hello everyone,
our local whole foods store just started carrying different varieties of artisana coconut butter and my whole family has fallen in love with it!!! i've noticed, however, that my face has been breaking out since eating it and am wondering if anyone has had this experience...i'm always so impatient when it comes to finding out if a food that is antimicrobial is supporting an "initial breakout" due to detox, or if it really is the food itself. thanks for any input,
cc

even though it's raw, coconut butter has a lot of saturated fat and perhaps this is also why you're experiencing breakouts. i only use coconut oil now. if i'm using it for a dessert, i'll add an avocado or two to acquire the firmer texture. i would recommend switching to coconut oil. just my thoughts.

Actually, coconut oil IS the saturated fat in Coconut butter.
What most people are confused about, however, is the TYPE of saturated fat it contains. Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid which are quite beneficial for humans. Google it!

However, a saturated fat is still a saturated fat... coconut butter and coconut oil may burn more easily than a long chain fatty acid, but I wouldn't go eating lb's of it a day!

the other day i read a very interesting article regarding raw saturated fat, hormone balance and acne. simply put, the author talked about how important raw saturated fat is for hormonal balance, and when a person cuts it out of their diet, the body learns to produce hormones using different fats and experiences a "surge" in hormones when you add sat. fat back in as everything balances out. this might cause a breakout in some individuals as the body adjusts. the article resonated with me because, although i don't advocate dairy now, my skin was actually perfectly clear and my hormones very balanced during my first year of college when i ate a a diet that had the most amount of saturated fat in it. i'm going to stick with the coconut butter and oil and see what happens- my skin is not necessarily going crazy and i enjoy both.
