And I need to know what things should most definitely be on my shopping list. :D I have been eating 100% raw for 3 days, and it has been mainly fruits and vegetables. Does whole foods have any super foods I should try? What about RAW nuts? Cacao? I need to make a trip to Target to get a spice grinder... for hemp and the like. Do they have hemp seeds you think? I'm really nervous about not getting the proper nutrition from this diet. Also, I can't afford at the moment to eat 100% organic. Will that hurt me you think? Thanks guys and girls! :)

Hey! Do you have Alissa's book? It has a shopping list in there. What do YOU feel like eating? Keep it simple. Then you can go wild!
Don't be scared. It's okay, really.
If you can't do organic - just wash foods well.
Really, keep it simpler in the beginning.
Green smoothies baby, green smoothies!!!

I agree, simple is best. And I don't know what I feel like eating... food? LOL I don't really have cravings for raw foods, yet. =D And I'm actually planning on going out Thursday to get her book and maybe Eating For Beauty, if I can find it. I'd like to get some maca, cacao, fo-ti and maybe some blue green algae. I'm so excited for this new way of living!

Oh by the way, should I get the book Living on Life Foods? Or is there a different one that will be beneficial for a newbie?

I got Alissa's book at WF.
Depending on where you are, you can definitely get: fot-ti, green food powders, raw honey, stevia, pepitas, hemp seeds, flax seeds, flax oil, Larabars (read the labels, not all are raw!), raw apple cider vinegar, seeds/legumes for sprouting, organic produce, etc.
My WF doesn't carry raw crackers, raw cacao, lucuma, maca, or any other "superfood" that I've seen. They also don't carry nama shoyu, raw nori (or any raw seaweed), or truly raw tahini and almond butters, but I know other WFs in other areas do.
It's hit or miss, really, and I have started ordering online from places that care about rawness.

Bring a note pad and jot down some prices and then go to a more local grocery store. I found organic avocados for $1.25. At WF they were more than $3.00 each.
It'll get more economical when you get into a routine of regular staples like bananas and spinach.
You may feel like you need to buy a bunch of secondary items, but it's best to add 1 new product every once in a while.
Also, fasting is a great way to get healthier and it's pretty darn cheap to do. :D

Another thing--don't buy more than one book at a time. Really get to know Alissa's book, for example. It's gigantic, anyway, and has a ton of info on sprouting and dehydrating that is just repeated in other books!
Then, download some recipes from here and other raw sites, if you want. I have a rotating stack clipped to my fridge (via magnets). I save the ones I like and chuck the rest! No cost!

Must be somewhere north of where I am, since there aren't any in the southern half of the state. You may want to check out azurestandard.com and look at their supplies and prices (sometime when you have a lot of time!) They have a lot of frozen junk food like pizzas and pot pies, but they also have really cheap spices and decent deals on nuts, seeds, dried fruits, etc. You can email or call them to find out where a drop point is that is convenient to where you work or live so you can order a small amount and not the full $400 required per delivery. Their spice prices, as I said before, are EXCELLENT!

i really enjoyed RAWVolution for recipes (oh those beautiful PICTURES!) RAINBOW Green Live-Food Cuisine by Cousins and Sunfood Diet Success System by Wolfe (or copied from Aterhov) The latter two might be too ..complicated for a newbie? i don't know, i don't think so. Sunfood.. book was my first and still is my favourite. But Alissa's is more practical and easy to read ;)

Just got back from whole foods; sad to say I'm not feeling so hot... but I made a small green smoothie with some ground hemp seeds added for extra protein. Hope that makes me feel better. Anywho, I couldn't find Allisa's book anywhere! I guess I'll have to buy the darn thing online. >_< Along with raw cacao powder, maca and fo-ti. I did get some dulse flakes, shelled raw and organic hemp seeds and some raw cashews for my first attempt at sprouting. =D But yeah. I think I'm going to take a little nap... my stomach feels very unsettled and I'm feeling kind of weak. Thanks for your responses guys.

What should be on your shopping list? The foods YOU like :) , otherwise you won't like the raw food diet at all - or the cooked diet for that matter - imagine going shopping with someone elses COOKED food shopping list.
Just like you don't like all cooked foods, you won't like all raw foods either.
Cashews might not sprout but they will be really great in other recipes.
I rarely eat organic, but if you can afford it, then great!
Your stomach is probably usettled because it takes awhile to adjust to new foods, or it's cleansing. You'll probably get all kinds of stomach upsets for the first few weeks. I always had a fallback cooked food that wasn't too bad nutritionally to help me transition when I got cooked food cravings.

Where do you shop you can get Tai Coconuts? I found some when I went out of town (4 hours away) at an Asian store but can't find any near my home.
Here is my basic staple food list, in which I can make most of the stuff I like to eat (I'm about to get some more fancy stuff eventually):
- Spinach (get in bulk at Costco), for my smoothies and raw "cooked" style.
- Baby Spinach (for salads)
- Kale (for smoothies mostly)
- tomatoes (some regular, but mostly cherry, form Costco)
- zucchini (for pasta)
- cucumber
- mixed greens/arugula
- baby portabella mushroom
- cold-pressed olive oil
- avocados
- almonds (for milk~ for my son)
- cashews (my favorite base for sauces and soup)
- other nuts in small amounts
- agave nectar
- sesame seeds
- nori (to make sushi roll)
- chia seeds (use daily on my smoothie)
- flax seeds ( I grind it and use daily on my smoothie, )
- bananas (base of my smoothie + 1 more type of fruit)
- Nama shoyu (I've been using tamari, because I still have to go to WF this week)
- other fruits and veggies depending on how they look.
Most of my stuff I get on the regular supermarket. I get some organic things (like apples) on WF, Super Target or Publix.
I don't have a dehydrator, so I don't by stuff for those recipes. I'm also looking into buying some cacau, nutritional yeast, young coconuts and such. And I need to get over my disgust for how dates look...:p
I figured I should keep it simple in the beginning. Simple ingredients do not equal same meal daily. With a little imagination, your meals can be really nice and exciting. After all, necessity IS the mother of invention..:D
HTH! Good luck!

Yes, that's where I was (the one in Beaverton). I love shopping at New Seasons. They usually have Thai coconuts.

Hey, if you have any farmers markets nearby, they are great places to get organic produce at great prices.

That's the one I go to too, even though I live downtown, because I go to yoga right next to it.

Speaking of what to shop for, this youtube video showed up just today.
A simple, but interesting video where someone shows us all the raw food in their refrigerator.

Alissa's book is good because she lists out what you should buy when you first start the diet.
