OK i havent tried this....but i wonder what you folks think.

for those of us that have trouble getting young raw coconuts.....what about re-hydrating dried coconut flakes? ....like the kind from wilderness family naturals.

if they are soaked long enough..... do you think they would they return to a supple texture....similar to raw your coconuts?

that would be wonderful to use in recipes that call for cups of young raw coconut meat to be ground up for a pie filling.... etc.

it was just something i was thinking about.
whats your opinion on this?

AND ALSO !..... has anyone seen young raw coconut meat sold in the frozen section of asian stores? i dont even know if this product is avilable but it would cut prep time down in recipes that called for raw young coconut meat.

just wondering..... thanx

Dried coconut is made from mature coconuts which has a completely different texture to start with. Young coconut is more similar to avocado in texture while mature coconut is hard and fibrous like carrots.

yes raweater ...i know that. i ate many young raw coconuts (and mature ones as well)... when i lived in hawaii. but i was just wondering if perhaps the rehydration might somehow make the dried coconut very soft.

maybe there is something that one could put in the soak water to soften it.
i dont know..... i was just feeling things out to see what people had to say about it.

i wish i knew more about food prep. it would sure make things easier when needing young coconut for pie filling.

thanks for your response.

ok i can see that nobody knows anything about this. LOL i dont either. i will give this a try and see if rehydrating dehydrated coconut makes the coconut soft and supple. i would love to have an alternative to the young thai coconuts that are hard to come by at times.

i'll let you know what i find out.

i still would like to know if young coconut meat is avilable frozen. does anyone know that?

thanx

Hey there,

Yes I have seen it frozen before at a Asian Market.

I know as an alternative this may or not not work for you but some people will use cashews mild taste and relatively the same texture.

Good luck with your experiment!

My guess is no, simply because I can't, off hand, think of another single fruit or vegetable that regains its original consistency when rehydrated. Soaked raisins don't turn into grapes, etc.
