View Full Version : my thyroid is freaking out on RAW - ideas?

I've been in RAW transition (50-100% depending on the week) for the last 7 weeks. I'm also hypothyroid (underactive). My thyroid has been freaking out!

Just before going (more) RAW, my thyroid dropped and my doc increased my medication and I felt better for about 3 weeks. Then I started going RAW and I felt "off." Checked my thyroid again and it had come back up, so my doc reduced my medication. I felt better for 2 weeks, then bad again. My thyroid functioning had increased again & doc reduced my meds. I've now reduced my meds three times - I'm on a lower dosage than I have been for a few years.

So, basically, my thyroid seems to be freaking out - but also in a good direction, I'm on less synthetic hormone.

I'm just wondering - has anyone else had a similar experience? Do you have any suggestions for me for helping my body heal/stabilize my thyroid in this process?

I do believe that in the long run it will stabilize and my body will do what it needs to do. But in the mean time, I'm kind of a mess with all this up & down of my symptoms and looking for ideas for a smoother transition.

Thank you for any ideas and/or support!
Bri.

Sorry, I don't have any useful information for you, but wanted to just say good luck and hoping it settles down soon for you.

Raw may or may not have anything to do with it. For me it was cutting out soy. I am no longer on meds. Of course it also would depend on *why* you had low thyroid. Some thyroid conditions go low and high.

Hey! I hear 'ya! I believe since you are NOT 100% raw - that has a LOT to do with the instability of your thyroid. Are you incorporating ANY sea greens? What did the trick for me (read my testimony) was going completely raw (NO slip ups) and incorporating sea greens. Your thyroid wants to be well, the meds are trying to make it happen as is the partial raw diet, but it's confused. You're gonna have to give it time. Feed your body properly and your thyroid will cooperate. Our bodies are amazing, healing machines.
By eating the cooked foods, your body is using it's enzyme source and not using those enzymes for healing purposes. It's all a process. You can't expect your body to do miracles. PLUS give it time. 7 weeks is nothing. Your body didn't get unhealthy in that short of a period of time - it's certainly not gonna heal quick.
Also - are you drinking green smoothies? They ARE wondrous drinks.
Try doing a 30-day 100% raw and see what happens. I mean NO slip ups. And drink plenty of water. At least 1/2 your body weight in ounces.
This DOES work. YOU have to make it happen though.

lucy,

how do you eat your sea veggies? and how much approx a day to you have?

I just ordered some dulse and I used to put it in my green smoothies but kinda salty and fishy. I also put some in my corn chowder but I wonder if it was enough..it was only about 1/4 a cup.

Thank you Lucy. I love your story & your support!

I do think this is a healing process and I think I'm headed in the right direction. It's just feeling a bit rocky in the process. I also believe that 100% RAW is my answer, and I am working on that process.

What did the trick for me... incorporating sea greens.

Would you be willing to share a bit more about the sea greens? I do eat an average of 1-2 sheets of raw nori each day and occasionaly use kelp in recipes (but not conisistently). What kinds/amounts was helpful for you? Do you know of any other info out there on how much or what kinds makes a difference?

Thank you,
Bri.

Hey! That's cool that you eat that much each day. I do dulse and kelp powder and spirulina in my smoothies and blue green algae daily too. I don't know which is better then the other. It's all good.
You'll get there...hang in there and keep eating raw!!!

That's a good amount - that's probably what I do daily. EVERY day I have some sort of sea greens. Be it powder in my smoothies or just breaking off a chunk and chewing on it. DAILY!

Also - another thought - you may want to make sure your body is alkaline - NOT acidic. Do pH testing. I believe that also helps tremendously. Lemons are BIG alkaline producing foods. I have a lemon daily in my smoothie.

Thanks again Lucy - I didn't realize that spirulina is a sea veggie! I put that in my gs sometimes, but can certainly do so more consistently.

Your story is so inspiring - thanks again.
