Really, it's going to catch up to him eventually.

Phelps' diet - which involves ingesting 4,000 calories every time he sits down for a meal - resembles that of a reckless overeater rather than an Olympian.
Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase "Breakfast of Champions" by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.
He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.
At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.
He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

I guess the only thing keeping him alive is all that exercise! He'd better not stop swimming!

OMG, I'd be sick before I even got half way through one of his meals! And those energy drinks are such a scam. I can't believe how many people rely on them.
The guy is not human, so he can eat whatever he wants, as for as I'm concerned... :D

Is this just during the Olympics? I'm guessing after the Olympics he'll tame his eating a bit. YIKES!!! That's a lot of food-and not healthy food to boot. He looks awesome, though.

Can you imagine the quantity of raw food he would have to eat to get up to that many calories!!! He would never stop chewing! :)

I doubt it. He's training ALL the time.
It is SAD. Just think what he could do if he ate RAW? Whoa!!!

I know lots of athletes and just work-out buffs who are just everyday people and eat that much...and shashibala I think you're right...all that exercising that my friends do is what is keeping them alive...just think if they were sedentary....
I'm so glad to be in the "know" looking back on how I used to pig out just because...

Michael competed without the Speedo and won (and broke the world record) to prove his point.
The rest is pure speculation. Humans are surpassing each other records daily. Our bodies (and minds) are capable of doing many wonderful things.
Do they have extra time to train? Sure. But so do many other countries. The chinese, russian and cuban athletes live and breath their sports. Just because he's doing wonderfully, I'm not going to start to look for (negative) reasons why it's happening. I prefer to be in awe.
If he ever test positive for doping, I'll be sad and disappointed, by for now, I prefer to think he's just really, really good at it.
As for the diet, yeah, not the healthiest, but, tbh, if I had his stamina, body and success on the performances, I wonder if I would have looked for the raw diet in the first place. In Brazil we have a saying that roughly translates like this: "We don't reorganize team that is winning". While it would never work for me (too many hormonal, weight and neuro issues), he certainly feels that it works for him.
something that i have observed over and over again is that people who are very physically active and fit can really eat whatever they want and still look and feel terrific. they are just burning those calories so efficiently that it doesn't seem to matter what sort of fuel they use to power themselves.
the other side of that coin are the people who are eating a very good diet and still suffering health issues. often i see that these folks are not very active, have not got a regular exercise routine that they follow and don't look particularly fit or vibrant.
makes you wonder, doesn't it, if those who are raw and doing well were exercising more where would they be? wow. imagine. we could really show those athletes a thing or two!
the fruitarianone is in amazing shape and says he is doing mostly a liquid diet these days. he and storm seem to be the poster children for raw fitness. it's inspirational!

He would have to rely a lot on green smoothies containing loads of nuts and/or seeds, eat 10 avocados and an entire raw dessert per day for a start.

I can see this. Although I know the food our grandparents ate wasn't full of preservatives, etc., I always marveled about my grandmothers getting up every morning and fixing eggs, bacon, potatoes, gravy and biscuits. EVERY DAY  And they were still healthy.
Of course, then the menfolk would go work in the mines or factory, walked a lot because they didn't have cars, come home and work some more. And women would clean house, sew, garden, can and preserve, run after eight kids and wouldn't sit down until evening.

I started swimming competitively at age 5 and towards the end was swimming 2-4 hours a day, which is a lot less than Michael Phelps is swimming. I also supplemented that with gym workouts and land exercises. I was surrounded by other swimmers doing the same (including my three siblings). One of our coaches was a medal winner in the Olympics and we had quite a few swimmers make Olympic trials. I was never that good but trained nonetheless.
The one thing I will say....there is something unique about swimming and training that creates a HUGE appetite and it does not impact weight very much. My fellow team mates and I could eat huge amounts of food (granted, I think we ate a lot healthier--more like spagetti with marinara/cheese, salads, breadsticks etc) than meat (my mom was a vegetarian even before it was common) and we would not gain weight. There would be times, as a team, that we would go to a breakfast buffet and my goodness, we would pile it on. But nobody was fat. Everybody had great muscles and we were nowhere near the professional level of training. I had great muscle tone--just like the female swimmers have that we see competing. What balances it out is the intensity of the exercise and the fact that it is done 5-6 days a week. A recent research study showed that the typical Amish adult male eats about 7,000 calories a day--and most of it is Pennsylvania Dutch style food (i.e. fatty). But, you will rarely see an obese or fat Amish worker and that is because of the physical activity that is done on a daily basis.
Michael Phelps will probably train for years....he has not peaked yet. BUT, once he 'slows down', his appetite will most likely shift to more normal amounts of food. That is what has happened with most of us former swimmers.
GO TEAM USA!

WOW! But...even though he burns the calories right off, I am surprised that the food he is choosing to eat is SO unhealthy..

It's 'cuz it's fast and "tastes" good. Or so "they all" think that...
do you guys really think he's hot? i just don't see it. he looks like any other meat-headed jock to me. i went to highschool with dudes like that, i find them boring. meh, i must be gettin' old or something.

Yep, think back to high school (for some of us it's more BACK than others) all those jocks eating HUGE plates of food. Well, I've seen the end of THAT story, and when they're 40 (unless they seriously change their eating habits) it ain't pretty.
Blessings,

I agree with you. Not only is it high in calories, it is not the healthiest choices available to him. I suspect, as he gets older (when the body becomes less forgiving) he will modify his training and diet. It still may be high in calories to support the intensity of training, but will be healthier.
He is still a teenager and he is making food choices like one, which is understandable. BUT he is also training at a very intense level and he is lean.

I don't think he's hot either...now some of the South African swimmers are a different story :p . I just like guys with blonde or red hair and light eyes though, so maybe that's why Michael Phelps doesn't do it for me.

While I was watching him race last night, they said that he burns 4,000 calories in just one of his workouts.....they didn't say how many times a day he works out.

I'm not surprised this topic showed up here! I was appalled when I heard what he eats - not for the calories or gaining weight aspect at all. I would have thought his training regimen would include a more appreciative mind-body connection...and that he would respect The Machine and give it only the very best highly nutrient-dense food as fuel. I would hazard a guess that he's so "hungry" because he's eating primarily addictive fatty-carb garbage - and his body is still craving proper nutrition. Ah well. Can you IMAGINE what his performance could be above what it is now (jaw dropping as that is) if he was focusing more on eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, and healthy oils?!!!!!!!

this makes me wonder how the heck he works out without puking? if you're eating massive meals morning, noon and night and training five hours a day, i can't see how you could avoid working out right after eating. or maybe he's adapted to working out on a (really really really really really) full stomach... who knows.

Well, he's a huge guy with a high metabolism and constantly working out. Genetics plays a role, but this is many years of training.
Athletes can't do what they do forever.

Lele, here we say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Same idea.
And honestly, are we so defensive of the raw life style that we need to judge Michael Phelps? His body is NOT like mine. lol He's in a class by himself. and I would not deign to think I know what he needs..what's best for him. For crying out loud, whatever he's doing is working for him. In spades.
All roads eventually lead to Rome, so lighten up there peeps.

I just don't understand how his body can process all that food! If I ate even HALF that much I'd be lying on the floor struggeling to breath lol:D but I think it's going to catch up with him. I highly doubt he'll be able to do that past his late twenties and still be healthy.

If Phelps was a raw foodist:
12,000 calories per day would equal (approx):
103 lbs of spinach or
37 avocados or
5 lbs of cashews or
83 lbs of strawberries or
113 heads of romaine or
30 lbs of bananas
Obviously, he'd be pretty reliant on GINORMOUS smoothies with nuts, avos, and other fruit, nut pates, raw desserts, etc, but it could be done.

Many athletes find that their caloric needs diminish after they've been raw for a while, because their digestive systems become more efficient. Remember how in Green for Life many people who began to drink green smoothies increased the amount of HCL in their stomachs?
If Phelps went raw he could probably spend less time eating and more time excersizing. And with his salary . . . well, he could definitely afford to go 100% organic and 100% raw, even while eating a lot.

People...he is 23...at 23 anything goes....
And what did most of us know at 23 about nutrition....
He is an amazing athlete....he has won 7 golds (i am hoping without dope)
I can't believe how much people have to say about this young man who
is truly an athletic inspiration.....
So what he is not raw...there is more to health than raw...most people posting here don't even exercise LOL
