I got one for my birthday. It was about $500 on e-bay and it is fantastic. I love it. Had been living with an 25 year old Oster Blender till then. So it was a real treat from my family.

I imagine it would be awfully noisy. Usually when I go to juice bars and get a smoothie, they have plastic walls around the blenders to block the noise and it's still really loud.

yeah i know what you mean....its NOISY!. i looked on the vita mix website under the commercial page and they have a rubber thing you can buy thats a sound dampener. it fits between the motor base and the container.
i dont know how well it works but if i get one of these beasts.... i am going to get one of those too. I hate all that noise but the vita mix certainly does the job.

But it liquefies things so fast it doesn't really matter. Like 5-10 seconds for greens smoothies.

WOW! thats interesting. the thing is really a beast. thats lightening fast.
what else have you made in it? have you made nut butters? or ground up flax seeds?
one more thing. does the machine get hot? i was thinking that maybe it would heat food up beyond 120 deg.
actually.... thats been one of my concerns about the vita mix in general. the last one i had heated food pretty warm. i was not a raw foodist then...that was an older one i had about 15 years ago. but....maybe thats not a concern anymore.
if the commercial vita mix is that quick...maybe there is no chance to heat up.

It certainly doesn't heat up in the short time I use to make smoothies. It does say in the instructions that you can make soup in it but I'm sure you would need to leave it on for a while before it would heat up. Like I said no heat coming from the machine for smoothies. This includes a V8 type juice where I was blending carrots and beets, onions, garlic. So I would think that unless you wanted to make a hot soup you would not have to worry.

i do remember when i was trying to make nut flours (in my older vita mix) ...that often.... the finely ground nuts would jam under the blade and instead of a fine flour i got nut butter LOL.
i also remember that the machine that i had would get very hot after a few minutes of blending. but since you say that the job goes SO FAST! i guess there would be no heat.
what else have you made in your vita prep?

We make EVERYTHING in our Vita Prep.
Well worth the expense.

I was a bit confused when I looked these up. Apparently there is a Vita Prep 1002 and a 1003 and a 1005 and maybe others? Which to buy?
And has the removal of the lid been made any easier? Just curious.
Thanks.:)

Didn't know there were sev'l models...Will have to look this up, but I have the Vita Mix 5000 with the 2 hp motor and have overheated it just TOO many times by wailing on it.
Was just at a raw retreat a couple weeks ago with Eva Rawposa. she was making a movie and filled a Vita Mix up with chopped butternut squash and AI was thinking if I did that I'd overheat it, but couldn't say anything because she was filming. Sure enough, it overheated so she had to stop filming.
It only heats when you wail on it, but her comment was that for around $400, you should be able to wail on it!
So I'm def getting the Vita Prep.....

When I bought my VM last year, it was between the 5200 and the Vita Prep. When I asked the sales rep about the difference, she said they performed the same and that they sold the Vita Prep just because those who used it for their business wanted something more powerful/durable (but she was saying it wasn't really more powerful). I'd put so much time into comparing blenders at that point that I figured she must know, and I got the 5200. What decided it for me was that the 5200 had a 7 year warranty and the Vita Prep had a much shorter warranty (I think 3 years?). Maybe she didn't know what she was talking about (you'd think a 3hp would overheat less than a 2hp).
I'm happy with the 5200. The overheating doesn't stop me from making anything. If I'm asking it to blend something that's really, really thick, I don't overfill it or let it work too long. I'd rather do that and have a longer warranty.

It's odd, but the Vita-Mix people also tried to talk me out of the Vita Prep Pro 3 hp one. I spoke to sev'l people there and one alluded to the fact that the Vita Prep was made somewhere else?! Maybe Blendtec makes their motor.....LOL....Now don't start any rumors....
But they DID not want me to get the Vita Prep Pro and I got the feeling it was because it was made somewhere else!
I def want one.
