View Full Version : Which Vegetables are safe/unsafe to juice?

Well, I threw up some juice an hour ago. I'm assuming that that's the bodies way of saying 'no thanks'.

It contained:
One head of garlic
a bunch of kale
a bunch of mint from the garden
five of carrots
a peach

Is anything on that list truly unsafe to be juicing?

I've been having about four cups of kale-carrot-beet juice a day. Is this safe? What common plants *shouldn't* be juiced?

-Thanks!

I have no idea personally, but I don't think I could stomach one bunch of garlic in anything. Let alone with peaches. But that might just be me.

I agree on that.
One head of garlic would be a severe shock to your system.

How did I drink it? With my nose pinched :p

I managed the same drink a few days ago just fine. Made me feel FANTASTIC. First time in years that both nostrils had been clear (and remained so since). Coworkers weren't too happy though...

So, garlic shocks the system, eh? Would 1/4 head be too much? I just love the effect it has on me.

I think you're right.

How much juice do you normally drink? I'm beginning to think that kale everyday might not be such a good thing.

I would drink between a pint and a half and 2 pints but mine is mostly cucumber and celery with the greens and the wheatgrass added. I also add half a lemon if it has the skin or a whole lemon if I have grated the skin for something else.
The lemon makes the entire thing very palatable. Mine tastes nice so I do not have to hold my nose to get it down.

i don't drink much at all to be honest. but i've been fasting a lot so that's really part of the reason.

kale daily isn't going to harm you but it's important to mix up your greens. so perhaps add in spinach every other day?

you can drink a gallon of juice a day... and a gallon of water. this is what they do on the 92 day Juice Feasting program. but of course, that would be all you'd want to take in... it's a LOT of juice (and water).

i am not feasting... i'm fasting. totally different thing.

Aleesha, would you please explain the difference? It sounds like perhaps it's a quantity thing.

Fasting is purposely trying to deprive your body of getting nutrients by not eating or drinking at all from sunrise to sunset (by Jewish and Islamic traditions), or by drinking water, or unsweetened tea for days.

Feasting is consuming nutritious liquids, like the Master
Cleanse, juices and smoothies. But the liquids should be watery. Like an apple in 4 glasses of water in a blender oppose to an apple in 1 glass of water where you are eating apple sauce. The idea is get nutrition in but up your water intake.

Fasting according to Jewish law (Halacha) is not
purposely trying to deprive your body of getting nutrients There are two 26 hour fasts--Yom Kippur, the Day of Attonement, and Tisha B'Av, the 9th of Av (the 9th day of the month of Av, which happens to fall this Saturday at sundown until Sunday at sundown). The other fasts (4 of them, 5 for first-born men) are from sunrise to sunset and are for specific historical reasons on specific dates, none of which have anything to do with depriving the body of nutrients. The fasts do have spiritual connections, though. No food or drink in consumed during any of these fasts.

Just want to set the record straight.

I've never heard of the Master Cleanse being consider a juice feast. There isn't any feasting involved at all. It is a cleanse.

Feasting can be green smoothies... just juice feasting is not an apple in water. It's the juice of an apple. And to feast... it would be the juice of many apples.

Fasting - for me personally - isn't about depriving my body of nutrients at all. Hence why I'm drinking juices and adding wheatgrass and spirulina to my juices - although some days I'm simply doing water. It's about allowing the body to rest in a deeper rest than juice feasting.

But I am merely speaking from my motives and experiences... it is different for everyone who fasts or feasts. So everyone will have a different answer to this question.

It is quantity. To feast you drink a gallon of juice and a gallon of water a day.

To fast you drink less... often much less. Some days I consumer probably 4 glasses of juice and water, other days I consume more. I am simply going with the flow of what my body wants.

As I said in my post above... and I'll go into a little more detail here...

Juice feasting brings a huge amount of nutrients into your body. This is the program you want to follow if you have dis-ease in your body. It is very very healing. Your body is given more nutrients than it could use in a day. This is great if you have cancer or even something else to heal.

Fasting is often used for spiritual purposes. It's not about healing, it's about resting. It's about allowing your body to go into a very deep resting place and just (in essence) giving a mini-vacation to your body. Think of how it works and works - every moment from conception till death. This is a way to let it have a break and not work so hard. During this time of rest... you are able to access different areas spiritually that you do not and can not access while consuming food. Your body doesn't have to work, so the energy you take in allows you to access other areas (in essence... I hope you get the idea of what I'm saying).

Both feasting and fasting can have huge spiritual growth opportunities - and many people experience these while doing either one of these... so - when you are getting ready to do a fast or feast... it's important to decide what you want to achieve.

Is it health? Relief from dis-ease? - feast
Is it spiritual connection? - feast or fast
Is it weight release? - feasting is more likely to give you this only because most people have more energy while feasting so they can continue to exercise. fasting you have less energy and your metabolism slows down whereas your metabolism doesn't slow during feasting.
Is it a change of lifestyle/diet? - feast. If you are coming to leave a SAD diet... then feast. Your body is probably nutrient deficient and needs to be fed, nurtured and healed.

Hope this assists you.
Please remember I am talking from my research and my personal experience... it doesn't make me right... just makes this my knowledge is all.

Wow, Aleesha! Thanks so much!! This is lots of great information all in one place. I particularly like how you broke down the reasons for fasting/feasting.

Also, I admire your knowledge on this subject. And experience. Thanks!

Gittel, I never do anything half-cocked. I always research like crazy. It's a huge part of who I am. Now that doesn't mean if given the opportunity I won't try something on a whim (like a new form of massage etc) but in most cases... you'll find me doing research before I try stuff.

And... I'm honoured to share it with others. Absolutely honoured. If I can assist one person with my sharing... then my job is done. That's how I look at my magazine. If my article/column/meditation that I write can assist one person... then it's completely worth the effort involved. Anyone else is icing on the cake :D

So thank you for resonating with my words.

Wow, Aleesha you are so amazing the way you explain everything.

I love reading your informative posts about the fasting/feasting. I have learned so much in such a short period of time.
