View Full Version : To clean Vitamix - Clorox or Javex?

My vitamix stinks! It smells "fishy". I know it is from the greens and I always rinse it with soapy water just as the instructions say to do but now I feel it needs that "extra" cleaning. The instruction book (owner's manual) says to use "clorox" but I can only find Javex (although it says it is made by Clorox). Does anyone know anything about this? Maybe I should e-mail the vitamix people too. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've never heard of that. I use a natural dish detergent and a brush and some elbow grease.

Hi Lucy. Yup, it's in the "owner's manual" for when we want to give it an extra special cleaning. My vitamix seems very clean but it just stinks and I'd kind of like to get rid of the smell. Anyway, I e-mailed the company to see if I can get away with a bit of javex for the 15 minute soaking.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Have you tried white vinegar and letting it run for a bit?

I've had mine for 12 years and it's never stunk. Might be some food stuck under the blades?
I would use boiling water and white vinegar of lemon juice.

Hmmm - maybe I should do that.

I just use regular dishwashing detergent and a bottle brush. Gets rid of the smell right away!

REVVELL.....every time I read one of your posts I wonder "what is that picture by your name". Just curious!!
My vitamix doesn't smell but it does get a buildup of something that resembles hard water....I'd love any suggestions for that.

Ummm, good question. I can't remember. Someone sent me a bunch of pictures of unusual critters and I chose this one. It's how I look when I'm in overwhelm.

I think the instruction manual tells you how to take apart the base of the container (blades, etc.) for thorough cleaning. Might be worth a try.

Baking soda and vinegar might do the trick.

Hi there, Have you tried baking soda and vinegar.
This is what I use to clean alot of household items and even our drains. Run the vitamix with vinegar and baking soda than add some hot water - run then rinse.
Take care!!

I have a breville blender and I know that food gets stuck in the gasket where you unscrew the blades for cleaning. At first I didn't take it appart after each use and it smelled weird as the food stayed in the gasket area. Now I simply unscrew the blade after each use and rince the blades, gasket, and container where the gasket sits which cannot be cleaned when it's assembled. Since I do this, there are never any smells left in it.
I assume the VM, and most blenders, has a similar issue.
