for those of you with the excalibur dehydrator, do you find the timer useful? in other words, is it worth the extra money? or does it matter if something dehydrates a little while longer until you get home/wake up? thanks

nope you can always pick up a timer at the hardware store and use it, if you decide to. it's never been a problem for me though.

i left crackers in the D for 3 days once... forgot about them. they were still super yummers!

I had one with and one without. I like having a time. Necessary? Absolutely not.

No, I don't think so. In the dehydrator nothing will actually burn, just get crispier.

Some recipes aren't completely dehydrated in order to keep some chewyness so for those it's useful, it's also a great safety precaution as you can't forget it on. Mine's thermostat actually jammed in the on position a few weeks ago and I think it easily reached 200 degrees inside and cooked everything, but it doesn't seem to be able to get hot enough to cause a fire even when jammed in the on position.

My excaliber (?) dehydrator has a timer but it has never worked! I never contacted the company because I needed to use it and it would have taken too long for the shipping to and from Alaska. So, I just watch and see. So far everything seems to have turned out okay. I also suspect that the thermostat is not working quite right either, but then again I just use it as is rather than taking the time to send it off to be fixed.

I wish I'd gotten a timer with mine. Never thought I'd need it, but as soon as I started using it, I realized I would need it for some recipes, as someone mentioned above. I plan on trying a plug in timer like they sell for lamps, as another poster mentioned. Hopefully it will work.
