This morning I made Alissa's chili using the slightly sprouted barley.
In 2007 on the boards here someone stated that the barley is too chewey in Alissa's chili recipe.
If the barley is too chewy this is what I do:
I put a cup of barley in my Braun blender, add enough water to blend and just partially blend it. I put that into the huge pan and repeat until all the barley is partly blended. It has the consistency of cooked hamburger when done this way.
Don't worry that the water will water down the chili too much. It won't.
I made about three gallons of the chili this morning!
I'm going to a bible conference to speak this weekend and everyone will be eating SAD. So I figured I'd take chili.
I might also try Alissa's Pizza as well. Right now I am sprouting the barley and wild rice for that.

Mr. Green Jeans,
Are you speaking at a large bible conference? Will you be visiting CO? If so, here close to Denver so come on over and meet us.
I have a Health Ministry. Wouldn't it be nice to introduce some of Gen. 1:29 to the folks so they can continue doing the work they are called to do being healthy and without pain? Maybe I can do some raw cooking demos for the folks????? I must say from experience these folks are super hard group to "crack" on health message. No judgment, but experience here.

Thanks for the tip. I'm definitely going to try that. I made the chili without the barley but it's not very filling that way.

Hi Carolg,
I usually give talks in the eastern U.S., Canada, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan areas. I have been known to give a talk or two in California. I don't know if I will ever got to Colorado.
Putting a raw demo alongside a message or so from Genesis would surely re-inforce the ideas we were wanting to get across.

Yummylicious! Alissa's Chili is really great! I had some for lunch today.
It has the exact same texture as if it had hamburger in it. The barley has a neutral taste with the spices are great.
If you love chili, this recipe more than offsets the cost of Alissa's book!
I was getting bored of the same ole every day fare so I cracked Alissa's book Living on Live Food. Glad I did!
I fudged around on the quantities of ingredients because I was making sooo much. So I just guestimated.
Chili has always been my great weakness in life. After going raw, when going into a restaurant I always wanted a bowl but just said NO! Now I don't have to deprive myself!
Thanks Alissa!

I loooove Alissa's chili... and when I do catered dinners, the chili is very often requested -- it's wonderful with some crackers or onion bread on the side along with a huge green salad.... omg.. I'm in heaven!!! waaay better than SAD chili that's for sure!
oh and btw -- it's wonderful with a dollop of the raw sour creme on the top with some chopped onions, and cilantro -- (plus it looks purdy) and on the side... try Alissa's rye bagels.. omg... what a yummilicious combination!
enjoy that pizza! You'll love that crust!
