Hey everybody. I am a 31 year old female who moved to Los Angeles from Edmonton, Canada, about six years ago. Before I came here, I was SO in tune with my body; the intuition was incredible, and I felt (and looked) great.
As soon as I arrived in LA, I broke out - I mean, really broke out. It did not take long before I lost that incredible relationship I had with myself. I mean, there are so many stimulants here - visual, audio, you name it.
Well, my daughter has returned to Canada for the summer, and I am going to try to go fruitarian for the time she is gone for a couple of reasons: 1) I just want to feel good again and enjoy that self-awareness that I have lost; 2) I really want to lose the 20+ pounds (not kidding) I have gained - even as a vegetarian, since I moved here; and 3) I need to reintroduce my daughter to the importance of proper eating and health.
Well, that's about it. I look forward to reading your posts, and (hopefully) achieving inspiration and encouragement.

Hello Chelsea!
it is nice to hear from you! I am from Spain, I am 31 old, and I am quite lost too... I don't know why but I have also earned a lot of pounds, even being vegetarian, and it seems to me that it is more difficult everytime... as you see I am a bit lost too... and not only about the weight... so I will read your posts with a lot of interest :)
Please keep us posted and let us know about your progress, etc.
Be very welcome to this forum.
Cheers,

I totally relate to your "breaking out" in LA.
I went to Japan to dance in the summer of 83, and my entire body broke out with some kind of skin infection, although the heat was unbearable, and I was in the sun every day, I never got a tan, and do you know why?????
Because the smog and pollution was soooooo bad, that the sun's rays couldnt' get through, I didn't really believe this until I contacted a dermatologist for what skin challenges I had when I returned.
My skin has never quite been the same ever since, because I wouldn't take antibiotics, and I was very suseptable because I lived in the Pacific Northwest, where we have truly clean and clear air.
So, there you go.
Can't you move outta' there?
Of course, you probably feel like you can't as, you are there, but I would think of some way to get outta' there for sure, your health is more important than anything else.
Blessings,
and welcome to the board.

So, today I completed five days of my fresh fruit thing, which I am hoping will help me in the transition. The funny thing was this - today, there was a package of Werther's Originals (candy) on the table at work. I had one and found myself craving other garbage. I didn't succumb, fortunately, but am definitely convinced there is a correlation.
Also, where does wine fit in? It is not raw, I think. I really like a glass once in a while.

My question would be, why are you raw? Is it for your health? The true question is, where does "alcohol" fit into a healthy food program? People will say ~ one can get anti-oxidents from wine, blah, blah, blah. Well, there are plenty of ways to get anti-oxidents (all the fruit, yellow/red veggies we eat) w/out inbibing a drug. Here's more for you:

I just wanted to give you a warm welcome to the forum.
I hope you find you're balance soon in that big city.
It is my understanding that organic wine is considered raw as it is not heat processed. Of course there are other issues to consider but that is for you to decide for yourself.
And so best wishes and many blessings to you during your fruitarian summer.
Be Merry~ :)

First of all, thank you to every person who has responded to my posts; it is so nice to see that others do care and want to share their experiences and/or input.
I had a 1/2 pint (250 mL) of Haagen Dazs chocolate l/f sorbet in the fridge and thought - why not; after all, I have been very well behaved. Well it tasted alright, but not as good as I remember. The feeling afterward, however, is gross. I feel as though I want to regurgitate.
Can sorbet be made with fruits? It gets really hot at times in this city, and I like iced foods at times.
Thanks.

Hi Chelsea,
Welcome to this forum.
I suggest you may wish to try a few things. First, if you post your specific questions in the section for questions, you'll get lots of responses. Also, it would be a terrific investment to buy Alissa's book. It will answer so very many ... if not all ... of your questions and will provide you with that foundation of knowledge on which you can begin to build a raw life. Also, if you wish to be fruitarian, there are some sites that support that lifestyle. Doug Graham's is one. Lastly, by "LA" I don't know if you actually live in the city of Los Angeles or if you live in the greater metropolitan area like some of us do. There are so many people without skin problems here, though, that I wonder if there may be other factors ... Are you using different skin care products than normally? Had you been eating differently? Do you drink enough pure water? I'm not discounting your experience at all; I'm just thinkin out loud. Oops -- I re-read your original post and realize that you said you broke out six years ago -- so, if you're not broken out now, just ignore what I wrote, okay?
Anyway -- welcome.

I make 'mango sorbet' by whipping up some frozen mango in my food processor. (Now I don't really remember ever eating 'sorbet' as such so I don't know how close this is to the texture etc...)
I think I've also come across a recipe for watermelon sorbet which uses frozen watermelon and a bit of lime jucie or something. I guess you could try any frozen fruit blended in the food processor and see how it comes out.
If you like iced foods why don't you try banana icecream - do a search on this site and you'll come across some recipes for this.
Frozen fruit is also good, my partner eats both plain mango and grapes that have been frozen. And I think there is a fairly recent post where one of the members has made like fruity icy pole type of things.
Have fun :)

I'm curious as to what you mean by being lost in L.A. You've been here six years. As RT says, you talk about your skin breaking out 6 years ago. Is that still happening? And gaining 20 pounds since coming here ~ 6 years ago. Sooo, does that mean you don't get out and exercise? If that's what it is, and you are in the general L.A. area, the Sierra Club has guided hikes for all levels weekday evening in Griffith Park ~ and they are free. You'll meet all kinds of people and maybe not feel so "lost".

i found a melon sorbet on care2.com. cut up favorite melon in blender or food processor, puree enough to yeild 3 1/2 cups. add sinple syrup (honey) plus 1 tablespoon line juice. freeze in ice cream freezer 20 min. i haven't tried this yet but i will. however the banana ice cream is to die for. it helps beat the heat. best of luck. terri

I am not geographically lost, rather, feel lost as far as my relationship with myself. As far as exercise goes - I train in martial arts and love it. When I referred to my skin breaking out six years ago, I was attempting to delineate the shock to my system that I had gone through.
As far as the hikes in Griffith Park - I am a single mother who works full-time in addition to attending law school. Tae kwon do is all I have time for at this point, but I do appreciate the suggestion. A girlfriend of mine participates in this activity quite regularly.
Hopefully, that clears up the confusion. I simply seek to be more in tune with my body and its needs, and believe that I am attempting to undo what I have allowed to accumulate over the past six years.
Thanks.
