I ordered a case (12 x 16 oz.) of Maranatha Organic Raw Tahini from the local health food store and they called me back to tell me that it was discontinued. Ugh!!

Even tropical traditions says it is no longer available.

Anybody know what the deal is??

I did an internet search and I cam up with a recall message:

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2007/20070510be.shtml

Although it is quite old, it may have let to the demise of this line. I checked the Maranatha website and there is NO tahini listed.:(

Also, I saw a press release that MaraNatha was acquired by Hain. It is possible that Hain pulled the line so as to not compete with there other comapny, Arrowhead Mills which makes tahini (sadly not raw). This is unfortnate. I had noticed that I couldn't find it in Whole Foods or Sprouts lately, but I didn't ask. Whole Foods had another brand (I don't remember the name) of raw tahini, but I don't like it as well (it is kind of bitter).

Has anyone out there tried making their own tahini? I think the Green Star Juicer will make tahini. I can't imagine life without tahini.:(

I make tahini but it's just not the same :-(

It is much dryer. With a vitamix you must add oil after dry-grinding the seeds into flour. If the oil is sesame or an olive oil that doesn't taste much, you get a nice tahini. With the greenstar you get a heavy, dry paste that crumbles apart, it is so dry. I ended up stirring in some hemp oil and some honey. It was not quite right, so it went into pates, smoothies, and then I turned inot a sort of halvah with more honey and cocoa.

also try walnuts instead of oils. they are oily and work well.

Artisana makes a raw tahini, right?

My WF carries this one too- http://www.livingtreecommunity.com/store2/product.asp?id=10&catid=1

I love their almond butter, but I can only afford like 1 jar every months=(

Maranatha products aren't raw anyhow, so it's no loss.

They used to have one that was labeled raw. Are you saying that their label was false?:( I used to use it alot thinking it was raw.

Yes, falsely labeled. There's use to be a few old threads on here about that. We should probably have a permanent thread/sticky on which brands are & aren't truly raw.

At what temperature are your raw nut butters produced?

During the grinding process for all of our products, heat is generated by the friction of the nuts inside the grinder. We do not specifically monitor this temperature, but we know it is higher than the threshold set by anyone following a strict raw eating plan that calls for only heating foods at very low temperatures.

also:
We will be using steam pasteurization for the almonds used in our almond butters.

Thanks for the info. So much for truth in labeling.

Ditto!

This is a surprise to me that it was not raw! Good to know the truth if it is so.

anyone can put RAW on the label and not get in trouble. There is no certification needed. And it's not regulated. Same for antibiotic and hormone free stuff.
