I have to attend an event where we are suppose to bring a covered dish. This is a tough crowd:rolleyes:, they are extra SAD!LOL I don't want to bring the typical SAD food but I need something that they would actually try. Something that is attractive and taste awesome. The kind that people are usually surprised to find out it's raw or actually good for them. If you were going to introduce someone for the first time to a raw dish what would you prepare? We were told to bring a covered dish and the host will provide the desserts.

I personally would do (and have done) the Eggless - egg salad spread dish and flax crackers.

Or Alissa's Angel Hair Pasta and marinara sauce. Even my die-hard meat and potato son in law loved that one.

I'm taking Alissa's Potato Salad to a pot luck. Might put a label on it so everyone knows it's a jicama/corn salad, because it looks exactly like a SAD potato salad.
I don't understand the term "covered dish"....does that exclude salads?....or is any dish okay as long as it's covered?

I am going to try Alissa's 'meatloaf' with mushroom gravy this week. I bet that would be great to bring!

Never realized that the term "covered dish" wasn't universal. LOL I guess it is what you guys would call a pot luck. Everyone brings something that would be a main course type item. The host provides desserts, drinks and in most cases salad. Good suggestions - thanks!
Where do I find the Angel Hair Pasta and sauce recipe? I see several post that mention it but not the exact recipe.

I have lots of success with Alissa's recipes, but perhaps there is a pasta and sauce recipe that would work for you here: http://goneraw.com/recipes/list/pasta

I think most things raw would taste good, including the raw taco salad and spaghetti/lasagna, ravioli, and whatever else.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The link was VERY helpful!
I know we all think that most things raw taste good. However, people that are use to the typical SAD diet definitely notice a difference. Some things are certainly an aquired taste. So I guess what I was looking for would be something that might be considered transitional meals. The suggestions are great and I think they all would work. I'll try the Angel Hair Pasta and sauce first!

not a main dish but a simple great desert from alissa :
- in blender coarse chop half walnuts , half raisins . press into glass baking dish at about a 3/4 " thickness
- in blender about 10 dry dates , cup of water , juice of half a lemon . blend til a frosting consistancy . ice the walnut / raisin mixture with it then chill in freezer a couple hours . cut into brownie size portions .
* dont quote me on amounts because im guessing from a recipe i read a few years ago . and the thing that makes this desert is the delicious date / lemon frosting .

I would bring a beautiful tossed salad and Ani Phyo's Mango Cobbler (my favorite). That way not only will everyone swoon over your cobbler but you will have a complete meal to eat :D .

michigan roman - is this the recipe you are referring to?
Date Nut Torte - Living on Live Food, Alissa Cohen
BASE
2 cups raisins
2 cups walnuts
FROSTING
1 cup dates, pitted and soaked
FOR BASE
In a foor processor, combine raisins and walnuts and blend until well blended ad moist. (This will take a few minutes and you may see it forming a ball. Just make sure the raisins come out looking like a fudgey mixture andare not still grainy).
Remove from processor and mold onto a plate in a round circle about 1 1/2 inches thick.
FOR FROSTING
In a food processor, combine dates and lemon juice until smooth and creamy.
Spread the frosting on top of the torte
NOTE: I like this served at room temperature as the frosting and torte are still sticky, but if you want a firmer texture that will be easier to slice, refrigerate it for a few hours.
That sounds right but there is lemon juice in the frosting.

I vote Alissa's recipe for pesto-stuffed mushrooms. I don't think people would even realize it's good for them it's so delicious. One little tip I discovered experimenting: I found that I could enlarge the whole in the caps by simply peeling off the outer layer of the mushroom. They not only looked better, the caps were nice saturated in the olive oil, just like a greasy fried appetizer!
Let us know what you choose.
Also, a simple pate and crudites is a classy move.
