I purchased a 3 pound bag or raw almonds. I took some and soaked them but they are not sprouting. What could this mean? Should I just throw them out?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jerry

How long have you been soaking them?

Nuts will not sprout (form tails) like most seeds. Yes, how long have you been "sprouting" them? And remember to rinse, rinse, rinse!

You sure they're really raw? Almonds labeled raw in stores aren't really raw; they're pasteurized and dead.

From what I've gathered from a lot of sprouting books, almonds don't sprout.
They will just plump up a little. It's good to soak them and let them air dry or put them in the dehydrator. I sometimes soak them to aid with digestion, but not always.

Oh forgot Jerry, don't throw them out. Just dry them out and eat them. :)

Just soaking them overnight is enough to release the enzyme inhibitors and make them easier to digest. They get a little bump on one end, but don't really grow leaves. The only danger is that if you don't rinse them and leave them wet for too long they might grow mold or bacteria. Just soak them over one night and then rinse well and keep in the fridge. You can also dehydrate them after soaking if you need them to be crunchy.
It is true that all commercial almonds are treated with a gas to pasteurize
them . This is unfortunate, but they do still sprout after the gas treatment. If you want really raw almonds you must buy directly from a farm, usually via the internet.

I have been soaking them for over a week now. I had bought almonds before from a different store and they did sprout. Not these though...

They're probably pastuerized. Soaking too long - throw them out just in case so you don't get sick. Or put them in mulch for your garden (if you have one). Just my impressions based on what you've shared. Sorry for your loss. :(

Hi Jerry -
sprouting of almonds is not the best test for rawness. Some just won't sprout, but will plump up. It does not mean they are not perfectly raw. In fact, some steam pasteurized almonds DO sprout....
I think it all depends on the variety of almond, soaking/sprouting conditions.
