Hey guys this is a really weird question but i was wondering if anyone else has a hard time making recipes that are supposed to be mock meat or seafood, also cheeses and creamy cheese sauces . I really want to try some new recipes but the thought just turns my stomach when i read that something is supposed to taste and resemble these things... am i just crazy?

Not crazy.. It's just hard to get used to these things especially when dealing with foods because it's something that we've been doing all our lives eating so any dramatic changes are going to take some time to get used to. I'm having a hard time adjusting too.

Yeah, I guess just try something else if you're not interested in that right now like someone else suggested to me when I thought the GS were weird that I should try something else that I liked for a while then maybe later on I'd be interested in GS or other raw foods.

I don't have a problem with cheese. I do have a problem with things that are intended to be mock meats. I have never tried to make them. They just don't sound appealing. Perhaps if they had a different name like walnut patties or some such thing. But the meat names really bother me.

Your feelings are perfectly understandable. I don't like dishes that are labeled "mock __________(fill in the blank)" because I already have a preconceived notion of what the real thing tastes like, and the fact that the raw version doesn't taste like that is very unappetizing. Many "mock meat" dishes, "mock cheeses," and pates are made with a large amount of nuts; I'm not a huge fan of nuts, especially when they're used in savory dishes, so this does not appeal to me. I understand your feelings completely. Just stick to the dishes that you like.

Yep, I wish they wouldn't name them "mock ___" because it DOESN'T taste like the real thing. Maybe someone who's never tasted the real thing might think so but those of us raised on the real deal - NOT! I have found that if I ignore the name and try it anyway without thinking it's going to taste LIKE something else, I will often like it.

In the beginning I couldn't imagine making food with nuts but after a while I got used to it. Somethings even taste weird at first but now I love nut meats... but I try to limit nuts at the same time but they are good now.
Some of those things just use the same herbs and spices that would be used, so they conjure up the days in the past when some of us would eat those items! Buuuut, sometimes they're just good herbs/spices/ingredient mixes for the "heavier" items like walnuts and other nuts.
No need to think of it as attempting to conjure up some dead animal! And feel free to rename recipes if you want to.
I love the mock salmon pate the way I make it usually, which is with sunflower seeds instead of walnuts. And either way, they're not fishy!

Your tastes will change and change and change and then your body will want different tastes. Listen to your body and learn.
I can't do meat impersonations. Nor can I do cheezy pasta recreations...it doesn't matter...
remember - green smoothies!!!

I was a vegetarian for so long that the "mock meat" recipes don't really bother me. I never really thought about it, but I tend to skip over them. In considering them now...from an ethical standpoint I don't consider them meat anyway, so they don't have the same impact on me as actual meat and the slaughterhouse industry. I can see where they are probably very helpful transition foods for someone who is trying to let go of meat or is coming directly from a SAD diet. The one thing I do love is Alissa's mock salmon pate though and I go through cycles of making that a lot or not at all. It's soooo good to me. :)

Me too Eva...love the salmon pate. When I tried the sunflower seeds though, the texture was so different. I think because I don't have a grinder to really work on the seeds. I just stick with walnuts now.

I'm a mock salmon Pate lover myself, but honestly I never try to compare raw to cooked because it is different. Some SAD food lovers will hear that raw is like cooked and will expect it to taste that way.
I believe raw can be good without comparing to cooked but I know it's good to compare to cooked for some transitioners so they won't feel they are losing anything.

I'm not a big fan of mock meat this and that. So last night I made tacos. And instead of using walnuts for the taco meat, I used mushrooms, ground them up, and put the taco seasoning in them. It turned out really good, and is much less rich and filling that so many nuts. I think I will try this technique with a few other mock meat recipes.
Does anybody ever do this?

Good Morning Family!
Never thought that I would be eating this way, this is my 10th day! Weighed myself on day 7 surprised to see 10lbs gone. The brownies I made are delicious, but next time will use walnuts like the recipe states, not as sweet, but sweet enough to fool my taste buds. Made a honey mustard ddressing recipe to die for yesterday. But, this morning experimenting-again- with the smoothies, use dandelion greens UGH!!!!! will not use them alone, maybe I will mix with spinach, used a mango and 2 bananas, will tolerate.Dont like to throw food away---Way to expensive. Wanted to share with the my family. You guys have a great rest of the week.

I have no problem with eating mock meats, though, I do not think of them as 'mock meats'. If it's walnut taco filling, then it's 'walnuts' to me.
But.. I don't think I will be making any salmon-tasting stuff, since I was never a seafood person. I am fine with making veggie burgers, etc..

Lol, I might actually like mock versions of those foods because I've never had the real thing and have nothing to compare it too. No, those things don't sound appetizing but don't get me wrong, I'll try anything once, as long as it's raw :)
