View Full Version : Alissa's blueberry pie question: Will other fruits gel?

I barely got Alissa's book a week ago and already made the blueberry pie 3-4 times, I love how simple it is to make and that it has around 3000 calories.
I was wondering is it the blueberries and/or bananas that cause it to gel like jello? I'm asking because I'd like to know if I can for example replace the blueberries with raspberries or strawberries or other fruits and also have it turn to "jello".

I think its the blueberries. I juice them a lot and if I let the juice sit in the fridge for a bit it gets really thick like a smoothie. Its one of my favs because its so filling. Not sure if rasberries or blackberries will do the same thing. You could always add a little physillum to thicken it. Let us know how it comes out if you try it.

Jenna is right....it is the blueberries. I've made other pies and it's something about the blueberries and bananas together that make that jell type of texture.

You know what I love to do with that recipe? Blend the blueberries into it! It turns this really unique purply-blue color and my hubby calls it "Wonka Cake". It's really cool looking!

I think MAYBE raweater posted the right calories, because of trying to GAIN weight, even though I hope I'm not right, but hoping that would be for the WHOLE pie???

Of course not, the crust alone is about 2500 calories, the total pie is over 3000.
But you seem to have fallen into the calorie/fat/sugar makes you fat trap. This is all completely false, it's not the amount of calories, fat or sugar that makes a food fattening (I eat 4000 calories a day, at least 60% of them from fat, and barely have any fat at all on me).
The truth about what makes a food fattening or not is the calorie to nutrient ratio, so for example let's take a cooked blueberry pie that's also 3000 calories, but has almost no nutrients in it since it's cooked, this pie will make you fat because what makes you feel full are the nutrients that satisfy your hunger, without nutrients, you will eat abnormal amounts of calories leading to fat gain, you could probably eat a full cooked blueberry pie and still be hungry. Alissa's raw pie on the other hand is packed with nutrition, so you feel full after only a small amount of calories, resulting in a loss of body fat.
So remember that it's not the amount of calories, fat or sugar that makes a food fattening or not, it's the lack of nutrients in the food that leads to excess eating which itself leads to fat gain. You do not need to limit yourself on anything on the raw food diet.

Isn't that exactly what the recipe says to do (except for 1 cup of blueberries which are left whole)?

Again, I'm surprised so many people here fall for the calories/fat/sugar make you fat myth, especially since you have over 2600 posts! Please see my reply above explaining that in raw food, it doesn't matter how much calories fat or sugar a recipe has, it will still cause you to loose fat.

So, I still can't get my mind around that, raweater. If I eat 3000 a day but only use 2000 per day, what happens to the other 1000? I know as far as raw goes I don't worry about carbs or fat and I don't count calories but I make sure I'm not eating too many high calorie foods because I don't want to gain weight.

I did it by working out several times a week doing the major exercises like bench press, squats, etc. using heavy weights that I can only lift 4-6 times (low reps like this cause muscle to grow, while high reps are more for endurance). I had been trying to gain weight for years on raw and tried eating all the richest recipes and I didn't gain a gram, it's only when I started working out again that I started putting on the pounds I wanted.

If you wat 3000 a day and burn 2000, then you will gain weight, but on the raw diet it would be pretty much impossible to eat that many calories while burning only 2000, most likely you'd be packed full after 2000-2500 and couldn't eat another crumb (that's what happened to me when I was not working out, I was absolutely packed after just 2000 or even less). Now that I workout again I need a minimum of 4000 calories just to satisfy my hunger, so I probably burn 3500-4000 a day. The key is, on raw food you will automatically feel packed full once you've eaten about the amount of calories you burn.

I know what you mean, raweater. The thing is, I'm attempting to recover from an eating disorder. If you put a pie infront of me, I will probably eat it all, no matter how full I get. The fact that its a raw pie doesn't help my psyche because "eat all you want" is one of the big ideas of raw (at least that's what I thought). I will have to make this for an occasion where there will be lots of people eagar for a piece so I can't eat it all!

How new are you to raw? It's pretty much impossible to eat beyondf when you're full on raw, I've tried to force myself to when I wanted to gain weight but hadn't started working out again and was never able to eat a single mouthful more after I was full, at least try it once, and don't forget the more you eat the more weight/fat you loose (this is especially true if you're not 100% raw, the more raw food you eat the less cooked foods you'll eat and in turn will loose fat).

I'm not 100% myself, I was around 75% but now that I have Alissa's book it's easier to go higher.
