result of a massively protein-heavy SAD diet, and that sounded not entirely unreasonable to me.

I am not having that problem but if I were, I would make sure first and foremost that I weren't suffering any nutritional deficiencies by plugging my dietary intake into fitday (or similar) every day.

I would also make sure I were getting a good amount of healthy fats in my diet every day. EFAs are crucial to about a million aspects of good health, and cutting out too much fat can cause so many problems, hair loss among them.
One of the things I suggested, with great success, to women suffering from hair loss or thinness when I had my little vitamin shop was to take/eat lots of EFAs in the form of flax oil, hemp oil, borage oil - whatever. (Udo's Oil is a great product.) Every single one of those people saw at least some improvement in the condition of their hair.

If your diet is rich in nutrients, amino acids, and EFAs, you are eating adequate calories and fats, you're not taking medications which might be causing the problem, and your hair continues to thin and you're worried about it, it might be time to talk to a naturopath and see if they can identify the problem.
Hair loss can be a symptom of all kinds of dis-ease in the body.

I do think there may be some hair loss that's the hair equivalent of "losing the false body" as Stina suggests, and I wouldn't worry too much unless it's gone on for a long time and you know for certain all your nutritional bases are covered.

Sending hugs and healthy hair vibes ~

My hair has been coming out quite a lot as well. :) I hope it's not a bad thing. I hope it continues to grow in more fast.
